Nifskopenif file question

I've used nifskope a lot but only for checking out and assigning textures. I'm not very familiar with the rest of it.

So, I've made a hair in blender and exported it as 3ds (I've noticed exporting it as 3ds doesn't mess up the material and uvs like obj does). The imported file looks fine in nifskope except that I've had to reassign the textures.

I saved it as a nif file and then made it a new body part in the cs. I gave the hair to Lette and put her in the "abandoned shipwreck cabin" which I use to check out whether a face looks good on the npc.

But. I get a message that the hair model is not a nif file and that the default marker will be displayed instead. So I get a bald Lette inside a white box. Why???

I've browsed the internet for clues and also studied other hair mesh files in order to find out what the problem is, but can't figure it out.
