New Weapon: Flails

You will never, ever see a flail in Skyrim. Not even as a mod. I let you have a wild guess of why is that.

I don't think you have any facts, just conjecture.

I've secretly wished for flails in Elder Scrolls for a long time.

Why?

Because they are next to impossible to animate properly in a game that has something even distantly resembling physics. That's why you very rarely see them. If you do, their animations are half-assed (but in that case, i would name the weapon "fail"). In Skyrim, you also have all the ending moves which you would have to suit for the weapon, even though i'd consider those the least of the problems when modding the weapon.

I guess i can see how the physics of a flail might be hard to do, but it isn't impossible, and this is always a weapon i wanted in TES

daggerfall and arena had them, but they didn't have to move realistically back then. those mods for morrowind and oblivion both looked really bad IMO.

Thanks forgot about Arena,

Well there is certain limitation for modders for creating realistically working flails, but from other side in what game flails was done good?
What implementation can be used for inspiration?

the question was "do you WANT flails to be in skyrim", not "do you think there will be flails in skyrim?".

I know. I want them, but since the cost is so high I have to vote I don't want them.

More weapon options is always good, I'd like to see them in game. If not Skyrim then the next TES game.

Daggerfall had flails! I believe that if the dev's wanted to they could easily make the physics and animations work just fine, but I doubt it is gonna happen.

I like flails, if they ever appear I hope we can hold the button to keep the ball spinning over our head for a type of power attack.

Flails should have a bonecrushing stationary power attack.

Yep, i saw some videos and they really look weird :)

I suppose the close we can get to a flail will be a http://www.mostinterestingfacts.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/3.Morning-star.jpg, no so physics dependent. But it's basically a mace so we already got em in ;)

We don't really know how the physics will work in skyrim, tho. Afaik the engine is new. Finishing moves for a flail are not gonna be any different from the other weapons if it ignores the physics [it's more or less a scripted cut-scene], they can even script the jiggling and make it entirely physics free... but in the end it's gonna act like a "high-tech" mace of sorts.

The more weapons there are the more roles I can play! Flails, nun-chucks, throwing knives, whips, spears, bow-staff, crossbows, shuriken, the list could go on and on! By the way, flails aren't anything new. I believe they've made an appearance in Arena or Daggerfall.

Would I like to have them? Yeah, sure, they're my favorite type of weapon. But it's just not realistic. It would take a ton of effort to animate them correctly and all that and I just cannot imagine flails ever working in a game like this. The Morrowind and Oblivion flail mods posted proved that, I think. Nice for mods, not nice if those were actually in the game.

there was a great picture in the fighting fantasy book Deathtrap Dungeon of an orc swinging a flail that made a big impression on me as a kid, i've just done a search for it online but had no luck, so yeah, i've always had a thing for flails, but they never seem to get implemented well in games at all, and the physics seem so demanding that you'd almost have to base a whole game around it (Viking 2: Pillage of the Drunken Flailer), which, obviously, i would play.

Yes there hasn't been any realistic modern games that have flails, especially in the first person, so it would be tough with no inspiration. However, i think that bethesda developers are trailblazers and they COULD do it, and would be really cool to have, but i don't know exactly how hard it would be.
