Night time in video games

Post » Sat Sep 24, 2011 8:01 pm

It would be cool if there was nocternal animals/monsters. Also sleeping creatures (only at night) you could sneak past, but if you mess it up they could backstab you for extra damage.
As for lighting it would be cool if it depended on if the moon was full or half. Clouds would make it darker and think of hw cool a dragon fight would be if it was only iluminated by lightning strikes, or when it shot fire at you!

That would be incredibly awesome. Pitch blackness with heavy rainfall. Ocassional lightning strike and thunder. Only way to tell where the dragon is would be if it were flaming up for another strike while flying around. Gives it more of an increased feeling of accomplishment instead of only waiting for daytime to fight them. I fully intend to fight the dragons in as varied climates and scenarios as possible. To liven and change things up greatly.
Especially would be nice to see the stars and moons in the night time sky. Could be the basis for how much the particular game cell the PC and immediate player area is illuminated.

I love night time that is actually dark in video games. What was that mod that I loved in New Vegas?... Fellout? I'll definitely have night times modded to be darker in Skyrim if needed.

For all those saying "brightness slider"....

I'm not superstitious, but sometimes I feel like there are little internet gnomes in cyberspace that type out contradictary posts on forums just for the sake of conflict. It's hard to believe there's a rational mind behind the screen name posting things like that.

At least nobody suggested I "close my eyes if I want it darker" so far.

Yeah, the problem with any kind of slider (brightness/gamma) is that it makes all of the game darker/brighter. It wouldn't just make the nights darker but the day and other sources of light too.
Really, how dark they made the underground places in Oblivion should have been how dark the world map is at night (maybe on a full moon too). Underground, without any light source, should mean not being able to see your own hand even if it is touching your nose.

I agree. Was play Tomb Raider: Underworld recently and was in a ruin with no windows at the bottom of the sea which was covered in ice. It should have been one of the darkest places on earth but I didn't even have to turn on my light to see where I was going.

I would love that! Wandering around with only the illumination of your light spell (or fireball) to reveal where your steps might lead you! :)

Agreed.

I enjoy playing stealthy characters whenever I can, and the gross lack of darkness in many games bugs the Hell outta me.

Luckily, I play TES and Fallout on PC, so there are mods available to remedy the problem. If the lightning in Skyrim isn't quite what I'm hoping for, I'm sure a mod will pop up pretty quickly to make it more realistic.

So it's not a hude deal for me. :)

I agree with this. I loved the darker night mods for Oblivion/Fallout. They add so much atmosphere and give you a reason to use those torches/lights sometimes, or seek shelter at night.

Hm. it could be interesting although I'm not a huge fan of light spells and torches, it might get old fast to me. Although the newer light spell looked pretty cool and torches actually can light enemies on fire so maybe it wouldn't.

That looks great. I hope a mod like that gets released for Skyrim soon after release.
Imagine what dynamic lighting will do with an environment like that. Can't wait to shoot light balls with my staff.

Something like this: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/595805657193362725/D794B407E0E513B4F068838654F6BA11DDE5308B/? Or like this: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4039/4369513612_96cefd4f60.jpg?

That's STALKER: Call of Pripyat. I'd strongly recommend it for anyone's game literacy library.

Yes, I was very disappoint when I saw the dunmer thief. That's not night time!

Thank god there's always been mods for just that, for all the bethesda games.

It's funny because Minecraft's night time is like that, and that's an indie game... :whistling:

I've got a mod for that...

Amazing mod btw...
It's almost impossible to see in some nights... (There are some bright nights too)

I think it's All natural and immersive interiors...
Immersive interiors changes the interior of the houses... (And seeing through the window)
and All natural changes the weather ...

I have a feeling you're not a fan of light spells and torches because you never needed them before! If toggling either on and off was simple and not a clunky menu design, then I think everyone would find the night time feature enjoyable!

Nights should look like http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-qJvOz6Cagto/TWL5oJYSEnI/AAAAAAAADy4/ePRRc-5gpt4/s1600/The%2BElder%2BScrolls%2BIV%2B-%2BShivering%2BIsles%2B%2528Xbox%2B360%2529%2B-%2BMania.jpg.

Seriously, how has Shivering Isles not been mentioned? I have never seen a night sky more dazzling than in that realm. I know that that degree of constellations has no place in Skyrim, but it would be beautiful nonetheless. :spotted owl:

I'll take playability over darkness any day. Besides, I can still see outside at night in the real world.

Minecraft is only like that with low monitor light settings for night time. Caves are dark yes though. Like I said I'll take playability over that any day though. A small handful of dark cave dungeons would be fine, but anything more would get old fast to me.

If they made it so night was really dark...they should also make the moon illuminate the ground and surroundings. I mean, on a full moon around here, you can almost read by it... Well, you can with a bunch of eyestrain. On any night with half or more waxing moons, you can totally walk around with no problem at night. :)

Or maybe have some Dwermer active night-vision goggles. ;)

You can see in the dark?

Oh wait, you're probably referring to a street with street lights at every corner.

Herp derp.

I agree. Having night actually being DARK, would be a wonderful immersion. I remember in EQ it was pretty dark at night too. It's a shame more games don't follow this.

Darker nights that make it necessary to travel with torch or lantern in one hand. Humanoid NPCs would also need to travel by torch or lantern. In any case this mod was easily implemented in Fallout:NV so if Bethesda doesn't do it we will.

It's been a while since I've played any of the TES games. Any races see in the dark? It would be cool seeing in the dark like infra-vision.
