Interesting news is coming out of Atlanta where the Globe and Mail is reporting that the deal for the Thrashers to sell to True North who would immediately move the team to Winnipeg is complete and pending official press conference on Tuesday. However TSN's Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger report while the terms might be done the NHL, True North and the Atlanta Spirit are saying this isn't done and Gary Doucheman is towing his usual [censored] line of stubbornly trying to keep teams with fanbases uninterested in the NHL in unprofitable arenas.
I'm not quite sure what the [censored] is going on but surely something interesting might be happening.
There's already buzz about who would switch to the Eastern conference if the Thrashers move and while the logical choice is Detroit since they've requested it for over 15 years now and were promised first dibs due to the strain of travel and time zones on fans who have to stay up til 1-2am on west coast regular season and first two rounds of playoff games,, it would leave the West with one Original Six team and a good chunk of teams that rely on Red Wing fan attendance would lose them therefore I think the NHL might go with Columbus who are the eastern most longitudinal Western Conference team and like the Wings in the Eastern Time zone. I want the Wings to go obviously. I think if this deal happens imminently Winnipeg plays one season in Atlantas spot in their division then switches over to the Northwest with the Canucks, Flames, and Oilers, and a few other teams shuffle perhaps Minny to the Central division where the Red Wings are now, then either Detroit or Columbus to the Eastern Conference with the dark horse being Nashville.
