Nine Divines Creation Myth?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:21 pm

In Greek Mythology, The gods were birthed from the Titans. After the Gods beat the Titans, they became rulers and sought to create the world in their way. In the Elder Scrolls Universe, I was wondering...where did the Nine Divines come from? Were they created by Titan like creatures or were they simply the ones who created everything? What is their story on how they became to be? Did they create all the races of Nirn or was man and mer already here before they were? How does the Daedra fit into this if the Divines are called Aedra? I want the crash course here folks. Everything there is to know and more! Thank you.

Scroll down to the bottom of http://www.imperial-library.info/nine_divines/ and read all the links, and you'll know about as much of any of it as any of us do.

Be warned that some of the sources DO conflict each other in Elder Scrolls lore. That's just how it is. Different religions on Nirn agree on the origins of their gods and of mortals about as much as different religions on Earth do. There are some common threads, though. Look for what each story has in common and you'll find the truth or some version of it.

All fine reads, thank you for taking time to answer my questions :) I believe I understand it now. In a strange sense, its like Greek Mythology. I read somewhere in another passage that the Ayleid's had their own "pagon gods" as well? This be true, how would that conflict in today's god worship in Cyrodiil? Are these lesser gods now long forgotten or do some cases in the remote parts of Nirn still worship them? This being based if that information was true.

It's important to distinguish between some and most.

The Nine Divines have their origin in both the Aldmeri pantheon of the Ayleid and the Nordic pantheonhttp://www.imperial-library.info/obbooks/shezzardivines.shtml. This is a good indication that like all other Mer with the exception of the Dunmer the Ayleid venerated the Aedra, their ancestors.

This doesn't exclude them from bargaining and trafficking with the Daedra, they are after all their cousins nor does it exclude actual veneration but not on a large scale. This might best be compared with some of High Rocks nobility, though clearly followers of the Nine many have a summoning room to make their own bargains with the Daedrahttp://www.imperial-library.info/dfbooks/b053_oblivion.shtml.
