Nifskope: Copying UV Map

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:39 pm

hi,

theoretically, if I have two very similar 3d-models each in a separate .nif-file:
is it somehow possible to copy the UV map of one of these objects and replace the other's with it?
or maybe do i need another program to do that? i only know about the "edit UV" function in nifskope which makes it possible to manipulate the vertices.

help appreciated :)

The UV map lays out the polygons of the 3d model onto a 2d page so unless the 2 models were exactly the same copying the UVMap from one to the other would not work (since the polygon count is probably different or the vertices were most likely created in a different manner so they would be numbered differently) -- you would need to redo the UVMAP in a modeling program and place the new map onto the existing texture if that is what you were trying to do or as you say move the vertices around using the UV edit in Nifskope but that is a very tedious and time consuming process another alternative would be to adjust the texture by cut\pasting the pieces to fit the layout of the second UV map if you are more comfortable with texturing programs than with modeling programs.

@OP: I know how to do what you want, but only if the two models are EXACTLY the same. And sometimes they also need to have the same XYZ coordinates, but that's easy to replicate if you lose them.

NiTriShape > NiTriShapeData -- right click on NiTriShapeData and select Block > Copy (NOT "Copy Branch). Go to your exact-same-mesh, and right-click on its NiTriShapeData and select Block > Paste Over. Ta da!

Very handy when you need to replicate changes done to, say, any gloves/gauntlets, since there's the 1st person view and 3rd person meshes. Doesn't always work as expected - like I said, sometimes you might lose XYZ data on the thing you are pasting over (it'll just put the copied objects XYZ data there), but that's easy to change.

hi,

they're not the same, just very similar.
it seems logical to me now that you cannot copy (/transfer) the UV map, if they're not...

anyway, thanks for your suggestions :)
