Night of Knights

People.. They disgust me, I thought, the milling crowds of the market district sending a chill down my spine. "Oops, sorry, good sir," coughed a man as he bumped into me, flecks of spittle impacting on my shoulder plate. He wiped beads of sweat off his forehead, "I'm Alex Marveck, it's a pleasure."

I put on a fake, but pleasant smile, and offered a handkerchief to the sickly man. "Vincent Galien, at your service," I replied, using one of my various aliases. I had picked this one up in Bravil, when I had been a Fighters Guild ruffian. Vincent Galien had been a pleasant enough Breton, perhaps one of the only people in Cyrodiil I could call a friend. He was a shy man, and never stuck his nose where it didn't belong. Loyal and obedient, Vincent was a good man, one of the examples that these sickly bastards should follow, I thought as I looked around. "I'll be on my way now."

"Please sir, could you spare a coin?" asked Alex, his hands grasping at my arm. Swiftly and unsuspectingly, I swiped my hand backwards, slapping Alex across the face.

"Don't you dare touch me, knave!" I spat, before striding away through the crowd, leaving the man grovelling in a pool of his own filthy self. Maybe it was a little harsh, it was just a poor beggar trying to get some money... But then again, he could have been just as successful as me if he had tried. Maybe I'm giving him too much credit, but oh, what do I care? I'll most likely never see the wretch again.

Pushing my way through the crowd, I finally arrived at Jensine's Merchandise. Slowly opening the oak door, the door knob cold against my skin, I stepped inside. Jensine was a lot like Vincent, loyal and not curious. She lived a more or less simple life. "Hello, Jensine," I chimed, and she looked up from a gnarled piece of parchment, a bang of blonde hair fell in front of her left eye.

Brushing the bang to the side, she eyed me up and down. No doubt she took me as a noble or some haughty Imperial Guard, and she crossed he arms. "Anything I can get for you?" she wondered in he normal, unremarkable voice.

"You mean you don't remember me?" oh by the Nine it was fun playing with people. I had no doubt in my mind that that is exactly why they created the humans and mer. I smiled, my gruff beard and tone probably made me seem like some mountain man, if it weren't for my shining steel armor.

Shaking her head slightly, she said, "No, not at all..." then she paused, "I don't remember all of my customers' faces. Even though I hardly get any."

I shrugged, and sat down on a chair. Crossing my armored legs, I pulled out my favorite book, which just so happened to be Jensine's favorite book. I began humming a tune, reading "The Immortal Blood" and had probably started to get on the woman's nerves.

Jensine quickly recognized the hum, and realized I had been reading that book. "D-d-dad?" she stammered, dropping the parchment on the floor.

"Is it really you?" asked the dumbfounded Jensine, her eyes still wide in shock.

"Yes, darling. I have returned... It's been a good twenty years since I left," I replied, still flipping through Immortal Blood. It was of course a complete fib. It was extremely easy to pose as someone these days, what with the new Imperial files. The Imperials were taking records on every citizen in Cyrodiil, and getting to those files wasn't very difficult for a man like me. Her father had left in service to the Imperial Legion about twenty years ago. The man was dead, but his daughter had never been notified. "I'm sorry I missed your childhood, but it seems like you were successful enough."

It was hard for me to do this, Jensine was a good person at heart, but I had to be a cold man sometimes. Taking money from people was what I do, and I wasn't in a position to get soft with my victims. "Daddy.. I can't believe it! I always dreamed you'd come back," she exclaimed, wrapping me in a hug. She sat on my lap, arms around my neck.

"So what ever happened to Angeline?" I asked, referring to Jensine's mother. Of course, I already knew what had happened. She had died of the plague, her body thrown into a huge pyre like the other plague victims.

"Mommy..." sniffled the woman, a tear falling down her face. "Mom came down with the plague."

"No!" I shouted, in a fake display of emotion. Jensine stumbled off of my lap as I stood, the wooden chair falling back and tipping onto a barrel full of farm equipment. "Not my sweet, sweet Angeline!"

"I'm so sorry, daddy."

"No! You don't understand.. I... I wasted twenty years of my life for that witch and she died on me!" I fell to my knees, tears streaming down my face. I suddenly felt very guilty, bringing all this grief to poor Jensine. "I'm sorry, Jensine... I couldn't control myself. I have something... Very important I have to ask of you."

"It's okay, Dad," she said nodding, "Well, whatever could it be?"

"I.. I contracted a cancer. It's in my nose, and, the monks say they can exorcise it, but for a hefty cost. Working in the legion didn't get me any money... I ask of you to lend me two thousand gold." It was indeed a hefty price, and I wondered if Jensine would believe me.

"Two.. Thousand?" she stammered.

"I'll die if you don't, they say that it will consume my entire face!"

"Don't worry daddy.. I had been saving up money for retirement... But I would rather keep you."

"I... I don't know what to say. Thank you so much, darling. I promise I will pay it all back!" Another lie, I had no intention on paying it back. This money would keep me going for another year or two. I was surprised at how well this was going, and I followed Jensine into the basemant, no doubt where her savings were.

She stopped at a wall and pulled a torch down. With a cranking noise, a small portion of the wall opened up, revealing a huge sack full of septims. "Please, dad. Take it... Go back to the monks and get the cancer removed, then we can live together forever!"

"I.. I don't know if I can. If you really want me to, honey."

"I do."

With that, I reached my gauntlet into the safe, and grasped the bag. It weighed a good forty pounds, and I slung it over my shoulder. "I will be back in four days. I must travel to Bruma and cure myself."

"I'll be here when you get back," she replied, longing in her eyes, tears streaking her face as she waved me goodbye. I exited the basemant, leaving the woman down there. I strode out, after stuffing the sack into my backpack, into the fading crowds. Pushing two men out of the way, I began to walk with my head up, and in a very haughty manner. I had just scored the best jackpot of my whole career! The morals still left inside my rotting husk of a soul cried out for me to return the money, but I was in deep debt, and I had to take responsibility.

Jensine fell to her knees, sobs wracking her thin form. "Why? Why!?" she screeched, and rolled onto her side.

The room around her was dark and foreboding, and had an eerily evil atmosphere. There were barrels of equipment, and sacks of stuff that no one would buy. I'm a failure, she thought, crying into her hands.

Slipping a rusty iron dagger out of her sheath, she uttered in the darkness, "I'm sorry, daddy," before plunging the blade deep into her throat.

With a thump her body fell, and somewhere in the darkness Jensine passed away.

Again very good stuff. Although something confused me: Was this man just pretending to be her father, stealing his identity to get her money, or was he really actually the dad? And why did Jensine kill herself? Did the loss of her money have to do with it?

Keep doin' it :goodjob:

He was pretending to be her father. The recent files that the Imperial Legion took basically record every single citizen and the big events that have happened in their life like having a kid, death, being born, and that sort of stuff.

Why Jensine killed herself is hard to explain I kind of wanted the reader to imagine why.

Glad you liked it, though.

Yeah I thought it was that, but just wanted to be certain. Very good if you ask me.

And that's fine as well, I'll just think up a cool reason :P
