Night time in video games

Post » Sun Sep 25, 2011 12:40 am

Well i hope Night eye as the Khajiit's special ability doesn't require your Arm being up, i would prefer it being like a Natural thing to them where you could just turn it on and off

If it came naturally to them, wouldn't their eyes more than likely adjust to the light or dark independently of their personal control over it? I'd sure has hell prefer that.

I'd like night time to be darker. It'd be a great addition to the game, and I'm sure they could work it in somehow.

Even if it's a toggle power for Khajiits, the other 90% of the people will need to hold Night Eye. In the Demo, Todd had to equip and hold for Detect Life so holding Night Eye is very likely.

And both detect life and night eye are really small effects that aren't worth wasting your hands on. Unless the night is so dark you can't move without it of course. Then it sux to be you dual wield assassin.

I think it just depends on the surroundings. I mean, if your in a wide open tundra, like where the giant was picked up by the dragon in the demo (I cant remember the nearby city's name... Whiterun i think?), its going to be probually easy to see without a torch, I mean, theres two moons right above you! (unless its cloudy or whatnot). But I do agree, deep forests or various dungeons would contain SOOO much more atmosphere with a further lack of light :3

Wouldn't that be annoying? What if you enter/exit a cave every 5 minutes? Unless you invent some sort of automatic slider I can't see that working/many people doing that.

I suppose you can always just turn the brightness down on your PC or TV

the problem with that is that the AI isn't effected any more or less by that. He wants a more realistic nighttime experience. If it is more difficult for your character to see it should be more difficult for the AI.

Please stop giving these "turn the brightness down" answers resposnes, they are obviously trolls. You might as well just close your eyes if you want the best darkness effects right? Herple derple purple nurple.

Some Arma2 footage, one of few games that manage to get it right:
No moon at all, pitch black: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzAaXx22e7M
PvP deathmatch with no moon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4fHYBbL2JA
With moon, very immersive (they even whisper :)): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nF2HOE8cxs

But for true dark nights to work properly, time has to be slowed down significantly.

I agree. Darker Nights (and Dungeons) mod is one of the mods I can't play Oblivion without anymore.

I think the only reason why developers don't make too dark areas is because it could be frustrating to try to navigate if you don't carry a light source with you. In darkness in real life you use touch to navigate, and you feel when you move even though you can't see. In games there'd have to be touch/hit and movement markers on screen to tell the player that he just walked against a wall and is no longer moving...
