[RELz] nGCD v2.0

I haven't seen anyone else post about this and I don't think I had this problem with nGCD RC6 but I had the issue that some others have had where the level up icon was shown onscreen so I slept a several times and went up a bunch of levels in succession without any change in skills (only the level number increased) I then read the post by Brax09876 stating that he had had this same issue and fixed it by turning on the option in the .ini file that allows level to decrease. I turned this option on as well and it did indeed stop the level up prompt from showing it does indeed do what it says it does though. When I equip my characters Dark Brotherhood armor all of those skill bonuses cause my character's level to go up like three levels I think it is. Then of course when I unequip the DB armor her level goes back down. I would assume that other items that grant several skill bonuses would cause this to happen as well I just don't have any other items that give as many bonuses to skills as the DB armor does. I ran nGCD RC6 before this version but it was not on the same install of the game, I uninstalled and re-installed the game and then when I went to add nGCD to my new install I saw there was a new version and so downloaded that and used it. I have been thinking about downgrading back to RC6 is would I still need to run the nGCD clean before going back to the old version? Note: I do run Supreme Magicka and OOO as well but I have made all the changes to SMs .ini file that I have seen on these forums that are recommended when running nGCD along with it and from what I have read OOO should not conflict with leveling mods. Anyway thanks for any assistance or advice that can be given on this issue.

RC6 behaves like 2.0 with the level-decrease enabled. If you look at the first post in this thread, you'll see that I recommend making that change to the defaults, as well as changing LevelFactor in nGCDCalc.ini.

I'm concerned that you're seeing that effect with the Dark Brotherhood armor, though. Normal enchantments shouldn't affect your attributes or level, only special script-added ones like the Skeleton Key. Are you using a mod which changes that armor?

Okay just an update... I have cleaned version 2.02 from my saves and have reinstalled RC6 and thus far after a few hours of play RC 6 seems to be working wonderfully, I have changed nothing in its .ini file I am just using it fresh "out of the box". With RC6 the level up prompt never appears and my level seems stable regardless of whether I have DB armor on or not. My level was at 17 with DB armor when I first reinstalled RC6, RC6 has since adjusted it back down to 14 which is about where it would be under 2.02 without DB armor equipped. My skills all seem to be increasing as they should be and the progress bar toward next level is advancing gradually as it should be as well. I have not actually went up a level under RC6 just yet but the indicators are looking like that should be working as it should be as well.

To my knowledge I am not running a mod which changes that armor except cosmetically, so it fits the HGEC female body better but that wouldn't have any effect on how things are counted. OOO makes a lot of changes but I don't really have a catalog of what changes it makes and it would prolly give me a headache to read through it if I did. :) I do run COBL I know that affects a lot of things "under the hood" so to speak. Supreme Magicka, Midas Magic, Reneers Guard Overhaul these are the ones that make the most sweeping broad changes, I run several others but they mostly do much smaller things like adding a shop here or there or adding some armor or something like that, Deadly Reflex... I run that too but I don't think that does anything to the DB armor or any other item. Anyway the version of the DB armor that I have has it Fortifying Sneak, Illusion, Marksman, Blade and Acrobatics 8 points each and then 2 more points to each of those with the hood. Actually though as I thought about it it sounded kind of logical, In vanilla Oblivion you would go up two or three levels before you would get that many skill increases without enchantment. I mean crap that's a total of 10 extra points to each of those skills. It seems that nGCD is calculating what the characters "effective level" would be with skills actually at those levels but is for some reason applying that as actual level. I figured that kind of thing is what the setting in the .ini file to allow or not allow level to decrease is meant to prevent. Thing is when I used RC6 I didn't get the level up icon at all and there was never any reason to change anything in the .ini file and level never decreased or increased when it wasn't supposed to. I am not good at scripting just yet but I have played role playing games for a number of years both tabletop and computer and this whole thing just smacks of something applying bonuses to something that they are not supposed to be applied to. There would have to be something somewhere that is applying normal enchantment bonuses to whatever it is that calculates the characters actual level, with Oblivion being a skill based system it would be an easy error to make. I am sorry I have gone to rambling... thinking out loud mostly if there is such a thing on a forum where everything is typed.

Hey Tejon - Quick question. i'm deathly afraid to turn off ngcd in order to see if it is the cause of modpca in the console not to function. Or am I just doing something wrong? I'm trying to fire a small increase of willpower to my character, but modav and modpca is giving me no love...

