Nightmares and Dreams in Skyrim

Post » Tue Mar 01, 2011 3:49 am

Hello everyone, just thought i would make this thread about having nghtmares in skyrim, i noticed on oblivion that you get nightmares being a vampire, and lycan, and a lich, with the mods, and thought it would be cool if you could have these nightmares as a normal thing in game, cause the short descriptions are quite interesting and would add a little extra to just sleeping and healing up, anyone agree? should they add random nightmares and dreams?

As long as its optional as it will probably get repetitive and annoying after a while if they don't make it optional.

Not really
Plus, I think it could easily become tedious.

The nightmares in oblivion and Morrowind provided some background into being a vampire.
Ancestral dreams.
They were cool and sometimes totally creepy.

In Morrowind they were more apt, as Telvanni really were interested in you. (and one of the few factions that would talk to you, or at least not attack as soon as you spoke.)
And there was a dream about doing a quest for a vampire ancient, of wich there were a few.

Vampirism in oblivion was a bit underdeveloped. I would have liked some vampire quests.

If vampirism is in Skyrim, I would like to have the old dreams, and some new ones :)
I liked them.

Nightmares and dreams have always come to the main character for certain plot events. While these are few and far between and should stay as such, I would love it if they were actually playable, not just text-based reports of what you experienced, but you actually get to experience them.

you mean like that quest in oblivion when you go to the dream world to rescue hennantier or what ever his name is

It would seem to me like constantly waking up with a message telling me I had some dream or another could get boring after a while. While having the character experience dreams can be good if they serve a narrative purpose (LIke the dream sendings you get a few times during Morrowind's main quest.) but just having the character dream at regular times would seem kind of pointless. It's not like I've ever looked at the game and found it unrealistic that I never see my character dream, generally, I just accept that maybe my character does dream regularly, but since normally, those dreams aren't relevant to anything, they're not shown. The general rule in fiction is that if you see a character have a dream, it's probably somehow important to the plot.

Exactly, except these are your own dreams you are navigating. Damn, even choices you make in them could have repercussions to the main quest. Dreams are never just dreams in TES...

The dreams would have to be plot-driven, not random, regular occurrences.

Check this out: You go to sleep and awaken in a strange, ethereal grove and you can hear strange melodic singing all around you, all of a sudden the ground around you begins to collapse and you have to jump from floating rock to floating rock to keep from falling. If you fall, you wake up and you have 'failed' the dream, no second chances (no saving in dreams?), and if you survive to reach some sort of portal you 'win' the dream and the outcome sways the main story slightly...? Could be very cool indeed.

I quite liked the dreams in Morrowind, the one that introduced you to Dagoth Ur was quite intriguing, and really got me interested in the game. Imo dreams could be used as a good way to hook players into the main quest instead of using a forced sense of urgency as they did in Oblivion.

Oh look, wolves coming through the trees, wait, where's my sword, and it's really cold, hey, where the hell are my clothes, those wolves are close, oh my god I,m a deer. Now there's a dream I'd like to play in Skyrim.

There were a few more.
Top of my head: sironliwe at the Vivec mages guild
A telvanni councillor
A woman in Ald'ruhn under skar
Marara

The quests for the faction you joined, Aundae, Berne, Quarra.

A couple of dreams that appear once and are related to the main quest or some other quest would be great.

Be interesting for a side quest to have fights with passed strong foes.

Also be an interesting way to implement combat training.(recieve no EXP)

Optional and maybe just one small random encounter while sleeping. You get rewarded with a bit of XP, but if you lose you just wake up.

And maybe a dream of where you find a map or something, and when you wake up you mysteriously find a map in your inventory guiding you to long lost treasure.

Could be cool, as long as they aren't too common and don't get repeated - I'd get bored of them if they were.

It'd be interesting if the nightmares were actual cutscenes, Or better yet, maybe even a sort of interactive micro-quest. It'd add an even more immersive feeling than just getting a wall of text every few times you sleep.

Maybe add an option to skip them too, for people who don't actually want to do them.

Or maybe instead of changing anything you get a glimpse of whats to come. Quick vision of some character or item you will soon need.

As long as they are FMVs (like Bloodmoon's Werwolf video) or interactive (but in moderation) I'll be happy.

I didn't have the patience to read "You've had a dream...it was about" after I've slept.
