Nine major cities?

Post » Tue Oct 11, 2011 9:00 am

There's a story up on Kotaku with a picture of a map of Skyrim that was supposedly handed out at a Moscow gaming show. It shows what appear to be NINE major cities, complete with coat of arms. I know we've been told 5 major cities, so this is pretty weird. I don't want to put up a link because the story says that the map has been scanned in (linking to scanned content is a no-no according to the forum rules). Anyway the cities listed on the map are:

  • Solitude
  • Markarth
  • Morthal
  • Falkreath
  • Whiterun
  • Windhelm
  • Dawnstar
  • Winterhold
  • Riften

Some of them are in orange text and some are in black. Actually looking at it again 7 of them are in orange. So I guess maybe those are the major cities? It's funny though because the smaller settlements like Riverwood don't have a coat of arms. Maybe there are just three different city sizes or classifications.

DISCUSS!

This ^

Also I'm pretty sure the smaller settlements like Riverwood and Dragonbridge are either villages/towns or major points of interest.

Well it wasn't leaked. They handed the maps out. My only hesitation was because the image I saw was a scan.

I'm sorry, but a mod is going to come in here, find a problem with this thread, and shut it down. Say whatever you want while you can

That was posted in my thread. Did I break those rules? nope. Was the thread pointless? Nope. But it was still closed.

Ah, well that makes sense. Any info on which cities are which? I remember reading somewhere the name of the city shown in the Dunmer thief screenshot, and we've all seen Whiterun, so those two are walled. Any others that I missed?

Just everyone be careful not to Google "Skyrim official map" :whisper: . Is it just me, or do these forum rules make no sense sometimes?

The forum rules are fine... it's just that the mods nitpick.

The Dunmer thief shot is presumably Solitude, (note the similarity in the banners/coat of arms). The other 4 "big" cities are Whiterun, Windhelm, Markarth, and Riften. The other cities with coats of arms are capitals of their hold, but won't necessarily be as unique as the "big 5." Falkreath, for example, is said to have the exact same style of buildings as Riverwood.

As far as the building style, that's totally fine with me. I was a little worried that only having 5 big cities would make Skyrim feel a little barren compared to Oblivion. But 9 big cities whether they're "major" or not sounds much better to me.

yeah, just to reiterate:

What's up with this whole map discussion being banned?

I mean, first it was 'no links to scans' and we're fine with that
Now we can't even discuss the map? Where does it end?

I'm coming to you about this because you're one of the few 'well rounded' Mods we have.

I mean, it's about as 'leaked' as every other bit of information we've found out about with this game.

What makes this different?

It's OK to discuss the Russian map.

I understand there may be some confusion about how people got their hands on it, but for the time being, please don't link to the image.

Buuuut anyways, but to the OP; I'm hoping for an abundant of 'small settlements.'

BTW, what is Helgen? small settlement?

What's the point of rules if they're not enforced?

Btw, I understand the reasoning for most of the rules (basically, the amount of immature people here make most of them necessary). It is still frustrating at times though. Like I can't have a civil, mature discussion about children dying. That's frustrating. Oh well...

oblivion had 9 major cities aswell... it actually had 10 at one point (we know this as sutch) but they removed sutch for some reason and now the cities match the number of divines.

It is OK to discuss this info, so long as you do not link to the scanned images.

However, please stay on topic. If you wish to discuss moderator actions and forum policies you may send a PM to a moderator.

As for the nine cities, we already knew about these from the CE map revealed at Quakecon. These are the capitals of each of the nine holds (Haafinheim, Hjaalmarch, The Pale, Winter Hold, The Reach, White Hold, Falkreath, Eastmarch, The Rift). Some of these cities are larger than the others.

It has the same type of symbol next to it as Riverwood does, so I'd say it's a small town.

Plus, the 7 small towns are considerably larger than Cyrodil's small towns were.
