Non-Steam DLC with a Steam version of Oblivion

Post » Thu Dec 09, 2010 3:45 am

My laptop's disk drive just committed suicide today, and I'll have to get a replacement. In the meantime, I can't play (or mod! :o) Oblivion, owning a retail version. However, I was planning on re-purchasing Oblivion through Steam anyway to save myself the bother of having to carry the disk around with me. Before I do buy it though, I'd like to clear up a question I have regarding the usage of DLC with the Steam version.

In addition to Oblivion itself, I have SI, Knights of the Nine and all the DLC but Battlehorn (which I got while it was free, but then lost...). I can't remember if SI was offered as DLC, but I've got it on disc anyhow. I'm already buying a game I already own and I'm not really interested in shelling out even more money for some frankly generally rubbish DLC that I also already own, so I'm going for the non-deluxe GOTY version. That said, will I be able to install the DLC I currently have for a copy of Oblivion bought through Steam?

If not, I'm pretty sure I can just perform manually what the installers do automatically, since the DLC are just official mods, but it would be nice to know either way in advance.

EDIT: Just bought it anyway. :D The question still stands though.

The DLC will work on Steam. The only issue is the Installshield not working for a 64 bit OS.

Which is odd in itself, because I don't have any problems with them on x64 Windows 7, I installed Wizards Tower for some testing a month or two ago. I guess that it's something to do with my own setup though, and I'm not complaining.

Thanks for answering. This can be locked now.

The installers from the retail disk work fine it's the downloaded versions that have the security wrapper that will not install properly on 64 bit Oses due to the wrapper they used. The free version of Battlehorn and the retail DLCs from the KOTN disk do not have that security wrapper so install fine.

That'll be it then: I just grabbed the installers from the KOTN disk and backed them up then put the disk away somewhere, and since then I've just used the installers from my backup. :)
