L.A. Noire Thread #2

Nice write up DarthRavanger, thanks. So you can't ready your weapon whenever you want?

Nope. The game decides when you can use weapons.

They use facial scanning for face animations.. but all the rest looks like a cartoon. A cartoon with real life faces. Wut.

Red dead redemption was great, mostly because of the free world of playing poker, hunt and stuff. L.A. Noire doesn't seem to be something for me. If I get it for free, I could play it, if I must pay for it, I wouldn't buy it. *There are many games that i wouldn't want to play even if I did get them for free*

You can beat it in a day.

Well if you're talking about being a cop in actual uniform, as in a patrol officer then yes, you beat that section pretty fast. But if you're talking about the whole game, then you better be able to play for at least 20 hours straight.

I'm in Homicide right now, and there's no way you can beat in a day without playing it completely straight through with no breaks.

Yeah, that's true. It took me only one day's worth of time, but I've been playing it almost non-stomp. Summer break gives ya a lot of free-time. If you add finding all the collectibles, driving every car, and all the pop-up missions it would take significantly longer to get 100%. Though honestly I didn't find the stuff outside the main cases very fun.

I've been enjoying finding the hidden cars, and the street crime cases are always interesting. Gives you a little action every now and then (and showed me for the first time that Cole CAN get run over by fast cars. Not a pretty sight)

You know what's not very pretty? last homicide case, you gotta cross some wooden planks at some point. Fall off the one with the highest altitude and you have quite the fall. Fall off the one with the lower altitude and you can survive, but you can tell by the scream that it hurt.

Love the moments like that, just not something you really expect. But that car thing totally got me by surprise. So I'm chasing a suspect, suspect runs across the street, I'm in an alleyway, so I can't see any cars coming and all I can think about is chasing the suspect. I start to run across the street and BAM I get run over by a car going by very fast. I thought I might just get pushed back a little bit like in Mafia II, but what actually happened was very different. Cole actually went under the car, screaming in pain as you hear the tires running over him, and as the car drives away you see his mangled body laying in the street. Ouch

Actually, to all the naysayers, I was done with disc two after about 11 to 12 hours. That was doing about 10-15 side missions to that point (they get repetitive as well). The fact is, the game is just easy and repetitive. Its not hard to beat it in a day. I actually had to slow down just to get somthing out of it. So yes, the game is short with little to no replay value. I could see 100% this in about a fifth, or a sixth of the time it took to 100% Red Dead, which took me a week to do. I guess Im just a great detective. So I stick with the "rental only" tag. The game is 25-30 hours if you 100% it and your slow. That is not worth 63 bucks to me.

Then again, my standards are probably higher than most of yours. I only buy RPGs, Strategy and some sports titles. Basically games I can get 100+ hours out of. I rent everything else. Even if L.A. was 40-50 hours, I couldn't advocate buying it, since there's just really no replay value. Other than playing it again a year or so down the road after the particulars of each case begin to get hazy. Its like a choose your own adventure book. Its fun while it lasts, but there's no reason to play it again since you know exactly what to do. I also go extremely hard on games, can and will play them all day and night. Im just core like that.

Not too far yet, but I'm loving it so far. My only problem is people tend not to react the way I'll expect them to, getting mad at something that I didn't mean to be offensive. Still, it's a very good game. Better than I expected, in some ways. One thing I don't understand is the random Street Crimes though. How do they work? I know you unlock them as you progress through the main story, but if you miss one do you miss your chance to ever do it? What if you aren't in a police car and can't be called, do they still show up on your map?

Yes they do, but you might not notice the icon since you can't accept the radio call. Look for red colored icons of a man running on the pause menu map.

I see. And if you miss doing one they stack up and you can do them all later, right?

YOu can do them later if you miss a call, but I'm not sure if you can do all the street calls in one case or if they are spread out across multiple cases.

really liking it, on the topic of Cole getting hit by cars and falling and such.

i was at the part where you have to climb the library tower, and fell off the building, and landed straight on my head.......after like 10 seconds he got up like nothing happened

I'm about 8 hours in and I'm on Disc 2 - Homicide case 4.

I'm worried about getting through it too quickly, but I only picked it up today

Homicide is one of the longer desks, but don't worry, you still have two desks to through. Anyway, you have cases 5 and 6 to go through before your done with Homicide and can move on to Vice.

Good stuff.

Think I'll leave it for a few days and pick it up again. Don't want to eat it all at once and feel bloated.

Is anyone doing the badge challenge?

My game came with a little envelope containing photo negatives. The negatives show places in the game to collect police badges...but I dont know if theres a reward for finding them or anything.

Well I would do it if PSN store was up. But for now I can't download The Naked City code to play the challenge.

Damn thats irritating.Im not sure yet if you are missing much. The dlc case has to be selected from the replay case menu, but I think the badges will be there during any case.I think ill leave all that for another day myself.

I have to say, the frame rate on the 360 is pretty low at times, which is annoying. It seems to happen when cars are moving in cut scenes. The ps3 is free of this issue I hear, so theres a plus.

Edit - About time for a new thread OP.

I don't mind it too much. I haven't found all the collectibles and I'm not even out of Homicide yet so I have plenty of content to go through before the store is back.
