They are lucky they have stayed in it this long and they are lucky that St. Louis and Seattle lost today. The whole team really needs to pick it up. It obviously isn't something that's going to be happening this year or perhaps even the next. At this point it's not the skill of the players that's holding us back it's the experience that they have.
Experience so that when they make plays those plays stay as forward momentum and not come back because of a penalty. Most of the season felt like taking one step forward and two steps back. Alex Smith may have had his problems but how many times did he make plays only to have to come back because someone on the offensive line was penalized? I've seen it happen a quite a few times and every time I seen a penalty flag go down I thought to myself "what niner screwed up this time?".
Continuity is important as switching around players, coaches, and offensive coordinators can definitely have a negative effect on play calling. Knowing your coaches, knowing your team members, and knowing your skills is extremely important. Conservative play calling throughout the season has killed us. The riskier plays are not that risky when you have experienced players executing them.
