Next Games DLC

Post » Fri Aug 06, 2010 8:50 am

Remember when DLC was called an Expansion Pack? Yeah well it's the same thing so no complaining because the word describing it changed.

Anyway, what sort of game DLC do you like? Did you like Bethesda's DLC, some other games? If you hate DLC what kind would actually make you interested? Vote in the poll!

Personally, since Morrowind was described as the "singleplayer MMO" I'd like to see Bethesda try to bring at least one MMO style expansion to the game. As in not only adding new quests and places to explore, but changing around the world we already had and the way it works. Imagine if there was DLC for Oblivion that added changing season and holidays! Weather patterns would change, leaves turning brown, falling off, regrowing, etc. Elderscrolls games are already highly replayable, adding new features to the game world can only make it even more so, while adding specific quests and etc. might only be good for a single playthrough.

Anyway, over to you guys

DLC and Expansion packs are so not the same thing. That said, I can only hope that TES V (assuming there is a TES V, of course) will steer away from 'DLC' and back towards the 'expansion pack.'

pfft, tchyah, of coure they are not the same...
...sorry.

I am more for extra world content added, and some balance tweaks. I don't want to have to play a different game with my characters. And on a timeline scale it feels weird to tack new stuff on in world, unless the game world was really big enough to not notice its existence before. Like KOTN existed in a weird secluded area that I had really never visited before, that was a good addition. If they added the KOTN quests to regular temples, it would be weird for older characters, like they weren't important enough until they hit lv26 to be contacted by whatever diety.

So for the most part, I'd go with Bloodmoon/Shivering Isles style that borrowed lightly from the others.

Where is the "all of the above" option? :D

I've developed a bit of distaste for the traditional expansion pack. I would much rather consume smaller bits of content sooner than waiting a year+ for an expansion.

I actually really liked Rockstar's approach with Grand Theft Auto IV. They built this huge detailed world in the main game, and then with the DLC they told new stories, introduced new characters, fleshed out old characters a bit more, and utilized some of the lesser used areas of the world.

I also liked Fallout 3's a la carte style of additional content.

I vote for Fallout 3 I guess.

No for DLC, yes for big expansions.

And yes for patches, which Bethesda seems to have forgotten about completely!

Just make the core game good enough, and you can unleash an expansion 1-2 times a year. New areas preferrably, to prevent mod incompatibility (spellign?) :D

This. All the DLCs for Oblivion were just little mods. In fact, some of the user-made mods are infinitely better in quality and content than the official DLC.

Bethesda has professional game developers. Go make something I can't get off of TESNexus! In other words, a full-blown expansion, like Bloodmoon and Tribunal and Shivering Isles.

You should have made a multiple choice one, I want both "It added a huge new area to explore and do stuff in (Shivering Isles/Bloodmoon/Etc.)" & "There were new quests in new areas (Fallout 3 style)" cause honestly the only DLC worth getting for OB was Shivering Isles & mabye Mehrunes Razor, I don't want just a new house tjhat I can do absolutely nothing in. If they added a huge expansion (or 2 like they did with Morrowind) and more quests DLC like they did with FO3 ill be happy.

Frankly, I thought most of FO3's expansions played to the game's weakness: combat. Only Point Lookout had more exploration. However, none of them had much of a story to them. It was just an explanation for killing more people. I'd much rather have a shivering isles than a knights of the nine.

I liked Shivering Isles. An entirely new diverse world to explore. Can't go far wrong with that

Expansions would keep more people interested in the world if there was a new area to explore. Just an idea. :goodjob:

That should have been in the main game, though. :unsure2:

But yeah, I want to see expansion packs, and NOT DLC. I don't want to put armour on my either easily replacable, or immortal horse. All horse armour ever done for me was loose shadowmere when I tried to get the armour off...

Landmasses are the way to go. Leave the house mods to the modders.

I think bloodmoon and shivering isles type expansions are the best way to go.

Definitely this. I shouldn't have to pay for something that a modder can make and offer for free.

I agree fully, expansion packs are large addons to the game that add a considerable amount of content and may also introduce new gameplay mechanics, they are also distributed in the same fashion as the full game (For example, you can buy expansion packs in stores.) DLC is a cheap attempt to milk a game for more money by selling players small plugins that are often no better than free, player made mods, they're also usually overpriced, also, as their name implies, they are downloaded. Maybe if the downloadable content is decent, I might consider getting a combined package of it in stores if such a thing is made, but otherwise, I can do without. Other than that, back before the obsession with downloadable content, you'd never see them market something that lets you put armor on your easily replaceable horse as an expansion, because no one would want to buy such a thing for the same price as they'd pay for an entirely new landmass, complete with dungeons, quests, and lots of new loot and enemies.

What I want Bethesda to focus on is proper expansions, like Tribunal and Bloodmoon for Morrowind, or Shivering Isles for Oblivion.

Then don't.

If Bethesda's resources are focused on downloadable content, that may mean that we won't get proper expansions, look at Oblivion, Morrowind had two expansions, whereas Oblivion only had one, and Fallout 3 had none (Okay, Point Lookout has some elements of an expansion since it adds an entirely new area you can explore freely, complete with both a main quest and side quests, but I don't think it really had enough content to qualify as a new expansion.)

Given the size of the console market theres no way Bethesda will just leave it to the modders (and why should they? They are a business after all and console users are part of their market).
Theres also no reason given that Bethesda is now a bigger company than it was in MW days that producing small DLC should stand in the way of producing proper expansions as well assuming they are profitable enough.

edit: And if they aren't profitable enough they won't get made regardless of whether other DLC get made or not.

Can I have it all? lol. I don't mind DLC, as long as it doesn't replace expansion packs. Frankly, given the longevity of each TES game, I don't know why Bethesda doesn't have a small team working on DLC (and maybe expansion packs) for a game until they release the next one. I know I'd gladly shell out for DLC and an annual hefty expansion for Oblivion (and would have done the same for Morrowind).

If I have to choose between expansions and DLC, I'd rather have expansions.

That is, of course, true, Bethesda wants to milk the console market for all it's worth, and I suppose console players are more likely to get the DLC than those playing the PC versions of the game since they can't download free mods.

I want the next Elder Scrolls to be more like Morrowind. That being said I think I'd prefer DLC, so long as it actually gives you something worth downloading. The horse armor in Oblivion was just horrid, but a few of the hideouts weren't too bad. Utilizing the expansion packs for huge new places to explore would be great too though. The Bloodmoon expansion was easily one of the best ones I've ever played.
