This is an idea that came into my head a while ago, I'll post it and see if anybody likes it enough to join. It's kind of like Dawn of the Dead, just not zombies. The back story is pretty long so if you don't have a high attention span you can skip to the story now and the plot.
Back Story:
After the Great War, Chicago was almost completely destroyed, only tribal villages remained around the former town. The two towns Dirt Haven and Brahmin Wood eventually grew in size and population. In time, the raider camp Devil's Graveyard became more civilized until they eventually abandoned their ancestors primal ways. The three towns eventually came into contact with each other and started to trade. In 2280, the three towns banded together and pushed the super mutants out of Chicago. The three groups then moved into Chicago themselves, calling the new town New Chicago. Not all of the old towns inhabitants left for new Chicago, though. Only a select few of 50 from all three towns descended upon New Chicago. These pioneers moved to the lakefront, removing the rubble by dumping it to the north into Lake Michigan. Four years later, in 2284, the secret to purify water reached New Chicago and the citizens built a lakefront purifier. Realizing their purified water was drifting into the radiated water, they built a barrier in the lake that enclosed a small section of it, keeping the radiated water and whatever else may have been living in the water at the time out of New Chicago. Though four years later, they pushed all the super mutants out, they didn't stay out. Super mutants started attacking the city, which prompted the citizens to build a concrete barrier connected by pre-war buildings. Though the barrier was 25 miles away from the town, the citizens said this was so the town could expand. With the lake on one side, and the large concrete barrier on the other, New Chicago was protected from the dangers of the outside world for the next 80 years.
The story now:
It is the year 2360. New Chicago's population has reached 150. Life has returned somewhat to what it was before the War. Citizens enjoy purified food and drink, the secret to making concrete was found, and much of the cities pothole have been patched and concrete houses are being built, though not practical. Since the city hasn't faced the dangers off the wasteland in 80 years, the need for guns have almost completely disappeared. Despite the large population, it is a tight-knit city where everybody has at least seen everybody at least once, if not talked to them. Children and teens go to a school. A government was founded along with public works.
The plot:
Due to New Chicago's growing population, the town mayor decides to expand. He sends out some public works workers to find a sewer that is not in the city that goes to Lake Michigan so they can easily move purified water. Two workers open up a sewer 5 miles from the city, ignoring the fact that is blocked by a large amount of rubble. Inside to their dismay they find a 100 year old breeding ground for feral ghouls. (For the story Feral Ghouls will be able to breed.) Now thousands of feral ghouls are unleashed upon the city, with no where to go. A call from the mayor goes out to a near by BoS base saying they are in distress. The base responds by saying they will come but it will take them 5-6 days to arrive. Blocked by the lake and the barrier that once protected them, the citizens of New Chicago have nothing else to do but one thing: survive.
