Have fun! I highly recommend playing through the Dark Brotherhood and Thieve's Guild quest lines when you get chance, they're really good and much superior to Skyrim's. I guess I love them so much because I love playing stealth characters.
Oh yeah, forgot about the Shivering Isles! It is imperative you purchase that DLC if you don't have it already. Well worth the money.
I dunno about ridiculous but it certainly is more difficult.
Oblivion is awesome in its own way, and it does a lot of things different from Skyrim. All TES games do a lot of things different, that's what I've noticed.
Anyways, enjoy. Oblivion was my first TES game. When I discovered it back in 2008, I realized one day that I had been waiting for a game like this (large, random, open world with a Medieval fantasy theme to it) for over 20 years
I suppose that's the great thing about TES games, each game is different and has its own "flavour". So in the end, there's a TES game for everyone, whether they're hardcoe RPG fans or filthy casuals!
I like to switch between games, partly for this reason. I play one for awhile, then another, then another. By the time I cycle back to the first game again, a bit of that 'newness' feeling has returned for me.
I generally spend about 5 or 6 months playing a Bethesda game before I move on to another. I played Oblivion from April to October last year and then I began playing Fallout 3 in early October. In another month or two I'll be coming back to either Morrowind or Skyrim. Or maybe Oblivion. Who knows? The impulse hasn't grabbed me yet, so I don't know which game it will be.
I love the fact that these games are different from each other. It's a big part of what makes cycling between them so interesting. If they were all alike I think I'd lose interest in the series pretty fast.
Yeah, I have been experiencing that feeling again while playing Morrowind. (which I just started playing last month)
Oh, you'll also probably notice that mudcrabs play a much larger role in Oblivion...
That's pretty neat about the 'newness' factor you speak of. I bet if I stopped playing Oblivion for 6 months, it might begin to feel more new for me too. Problem is, how do I stop? I'm like, addicted to TES 4.
My pattern is: Oblivion pretty much year-round, Skyrim from Fall to about May, Fallout during summer months. The fact that it's summer outside ..... I can't get into Skyrim if I know it's 90 degrees outside. But I have no problem getting into Fallout.
For stealth characters, I feel it worth pointing out that the homes in the Imperial City are huge, and generally come with a main floor, upper bedroom, and a basemant. Lots of loot to be had.
And yeah, the Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion is amazing. You'll want to create a independent save file when you get to go to the Dinner Party.
One thing Skyrim does so much better then Oblivion...the Daedric missions are a lot more boring.
Not to mention you can use the sewers to..ah, access the businesses.
Also...minor spoiler here.
So long as you don't do the quest, the Pawn shop in the Imperial City will buy anything you bring him...regardless of how you acquired it, without being a part of the Thieves Guild.
If I remember right, that is.
