A nice balance between "Dead is Dead" and "Norma

Post » Thu Dec 15, 2011 8:12 am

This idea is pretty straight-forward and simple, but I only just thought of it during my latest playthrough of Skyrim.

We've all probably heard of the DID play-style, which is a play-style that makes you start a new character if your current character dies. No re-loads, no do-overs, you just have to start a new character.

Well, my idea doesn't come close to approaching that extreme, but it still gives you a slight punishment for your character dying. What's the idea you ask? It's simple, there is NO player-controlled saving. This means, you cannot pause the game and save your progress (unless of course you have to stop playing).

What will this effect, you may ask? Well, here are some examples:
1) If you get half-way through a high-level dungeon, but eventually get killed, you would be forced to load one of the games "auto-saves". Usually, this will result in you losing a considerable amount of progress, thus forcing you to reconsider delving back into that particular dungeon.
2) If you're a thief character and you get caught stealing or pickpocketing, you cannot just reload a custom save and try again. You either would have to reload an auto-save (which could be from a long time ago), or you would have to deal with the consequences of being caught and continue playing.

Of course, there are many more things this play-style would effect, but these are some of the more obvious ones. To play this way, all you have to do is A) not cheat the system by "Waiting" too often in order to create your own auto-saves, and B) Change your settings so that your game does NOT auto-save at the player-menu.

Like? Dislike?

Give me your feedback!

The punishment for dying is losing progress and having to do the same thing again and again until you either back off or beat the target. There is no point in further punishment. It's not about punishment.

My problem with DID or something like yours, is that I would eventually get very bored of the game if I constantly restart things over and over again.

I have been many times get one-shoted, it's not that I wasn't careful or anything, is really that I get one shoted out of nowhere, no time for potions, no time for nothing.
Let's just face it, the game is not that designed for this.

Don't wait for our aproval, go and do it if you enjoy it, but that is my only warning, you could eventually get bored.
I would play normally at first, then try to do these things.

Good idea, another alternative could be if you die you have to drop all your gear and find some more.

That gives me an idea lol. A spell that summons your self. You aim it somewhere and teleport to that spot.

Here's what I do:

Don't die.

Or at least, try not to.

Powerful enemy in ruin? Can't best them? Don't lower the difficulty. Leave.

NEVER GO INTO ANY PLACE EVER AS SOON AS YOU FIND IT. Go back to town, stock up on supplies, be prepared to stay the night in your destination. Waiting is not cheating, just use it realistically. You can only drink one potion at a time and have to wait ten to fifteen seconds to drink another.

Don't carry around eight armor sets and twenty swords, because that makes no damn sense. Only ten potions for each effect. i.e. ten restore health/health potion etc. 15 poisons allowed.

^Not dead is dead, just treat it like it is if that's the experience you want.^

How about 1 life per soul absorbed. It's a nice dress rehearsal for hardcoe DiD, and lets you see more of the game if you're new to it.

Play roguelikes with anti-savescumming mechanics.

Skyrim fans and casual gamers will never accept this. It sounds nice in theory but casual gamers don't like this kind of mechanics and TES fans (like me) are used to F9 their way out of every trouble. I would like it but majority wouldn't.

I played a lot of games like these and most of them actually pushed me into playing the game because I was curious. However, this curiosity is lost when you experience the most of the game and curiosity turns into a pain in the ass because of low replability.

This isn't my idea of something Bethesda should add to the game, it's just an idea of a play-style people could utilize on their own.

Also, I didn't make this thread to ask for your permission for me to use this style, I was just putting this idea out there for those who want a little more of a challenge, without resorting to Dead is Dead.
