Noob question - what's used to make the videos

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 5:13 pm

I realize it's a noob question, but what software are you modders using to make the videos that you show at YouTube, etc. Is it something built into the CS? Are you simply video recording the screen and posting that as the video?

The videos can look great and sound great, but I'm dying of curiosity to find out how you'all do it.

Thanks,

John

http://www.fraps.com/ is the most widely used.
And no, it has nothing to do with the CS, or even the game itself. There are various applications that let you record anything happening on your monitor.

Only downside is the price to record full videos.

Of course you could always take a bunch of 30 second videos and splice them together in a video editor :P

I use fraps myself too. On a slightly unrelated note, does anyone know any good software for converting to .bik? Also, any limitations to bik files for Morrowind?

http://www.radgametools.com/bnkmain.htm is what you need for converting to bik. I think you can only go up to 640x480 resolution for vanilla Morrowind to use it. But I'm pretty sure the MCP has an option to allow bigger videos.

I've googled to no avail. Know any free alternatives? Can make good videos, but need to convert to bik. For free :P

Here's the http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm. Should be free, unless they changed something.

A free alternative to fraps for simply recording what is happening on your screen is VirtualDub (forgive me for no link, just search for it). A warning that VirtualDub is very technical (learning curve unless you are a video format expert, btw I am not) and wont run well on low-end systems, and getting compression to work is troublesome so I record uncompressed initially resulting in huge files (i.e. multi-gig for a few minutes of footage) - and poor audio track control, your audio track(s) must be timed pertectly with the video beforehand - for that I use WaveRepair which costs $ but garageband works great and free if you have a mac. Once I have all my segments recorded I put them together with compression with AnyVideoConverter and delete the segments. The advantage to this, although much more work, is full resolution control, full screen aspect control, full frame rate control, and no fraps frame rate red numbers. AnyVideoConverter on the other hand is very easy to use but you lose a lot of visual detail with the best (i.e. most cross-platform compatible) compression schemes - but audio conversion is always perfect.

It's only $37. That's not too expensive at all; about a tank of gas really.

TES, some people don't have $10 dollars extra to spend on a game. How much is too much is completely dependent on a person's situation and saying "only" $30 or "only" $100 is becoming so common that I wonder if people realize how insensitive it is?

Actually that's half a tank for me. Cost me about $60 to fill up my jeep that only gets 16mpg. And when you're an unemployed teenager in a small town with a crappy economy a having a half tank of gas is the equivalent of being a millionaire

Most of my friends have probably never had a full tank in their car unless their parent's bough it. Gas is still well over $3.25 a gallon where I live.

So $37 in gas money > a video recording program that I could probably code if I wanted to.