Any ideas?

nGCD takes complete control of the base values for your eight main attributes, plus Health and Magicka unless you turn those off in nGCD.ini. This is a necessity of implementation (Realistic Leveling will do the same) and anyway, shame on you for cheating! ;)

If you really need that bonus there are a few ways to get it, though none of them are quite as easy. PM me for details if you'd like.

It seems I encountered a bug while in Frostcrag Tower using Frostcrag Reborn. The problem was that in a special "student quarter" there are three magical Ayleid statues that temporarily increase the mage skills, the mana, and intelligence and willpower. The problem is that this temporary buff, increases permanently my character lvl from 1 to 11 the first time I tested it (I started a new game with nGCD version 2) and to level 9 the second time. This didn't happen in the previous nGCD version.

Also it somehow resets the bonuses got from RBP. Also I can see the level up symbol, but I don't see any option to level up and know that it shouldn't be there (at least in the previous nGCD version I used it wasn't there)

Do you know what might be wrong and how can I fix it?

The problem is that this temporary buff, increases permanently my character lvl from 1 to 11 the first time I tested it (I started a new game with nGCD version 2) and to level 9 the second time.

See the first post in this thread for a couple of recommended changes to the default configuration. One of them fixes this.

Great mod! I've been using nGCD with my current character and the previous versions with several other characters.

Just encountered a strange problem today. I'm getting the level-up symbol and level up screen when sleeping.

My character started with the new version of nGCD (no changes in version, then nGCD was active at the start of the character). Worked fine, though I missed the recommended changes at the start of this thread. I'll make those today. Last night I was battling Conjurers and automatically went from level 20 to 21 just fine, smooth, no sleeping just as always.

This morning I loaded up the last save from last night and got the level up symbol right after loaded (maybe a 1 second delay). Never saw that before with nGCD. I don't think it was there when I made the save last night. I save frequently and it is on the last 3 saves but not the previous ones.

nGCD is definitely active. I used BOSS for the load order. No changes, except I just loaded a simple denock arrow mod this morning, but then deactivated it with same results, so I don't think that's related. I re-installed nGCD, same problem. It's definitely active (checked). When I loaded the last save that did not have the level-up symbol I went and got a bunch of Armorer training (a major) to see what would happen. nGCD seemed to smoothly level up Endurance and Strength. Character level did not change from 20 even though the level progression bar cycled, though I suspect that's not applicable with nGCD.

Any recommendations? Could it be a corrupted few saves? Should I just go back to the last save without the symbol and try.

Note that the problem seems to have occurred after a particularly large battle with maybe 6 or more conjurers and their summons so maybe something got confused. But I don't remember seeing the symbol last night.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks again for the mod.

Should the training sessions / number of skill-ups to level in Progress not be touched at all with the new nGCD version? I noticed in a new Oblivion game (where I did touch both settings, putting the former at 9999 and the latter at 5) that suddenly my level had jumped from 1 to, I think, 2^15 after hitting 5 skill-ups. I raised it back to 10 and reloaded from an earlier save, and my level is back at 1 -- it'll be a while before I hit 10 level-ups to test to see if the behavior is still there.

I made the recommended changes in the first post, though I'm an idiot and can't remember if that behavior was occurring after the changes were made or not.

I've never lost skill points so that config change shouldn't matter.

I'm not clear on what "nGCD.fLevelFactor from 1.0 to 0.75." will do. Will that affect my getting a level up symbol vs smooth leveling.

Any idea what could have caused that problem? Thanks.

EDIT: I did make the two changes, it adjusted my level from 21 to 15 and no level up symbol. I still don't understand what was causing the problem or why the changes fixed it. But it appears to be fixed, for the moment at least.

It's a crazy interaction between the vanilla level-up code, and the code I added to nGCD 2.0 to address level fluctuation. I really shouldn't have made the new behavior default in the first place -- personally, I'd disable it even if there were no technical issues -- but it turned out to have unanticipated side effects. Fact is, I'm not 100% sure what the problem is, but I know what fixes it for now. :)

The level factor adjustment is what lowered your level to 15. The vast majority of people were finding nGCD 2.0's level calculation to be too punishing -- higher level means harder enemies, and the PC's stats just weren't keeping up.

Aha, I found the player.advskill command, so I can verify that after re-setting the mentioned progress.ini settings, nGCD appears to not be wildly setting my level to strange values.

Your mod (nGCD and Progress) seem to be working as intended. No messages, just smooth progress. Except, I'm leveling up faster than I want to. I've read through the pages before this and I "think" I know how to slow my leveling down, but just want to validate.

