New Zealand Earthquake

Post » Sat Aug 21, 2010 10:12 pm

Hi guys, there was a huge earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand just a few hours ago. It's the second one to hit them in 6 months, and the situation is looking pretty grim.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/4688231/65-dead-in-devastating-Christchurch-quake

I just thought I'd let people know and try to find out if anyone we know was down there. raistlinmajere8 PM'd me earlier asking if I was ok. The earthquake didn't hit us in Wellington very hard, so we're fine but I know CoolShady and some others are from Christchurch so let's hope they're ok.

Here's another http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/23/world/asia/23zealand.html?_r=1&src=http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1168398-new-zealand-earthquake/twrhp on it. It makes me sadder and sadder knowing that my favorite city in New Zealand that I never got to visit is being hit worse and worse by this earthquake.

Heard this on the radio just now. It sounds terrible, my thoughts are with all of those affected. :(

I wasn't aware Wellington was affected, how bad is the damage?

Wellington, despite being on a huge faultline, as largely unaffected. And by largely, I mean completely.

I know a few more people are from Christchurch/Lyttleton and that surrounding area. I hope they're all doing well.

65 dead at the moment. I sent CoolShady a message, but I doubt they'll have internet in ChCh for a while yet. Scary stuff, my flatmate lives down there but thankfully he's been up North since Uni starts next week, and my best friend's dad just came back from ChCh the other day, he was meant to go back down Thursday, he'd been helping assess building damage from the last quake. Hopefully people start leaving, the quakes haven't stopped for 6 months straight and just seems to be getting worse.

My thoughts go out to everyone affected.

Hopefully everyone from the forums that live in the area get a chance to post and let us know they're ok.

I know only CoolShady and Ni!, but I am unsure of whether Ni is from Christcurch. This is really sad to see. My condolences to all the New Zealanders present at the time of the earthquake.

Best of wishes to all those affected.

What's happening to the earth? Though nowhere near the magnitude of the earthquake in NZ, http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsww/Quakes/usb0001iiy.php here in the Philippines 6 hours ago as well.

Ni!'s not from Christchurch, and I'm hoping Coolshady's okay. I've been watching the news all afternoon. It's heartbreaking. My Aunty down there is fine, but we're not sure about our cousin.

Just heard on the news that people reckon that the death toll could be between 200 and 400 :( Ever since the earthquake in September they've been having loads of aftershocks, about 3000 at least I think, so it's likely that they'll have more. I just can't begin imagine what it's like down there.

EDIT: Hopefully the estimate of deaths is just the media exaggerating :(

My street is like a river. Earthquake lifted up parts of the drive. Everythings mega crazy schools closed for at least a week. Only just got power back still no water. Sinking sand everywhere.
Crazy....

Also was thinking of Solid_moose. I'm sure he's a NZ'der, but haven't seen him around for at least a couple of weeks.

I just checked his profile, and he's from Wellington so he's probably OK and it looks like he was in the Skyrim forum posting yesterday.

Hang in there Ragnalin. I just saw your post.

That, in the very least is some reassurance. But you know what's really sad? Those lives taken...65 families have to live with that. To make things worse, an old friend is living there, and I hope he is fine. All my heart and prayer goes out the Christchurch.

Heard about this on the news first thing this morning...oof. I sincerely hope everyone is okay, and safe. :( It may be a few days before we hear from any forum goers still MIA, though--the article I read said the city was being evacuated. Let's just hope the Earth's worked all this out of her system for now.

Its just really horrible, I'm almost tearing up watching it on the news. The death toll has been lowered to 38, however. But, overnight, there has been 30 aftershocks. Poor people down there. Makes me thankful that I live in the North Island.

Another sign that the world is ending in 2012. These natural disasters should be happening a lot more frequently soon.
