New way of map!...

Post » Sat Aug 20, 2011 6:58 pm

I was bit disappointing wen first time saw a map in Skyrim, it is good wen you can see a whole region around you and movements in map, bt in Oblivion it was just more medieval style especially wen you add map mod(makes Oblivion map tear apart), share your opinions...

I voted Oblivion paper map. Don't get me wrong, I like the 3D-map, it looks spectacular. But the paper-map looks more like a real map the character could have in his/her inventory.
The 3D-map pulls you out (literally) of your 'suspension of disbelief' and screams; LOOK, this is actually a 3D videogame you're playing!!!!

The Oblivion map also felt like a GPS system, due to the location pointer on it. If you want an authentic feel, you should prefer a map without your current location. I didn't feel the icons fitted the game and overall it just felt like a computer interface. Skyrims "map" is just another point of view, just as realistic as third person view.

If you want a good map system, check out Far Cry 2. You physically pulled out a folded up map from your pocket, unfolded it, and held it in your hands whilst looking at it. And while you did that, everything around you carried on, so you couldn't pull out the map in a middle of a gunfight. That system for Skyrim would be excellent.

the map pulls you out of your suspension of disbelief... but creating a character, being able to reload and go back in time before dying, and the loading screens, etc... dont do the same?

seriously, people... stop complaining so much, and be grateful for the work bethesda puts into the game.

besides, im sure PC gamers will change it through mods, somehow.

I think the best map for Skyrim will be which you can hold in hands and still time around you didn't freeze, than it was both realistic and didn't pull you out of real time action!!!...

I don't mind the new map as we will have our own paper map with the game, that we can use instead if we want and if we prefer the in game map we can use that.

That true most realistic way you can get, hold on your own hands a Skyrim map... :read:

I prefer the oblivion style map just because it seems easier to navigate since no mountains and stuff are going to block you view or anything and I would say it's easier to find what areas your looking for on a flat map than trying to memorize terrain patterns to find that mine you just left to go heal or something and most importantly it served it's function just fine only could've used a zoom function and then it would be perfect. New one sure looks nice but the whole 3d thing was completely unnecessary, not that I hate or anything I'm sure it will still work fine but they went out of their way to give us something nobody asked for.

I prefer Oblivion's map because it suits the setting more, and because it's far less revealing. The 3D map almost looks too good at what it does.

In the real world, detail is good. I like to know where everything is and exactly where I'm going. In an open-world fantasy game I like to explore and discover things for myself. I enjoy that feeling of being lost at times in an unfamiliar world - not knowing what's around the corner. I enjoy learning certain routes for myself, learning where all the major landmarks are, etc. The map should just be there for orientation purposes so I can work out roughly wear I am in relation to where I need to be. Nothing more.

Precisely. I don't understand how something in the paused menus could possibly interfere with Mah immurshunz. If it simply has to be a paper map for the realism, then imo it should also be in the game world like Far Cry 2. If it is in the menu with the game paused, then, again just my opinion, the prettier the better.

If you are hard core RPG gamer, best way is not to easy navigate, bt experience exploration and get lost (what The elder scrolls series is all about).

I actually prefer the Skyrim-map, because it contains height-information, which is important in such a mountainous region as Skyrim. What I'd like to see though is more "fog of war", so I don't see everything from the beginning and have do discover the landscape first.

Never really thought about it affecting exploration or anything but yeah I think it could kind of spoil it a bit know the exact layout of everything around you. It would be nice to get a mod that adds a scroll with a traditional map to navigate with and we probably will.

That's almost certainly why they did it now that I think about it. Since we'll be navigating around gigantic mountains height data makes it alot easier to get around as I'm sure lots of people would have been irritated by having to actually find their way around to their destination on their own.

I'm not convinced fog of war will be sufficient enough to prevent the map from being too revealing. The fog will probably be lifted within a certain radius around the player, so you'll only need to walk in a straight line to reveal a much wider section of the map. It's really not going to take much walking around at all to uncover the whole thing.

In a good open-world game, you can visit a certain area of the map many times, and still discover new things you may have missed before, like the entrance to a hidden dungeon, etc. In fact, the very first time you start wandering through the world, into different areas, you probably won't be taking in much detail at all. So it would be kind've a shame to have everything revealed on the map just from these first visits. That hidden dungeon entrance you could've stumbled upon after 200 hours of gameplay will probably be marked clearly on your map after 5 hours of gameplay, just because you stepped within a certain radius of it.

You're too cool for this forum. Get out.

Well just preorder the game and get the cloth one... or not preorder it and get the paper one. I won't be using the Skyrim Satellite map EVER.

I'm sure I remember seeing very cloudy areas in the map in the leaked demo, can't check because the video won't load but I think there will be some system. I seriously doubt you will start out knowing all locations.

You know, if you want a real map, like super real... why don't you use the cloth map that comes with the game? I mean if you can keep general track of where you are and keep that handy, it would be like you really have a map! cause... you... really have a damn map. Personally I like Skyrims, Oblivions wasn't anything to special and neither of them change exploration at all. Locations pop up once you've been there, and you still have to go off the beaten path to find stuff. Skyrim isn't magically going to change that, and it looks real slick how they've handle it so... yeah. It's something new and interesting. And if I want a 'real' map, I'll have 2, the glosspaper all the games come with and the cloth one we get for pre-ordering.

Agree with using the cloth map.
I don't like the 3d one, when I saw the map it reminded me of Sid Meiers: Civilization Revolution game and that just p*ssed me off.
It might look better when I play it though but I doubt it.

I agree, what is up with these people lately. I loved the way the map looked and items on the map do not show up until we actually visit them. I believe most of these people will only be happy when TES VI comes out with only paper and a pen and no game...I'm glad Bethesda doesn't listen to most of the geeks on this forum.