What happened - was level 3 when exiting the sewers for the first time. I think, for me, that was way too fast. I left your mods at default settings (using nGCD 2.x and whatever the latest Progress version is).

To change to slower leveling I should do the following?
nGCD current - set nGCD.fLevelFactor to 1.0
change to - set nGCD.fLevelFactor to 0.75

Progress current - set Progress.fSkillUseFactor to 0.7280
No change required - Supposedly that is 3x slower than vanilla. I don't see why it would need to be changed

So, to summarize, all I need to change is the nGCD.fLevelFactor setting (change to 0.75) in order to slow my overall leveling down. Correct? Or, do I in fact have to instead/also lower my fSkillUseFactor even slower than it currently is set? Say, to set Progress.fSkillUseFactor to 0.8819?

nGCD.fLevelFactor determines how high your level is, relative to your skills. Raising it increases your level without changing any of your other attributes, which makes the game harder because you'll meet tougher enemies with a weaker character.

Progress.fSkillUseFactor sets how fast your skills increase, with lower numbers giving quicker advancement. This speeds or slows the pace of advancement, but keeps the same balance against enemies.

I like to spend longer time playing the character. I'm using TIE, but still, getting through the sewers at level 3 (even level 2) seemed a bit fast (sigh, ok, I did have to decrease the difficulty setting : ).

Anyway, from your answer, I'll assume I need to do the following:
current setting - set Progress.fSkillUseFactor to 0.7280
change to (at least) - set Progress.fSkillUseFactor to 0.8819 (or, maybe 1.0234)

Anyway, I'll give that a try.

Well, while I know that what I am about to say may not help iron out the issues that folks are having with 2.0 (2.02 now isn't it?) what I did to solve the problem of the level up icon and other stuff happening was revert back to RC6. I made the changes from the earlier post made by Tejon changing nGCD.fLevelFactor from 1.0 to 0.75 and changing nGCD.bLevelCanDecrease from 0 to 1 changing these settings in version 2.02 caused the level up icon to stop showing up and I no longer got the endless rest and level up with the level up menu showing up and level going up endlessly but no skills or stats actually increasing. Okay that was indeed a run on sentence... at any rate... I no longer got those things, however I did get an entirely new problem. I had a character with Dark Brotherhood shrouded armor while she was wearing the armor she was like 3 or 4 levels higher than she was without the armor on. This was entirely repeatable, put the armor on immediately go up three or four levels take the armor off go down three or four levels. Somebody running version 2.02 out there add some DB shrouded armor armor to your character through the console or something (just for testing purposes not for cheating) and see if this happens with your character, I am almost certain that it wasn't because of any other mod that I was running. I for one would like to hear if others experience this issue as well. I went back to RC6 and it has been working beautifully ever since with no .ini changes at all. The only small hiccup that I have run into with RC6 is that if I use the "showracemenu" console command to change an eye color or hairstyle or something. I can save and play with that character perfectly fine but if I quit even if I save again and reload the same save game all of the characters attributes (not skills but attributes Strength, Endurance and all those) will be decreased to one and of course the character will be unable to move or do anything but stand in place. If I quit the game uncheck the nGCD main .esp file in OBMM reload the game and save without nGCD enabled (it doesn't matter if you leave nGCDs optional .esp files checked or not, skeletonkey and all those) then quit the game and re-enable nGCD in OBMM then start the game and reload my save game again with nGCD enabled everything will be fixed stats back to normal and everything. You can then save again and go on playing as if nothing had ever happened. This is under RC6 for anyone who chooses to use it and runs into this problem after using "showracemenu" to change something COSMETIC about their character, if you attempt to use "showracemenu" to change your entire race or something like that then you are on your own, you probably just destroyed that save game if you attempt to change something fundamental like race. I never ran into this issue under 2.02 but if it ever cropped up the above steps might fix it as well. Anyway this is just a heads up and a fix for a potential problem that can be run into for anyone who chooses to use RC6 while 2.0 is being tweaked, worked on or whatever is happening on the Tejon's end.

Does this mean they might help with the problem of getting the level up symbol? that's has never happened before.

I've never lost skill points so that config change shouldn't matter.

I'm not clear on what "nGCD.fLevelFactor from 1.0 to 0.75." will do. Will that affect my getting a level up symbol vs smooth leveling.

Any idea what could have caused that problem? Thanks.

EDIT: I did make the two changes, it adjusted my level from 21 to 15 and no level up symbol. I still don't understand what was causing the problem or why the changes fixed it. But it appears to be fixed, for the moment at least.
