Newbee modder questions

Post » Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:01 pm

Today I finally received MW GotY for the PC so I can finally start with modding. :twirl:
I have several questions however. The first one being the most important;

1. Can I DL a mod on a different pc that hasn't got the actual game installed? Can I for example store the desired mod on a Memory stick and then apply it to the game on a different PC? I know this sounds strange but I have a very good reason for this. The laptop on which I will be playing the game on is not connected to the internet and never will because I intend to keep it clean. It's the laptop I have some VERY important software (engine management tuning software) running that can not be allowed to be corrupted. Will this even work? It's a temporary measure because I intend to buy a powerful PC in the near future but I sooooo can't wait to finally play the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions with my current character.

2. Would it be possible setting the attributes of my current character, the completed quests, inventory and other possessions from my (extremely glitchy) XBOX game to a new game on the laptop so I can effectively continue the exact same character on the laptop in a modded game?

3. Is there a companion mod you guys can recommend? I am looking for a useful mage-companion. I'll have a look-see on TES nexus tonight for other mods. Most will aesthetic I think because the game is pretty damn good and doesn't really needs much changing. Maybe something to make Morrowind feel (even) more alive. Passive wildlife would be nice.

1. You can put your mod on memory stick and copy it to Morrowind data files on another PC, yes.

2. No, at least not legally.

3. I'm not into companion, and even less about mage one, but you can try to find something fitting http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?category_show_all=0&view=mods.List

I thought you could use the CS to place items in your character's inventory and setstages for quests?

You can, but you'll need to use the console to set your character's attributes. The UESP wiki pages has the commands. I'd provide a link but I don't have it on this computer.

That's a lot of work. A LOT OF WORK. If you've made it so far in the game, you're going to be setting a tedious amount of journal entries, console-killing enemies, adding items, setting levels, setting factions.. It's possible, yes, but extremely tedious.

Also, Julan is a popular companion. I'm not into companions either, but the thread should be active somewhere within the first 5 or so pages.

Yes, it's relatively easy to achieve the same attributes and possessions via the console, but filling your journal to the same point would be more work than I would want to do, at least if you have finished a lot of quests. Really, just start again and enjoy all of the amazing graphical improvements over the XBox.

http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2490 is one of my favorites. There is also http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=815, and http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=mods.List, and http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=7749. If you're running a good rig you can load MCA, Starfire's NPC's, and CM Partners all at the same time. Balmora actually looks crowded with all of them running at once! :)

Oh, I will start over with a new character but I am writing a fan-fic about my Dunmer character so that's why I was trying to find a short-cut to continue him on the PC. Journal entries aren't really that important since most of the quests he started are already done. Temple, House Redoran, Mainquest and Imperial legion are done.
He hasn't killed any important NPC's because he's a good guy.

What's considered a good rig? For now I will have to do with a laptop, don't know the exact specs but it's runing Windows XP so not too bad actually.

Thanks for the answers!

Depends a lot, do you plan to use MGE or clean Morrowind with mods only? Most "normal" mods should be fine as long as you can run Morrowind, some high end models, like fancy weapons that have reflection, or high resolution texture replacers could slow you down, but non of it should cause too big fps impact.

MGE could also be used, you could even speed the game up, but some functions of MGE require much stronger PCs to run them.

An useful mage companion? http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=6969 fits the description.
And just in case, here is a link to http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=907946 Trunksbomb mentionned.
Something to make Vvardenfell feel more alive? http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1067864&hl= has a few suggestions.

But wait, you said you're new to Morrowind mods? Then http://www.mwmythicmods.com/Gluby/Gluby_Main.htm is the place you want to go.

Well if you can get your save off of your xbox I can make it work for the PC if you want.

It's not a companion mod as such, but Uvirith's Legacy makes at least two useful companions available to a Telvanni player. One is an apprentice named Gavyn, whom you can train and assign chores. The other is a Dremora named Ash-Kosh, a very powerful fighter who resurrects after being killed. You can only get him/her (you can choose its gender) after becoming Archmagister. There are one or two other companions available from this mod, but I haven't encountered them yet and don't know much about them.
