New Walking Animations..

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 1:33 pm

...... i guess i could :meh:
i can see your point though, what if you dled it only to find it was like oshiel's animation replacer , but more ninja! :o

Heh, that's kinda why I want a video. I still wish I'd seen Oshiel's before downloading.

haha, the pose in it is what shocked me most, to see jiub standing next to me at the start, with his crotch propped towards me :hubbahubba:
yeh, i'm gonna go ahead and say it's nothing like oshiel's, but i will make a video to show people what it's like before they dl
however if i release for testing at some point, i probably won't make a video for that (or else i'd have to make a new one every time i fix something), only for when i release version 1.0

thanks for the link dragon32, i'm pretty new to modding so i'll have a look through it and see what i can find

Oshiel's animations are.... unique...

BTW, what do you have in mind for the sideways strafing animations?

hmmm.... i was gonna leave that one til last, because it is the toughest

i'd like your input and anyone elses, on what you think any of the walking animations should look like (except forward ones, i've already done those ^_^ ) , your comment suggests you know what you would want them to be like already, so please give your input

i was thinking, like a sideways walk (hard to explain, i don't mean a forward walk just turned sidewards but a sideways walk with feet still pointing forwardish), i might do a strafe when i get on to running, but i don't think a strafe matches walking

What do you guys think?

Do you mean the feet pointing forward but a foot crossing behind?

The best strafing (and I use that term loosely) I've seen in games is when they keep it simple. When the character strafes, he just walks/runs sideways in relation to the camera and turns his head in the direction the camera is looking. It looks very real and, in theory, blends elegantly with the forward and backward run/walk cycles.

yeh, but maybe not pointing fully forward, i might have give them i slight tilt towards the side
hehe, i'm really not good with words.....

and cire, i like the idea and i agree completely, in fact it's what i originally planned, but i'm not sure how attack animations would look while walking sidewards, it would probably look like you are attacking to the side while your head is pointed forwards, i could try it, but it will probably look weird

i got an idea for the idle animations (not the animations for yawning, stretching etc., but the animations for when the characters stand still,) how bout making the characters move slightly up and down to make them look less static (and by slightly, i mean very slightly)
i'm gonna replace idle animations so they fit the walks, so i should be able to do this while i'm changing the animations, but i thought i'd get your opinions on this first

Yeah, I don't know. I hate to be a pest, but it would be easier if we could see your walking anims. Right now it's kinda hard to get in the headspace.

Let me do some pondering on the idles. :D

haha, ok
i guess i'll do some tweaking and then get a video done, i was just hoping to get more done before making a video
i've done WalkForward; i'll show what i've got so far in the video, but editing some of the things i would like to has now become impossible unless i use a backup of it, which is at an earlier stage, due to the .max file becoming corrupt
i've also done WalkForward1h; and also i'll do Idle1h; to give an example of what it would be like

...animation does takes a while to do

I quite like the vanilla idles. It's the WalkForward I can't stand ;)

Hmm, I believe Max (or at least newer versions of it) has an incremental save feature. I started using it in Maya last year after having file corruption issues and haven't looked back.

You're right though, animation is time consuming. It takes patience, planning and it's also important to get lots of eyes on your work. That's one thing I learned the hard way back in school.

wow, a professional!

haha, i'm not sure what you'll think of my dodgy creations, i've only been learning/doing animation for about a week now :P
i'm uploading the vid to youtube right now, it's just taking a while, and please feel free to criticize (though none of the animations are really what i would call finished yet, though i doubt i ever will call them any of them finished) as i would like your input the most (not that you other guys don't matter either)

will post again when it's finished uploading

aaaah... youtube had error uploading..... i gotta start uploading all over again

I'm not a Professional Animator. I learned it in school, but animation isn't my discipline in the industry. :D

yeh, go for it!

just read the tutorials and you've pretty much get the jist of it
i'm gonna focus maintly on blending the animations smoothly, and it's going ok so far, you'll see in the video that i'm using the start phase of the first walking animation to blend it better, though there is a slight twitch because i haven't done the idle; animation yet, but once that is done it should be fine
there is a twitch when my character pulls his weapon out as well, but once i've got that animation done (which shouldn't take long) the 1 handed animation should blend in smoother as well
i've also got to sort a few things out with the 1 handed walking animation, but i can do that easily when i've got the curve sheet in 3ds max working properly :brokencomputer:

@cire: ah, i misunderstood your comment..... i thought you said you animate at work ..... but instead you were making a pun :slap: :nono:
though you seem to know what you talk about concerning animation

^ Does Max have a Dope Sheet by any chance (not a Curve Sheet, I'm pretty sure that's Max's version of the Graph Editor)?

it does, but i like using the curve sheet for editing a large amount of note positions at once, it's really useful in telling what makes those jerky movements in your animation, and how you should go about making it smoother.

here's the link to the vid, however it's really dark, sorry, youtube is weird like that -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-P_kT205QI

btw, notice the lack of crotch movement :D

also when my character is still, that's the slow idle movement (hard to see with the small screen), compare him to julan behind who is using a static idle animation, it's only a small effect but it's nice in game
oh and mireneye, the 1 handed walk used to be one of the mocaps from that site you linked to, it's been heavily edited but i kept the leg movements :D , and i think the quality of animation goes down in game(?) so it's not as nice as it looks in nifskope

I personally still fail to get anything to work in MW. What exporter settings do you use (Unless you are on something else then max) & which skeleton(biped) do you use of the avaliable ones to import animation onto and edit them?

Cheers for replacing animations dude!

i use the 3rd person body and export as a single kf with a nif, with nothing but export skin modifier, hidden nodes and obviously transforms ticked

that video is really quite rubbish <_<
