Next Elder Scrolls will be on new system

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 9:19 am

We could have had Tes 5 way sooner if they didn't involve in the Fallout where they didn't belong. I know my opinion won't be praised here, but that's not my purpose: I stick to my belief that The Elder Scrolls series and Fallout series should be developed by different teams with different executive producers, provided Bethesda is big enough to afford the expenses. It's a win-win situation for both franchises. Better games, faster production, no more hilarious similarities (aka the mushrooms in Oblivion migrating to the Fallout wasteland).

Except for the minor detail that Gamebryo's potential has not at all been maxed out, nor has the hardware for the current systems. Gamebryo is game engine software, and software always has room for optimization. Object culling, decent LOD texture transitions, FPS hit from NPCs on screen, etc, etc. If there were no more room for software optimization, then there would be no more versions of Gamebryo. And rest assured that Emergent certainly hasn't been sitting around doing nothing for the past 1 to 3 years. The version of Gamebryo that Bethesda is likely using right now as part of their in-house development title is almost guaranteed to be a higher and more optimized version than what was used in Fallout 3. And, hardware and memory optimization, writing more efficient shaders, etc, etc, means that your hardware doesn't have to be the latest and greatest to do great things with it. Current-gen hardware, therefore, is hardly maxed out.

It's true that it would be possible to fit some more detail to current generation graphics. But I never saw Bethesda as ones liking to be bound by anything, hardware or other. If they feel they need to put something in the game that X360 or PS3 won't handle, they will and they will worry later what to do about it. Besides look at previous TES and see how much they differ. I expect something groundbraking from TESV, also in the terms of graphics and I don't see it happening if they have to constantly look back on the current consoles and think about optimizing every single thing. Gamebryo will evolve beyond their capabilities as well as the capabilities of current PC hardware at some point, wether we want it or not...

The next ES game will likely come out for the current generation of consoles because Bethesda is really good at working with this engine and the next generation of consoles won't be out for at least 3 years.

I suspect the ES: SKYRIM will come out in the fall of 2010 with the next one no earlier than late 2013.

People, It is Fall of 2009 with not a single word of ESV. Just Speculation. I find it hard to believe that Fall of 2010 would be a release date. E3 will expose the next "BIG PROJECT" and the marketing will amp up at that time, probably a 2011 release date. Just my 2cents.

i tend to keep up with console releases so whatever format it comes out on i'll get it, i use my PC for business so i doubt i'll get it on that...

lets just go with the numbers Oblivion sold more on Xbox360 than any other format, DLC sold more on Xbox360

i bet Todd Howard's inbox is full to the brim already, imagine if he confirmed development of TESV

Oblivion took 2-3 years, i would imagine we'll see it on all current formats winter 2010/2011, but nothing official until summer 2010, june 15th at a guess ;)

my hopes are more about content, gameplay etc etc rather than what format it comes out on

dont get me started on the failure that the PS3 is, believe me i know

Aww, so much for an equal trade. :( Oh well, at least the cookie made someone happy.

I make no promises! :P Though we can probably convince Princess Stomper to go rifle through Todd's trash, thus sparing you the discomfort; win-win for almost everyone involved!

One thing that people seem to be forgetting in this discussion is the current economic situation. My predicition is that there won't be a next generation of consoles for a loooong time. People are having problems keeping their houses and paying electricity. Let alone come up with the money to buy a new console every 4 years. If or when there is a new XBOX developed, it will be so far in the future that Bethesda won't want to lose the income that a new Elder Scrolls would generate to wait on it. So I'm pretty sure the next installment of TES will be on PS3 and 360 as well as PC.

Have people forgotten the announcement that they're looking for a 2010 release? That, of course, does not necessarily mean that it will be released Fall/Holiday 2010. It could be delayed to 2011, but my guess is that it will be released around that time.

Besides, which console gets JRPG's?

The Nintendo DS.

As it stands the current gen of consoles are due to come to an end in 2012.

As is the world, from what I hear. :obliviongate:

'A while' could mean anything from a month to a hundred years. We shouldn't use that for a basis.

I've got a theory. Let's look at the numbers, shall we? Morrowind was released on May 1st, 2002. Four years later, on march 20th 2006, Oblivion was released. Two and a half years after that Fallout 3 was released. The time between Oblivion and FO3 is only two years (as opposed to Morrowind-Oblivion's four years) because they had a seperate team working on FO3 as soon as they aqcuired the rights. Whereas before, when gamesas ws a much smaller company, everyone worked on one game at a time. Now that they've expended they can have at least one small portion of the team working on a seperate game while another game is polished up. In this case, while Oblivion was being developed, FO3 was at least being conceptualized. And while Morrowind was being finished, a small team was planning out Oblivion. I believe they've said this in interviews. So a conclusion can be reached that they are working on TESV at this very moment (obviously), and have been ever since FO3 was in developement.

Now, with my marketing experience, and studying gamesas's buisiness model, this is what I predict.
The first TES novel will be released this November. Perhaps TESV will be officially announced along side it, thus bringing attention to the book and at the same time generating hype for the fifth game. Maybe we'll also get a single screenshot too just to wet our apetites, kind of like what they did with Oblivion's announcement with the screenshot of the guy in steel armor on a horse looking out at some poorly rendered mountains. Whew.
Then we don't here anything from bethesda for months. Maybe they do some interviews, but they're tight-lipped about game features and what have you. E3 2010 rolls around and thats when they finally showcase their workable demo to the massess. We see how awesome it is. From there, they slowly release more screenshots, videos, and game mechanics up until a 2011 Q2 game release. They build us up, creating more hype like all developers do.

That's three years development between Fallout and TESV, more than enough time to make a good game, especialy if we take in the idea that concepts for TESV have probably been around ever since Oblivion was released, and that a small team was devoted to figuring out the basics. Now that Fallout3 has been out for a year, it's likely the entire team is working full-time on the next TES game. If they wait too long (someone a few posts back mentioned four years from now was likely), then people loose interest and the fanbase dissipates. Too soon and the game comes out sloppy. You have to aim for that sweet spot in the middle.

Remember Q2 2011. You saw it here first.

I'm going to keep on spouting this post untill TESV is released, just to show you all how right I am.
Confirmation: November-December, after the novel is released
Demo: E3 2010
Release: 2011 Q2

Announcing a new title too soon would stir up competition. That's why we've heard nothing. It's pretty simple.
