Non-equipped Loot Appearance

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 6:48 pm

I know everyone's been looking at the http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/bethesda/elderscrolls/elderscrollsv/bear610ed.jpg, and I've been thinking. I know very well concept art is penned out to bring inspiration, and I could be overlooking, but our Nordic hero is seen carrying all his equipment in a visible fashion. He is gripping his steel sword warily in his right hand, using his magical staff as an aid in transversing the snowy slopes in his left, carrying his strapped shield on his back, and has a small axe strapped to his right thigh, and an unknown weapon against his left thigh.

Games like Mount and Blade have done this before, and I think it brings a sense of immersion. I can see this being a problem, for most of our inventories are filled to the brim with a surplus of loot and magical artifacts, and it wouldn't exactly be possible to show all this on our character. Like I said, I'm quite sure I'm overlooking, but would it even be worth it to have our character show non-equipped loot?

Yeah I think it would be cool, but definetly not all of our items. I think the best way they could do this is have the items that you have hot-keyed be visible on your character.

How about the player just has his/her "favorite slot" weapons shown?

They could make it so only the items in your "favorites" list appear on you. They mentioned instead of having hot keys like Oblivion and Fo3 they are going to allow you to set up a quick select menu of your favorite stuff. Whether it be armor, weapons, spells, potions or a combination of whatever. I gather it will be similar to the quick select menu from Dragon Age Origins or how you select weapons/food in Saint's Row if you ever played that. Although what if you have a bunch of claymores in your quick select?

I don't know... It's a cool idea but I'm not sure how they could do it

No, unless it was moderated in some such as only certain items could be shown and only a certain amount. Would look a bit silly watching your character walking along with a Daedric Cuirass or two hanging from thier back.

Though if the player could choose what were shown, so you could find a skull in some tomb, and have it hanging from your necromancers belt.

The player needs a travel pack or sack or bag or something to carry his/her items in.

I would like to see that, but only to a certain extent.

A barbarian carrying 200 potions strapped to every part of his body would be quite comical.

I wouldn't mind seeing a satchel or pack or something to give your inventory some context. Something similar to The Witcher's inventory system, where you'd have slots for your two primary weapons as well as hip/waist slots for axes or knives or whatever. Especially if we are supposed to be able to switch, on the fly, between different combinations of weapons and abilities.

Morrowind was a perfect game and there the hero just pulled his claymore out of his pocket ..... uhm wait.

....

Would be cool to have some of your eq shown on your body though, yes. You could have slots for them, like clothing slots.... but hey! Dual wielding is in, right? That means we'll have at least one scabbard/whatever on each hip/back.... and the GI article talked about pulling ones shield off one's back (although that might just be to put some color into the story that was being told) ....

Some of the loot, yes!

But not all! Imagine me having 10 different weapons... how weird would that look :P

OR... Bethesda could do something like: add 2-3 "visible slots" for weapons, and when they are full, the rest of the weapons that you have un-equipped won't show.

Obviously not all our stuff can show! I'm really liking all of the visible slot ideas though. It makes sense, and it can be done. Keep the ideas coming.

As was mentioned, spare armour pieces dangling off the character would look pretty stupid. A list of allowed items, and a top-10 by value selection would work well though.

How can they program that when you can have tons of weapons in your inventory?

I like the idea of a pack of some kind. I don't want my alchemist to have his mortar, calcinator, alembic, and retort on his back....

By only allowing the top few by value? Pretty easy filter to apply.

If you read the whole post, even I said that. That's the whole idea of this thread. To think of the pros and cons of the ability.

Simple... you still have your hyperspace inventory, but you can assign weapons/equipment to certain slots that show up on your character.

Word. Thats what Ive always thought too.

It might be cool to get an "over flow loot bag" on your back when your over-encumbered or just carting close to your max capacity.

Mmmmmm. Doesn't sound too good to me. What if the top five are ugly as hell? The idea of having weapons hanging from your back is of an aesthetic nature in the first place -- some of us are quite concerned with how our characters look. The equipment shown would have to be picked by the player. :P

...

Having the hotkeyed items appear on you seems like the simplest solution, but you'll still have an issue when you for instance have more than one claymore....

My jays jaws would literally fall off if you unsheathed stuff from different parts of your body when you pressed the hotkey.... For example your sheath your shortsword, which remains visible at your side, and pull your bow (which has also been visible all the time) from your back. :woot:

edit: little typo there. My jaws will fall off, not my jays.... well, they'll fall too if the jaws fall

well I expect more than one weapon bone being used at a time, dual wielding basically confirms that some thought would have been put into sheathing multiple weapons. . So there is probably several bone attachment nodes for various weapons to be displayed on the character, at the same time.

If I were to speculate at this point I would think at least:
2 bones for single handed weapons< there appears to be something that hangs from both left and right side of the waists of the characters in the GI screen shots.
1 for 2handed weapons< on the back as usual
1 for a shield (or those could be using the same attachment node as the 2handed weapon)< imo on the back again.

whether they can all be filled with a weapon at the same time... no idea.

staff and bows I don't have a good idea for. perhaps the staff/quiver/bow would reuse the ones I listed. Or haver their own. dunno haven't clearly seen a bow yet.

I do get the feeling there is going to be at least 1 extra spot at the waist just for dual wielding weapons.

theres a point when it'll look a bit wrong with a loads of weapons dangling off of your character though.

I agree, I'd have to choose what I would want shown. I wouldn't want something I don't even know I have in my inventory to be hanging from my leg. Oh, and my jays would fall off too. With my jaws.

The game would have to choose the first item in your quick list (or most recently used item) of each type: sideweapon, backweapon, shield, quiver, etc. Some of which would overlap so that backweapons and quivers might be treated equally with only the most recent item from both categories being displayed.

It wouldn't be that difficult to code without being silly. Just a matter of whether you want to give up some extra performance in favour of the looks.

I would definitely like to assign a weapon and shield to my back, a weapon to my hip and maybe a dagger to the side of my lower leg. One thing they never got in fallout was the burdened adventurer type look with a backpack, a rifle slung across the back and a pistol at the hip. Would be awesome.

Don't care as I play from the 1st person perspective so I would see it to appreciate it anyway (sorry!).
