Noob questions about mods.

Post » Sat Nov 13, 2010 9:59 pm

Alright, I'm making this thread to avoid having to spam multiple topics across this forum asking nooby questions. I just got a new gaming computer and am currently downloading New Vegas from Steam. I haven't even began to play the game and I've already got questions.

First off, I'd like to know how to change an armor's damage threshold, and how to change any stats that an item has.

That's it for now, but I'll have plenty more questions as I actually begin playing New Vegas.

Thanks guys, and Merry Christmas!

Browse around the GECK until you find the armor you looking for, double clicking should open a pop-up with the armor's statistics.

One suggestion: make at least one playthrough without changing anything first. This'll give you a clearer idea of what you feel needs to be changed.

I've already played through the game multiple times on the 360. I guess I should've clarified more when I said I haven't played it yet. What I meant was, I haven't played it on the PC yet. Thanks for all the help so far guys, it just finished downloading and I'm currently downloading some mods.

I'm really just having trouble downloading these mods in general. I'm currently trying to download FOOK on Windows 7, and each time it's finished downloading, I click the file and it'll bring up a small black window with white writing (Like a command prompt) then it'll just disappear after a split second. Any help?

Download http://www.7-zip.org/ or http://www.rarlab.com/ and use it to extract the files. You should be able to follow FOOK's installation instructions from there.

So I'm trying to get the GECK working, but each time I go to File < Data, then double click FalloutNV.esm, it just closes me out of the data window and does nothing. Man, I wish my modding experience could go right for once.

Okay, this is really confusing. So when I first open the GECK and go to File < Data, double click FalloutNV.esm and hit OK, it brings an error window up entitled: 'Assertion' that says;

Assert

File: C:\projects\fallout3PC\BSmain\MessageHandler.h

Line: 126

Abort - Retry - Ignore

---

If I select 'Retry' it takes me to a warning window that says;

Warning

File FalloutNV.esm is a higher version than this EXE can load.

Context: DEFAULT

"Yes to all" will disable all warnings for this context.

Yes - No - Yes to all

---

I hope you guys can help me. If you have any questions or if you need me to do anything just say so and I will. Sorry for bothering you guys.

I'm really not the one to talk to on this. And it's Christmas, so you might have to wait a bit for an answer.

There are modding tutorials you can find online. Some of the best ones (that I've seen at any rate) were actually for Oblivion, which used a construction set almost identical to the GECK.

I never had the patience for modding, and so appreciate the efforts of those who do. For Oblivion, I decided to expand the basemant of one of my houses, adding and decorating about five rooms and connecting hallways. While it turned out quite well, in my opinion, it took me about a week to finish. While some big mods are created by teams, others as far as I know are created by solo modders (like Verona House Bloodlines and Frostcrag Reborn). I honestly don't know how they do it.

I'm not sure about the assertion failure, but it may be because NV is installed in the "Program Files" directory. Win 7 keeps a tight rein on this directory. Most people say to install to another directory. A program called "Steam Mover" claims to be able move an app to another directory. I'd just reinstall.
If your going to use mods then get "FOMM" to install, uninstall and reorder your mods. Install and start FOMM, click on "package manager", click on "add fomod", navigate to where you downloaded a mod and double click on the file. Highlight the mod and click "activate". Close the package manager window and move the mod to where you want it in your load order.
FNVEdit will help solve mod comflicts and its much simpler and faster, than the GEEK, to make edits. Also the Geek wants you to save your edits to new or existing mod rather than to the NV esm.

Also in FOMM use the Tools to apply archive invalidation so any new textures will show up ingame.

I had a similar problem at first, but figured out what the issue was: it's not windows itself, they originally linked to the wrong download. You need to have the New Vegas version of the GECK, not the Fallout 3 version. You can get the right one http://fallout.gamesas.com/eng/downloads/geck.html

I'm already using the New Vegas Geck. Any other suggestions?

Nevermind, I though I was but I wasn't! Thanks Bane! I finally have all my Fallout Mod problems sorted out thanks to you folks! Have a very, merry rest of Christmas, guys!

The game image is too large and doesn't fit onto my screen. Is there any way to calibrate this?

Fix'd.

Okay, so now that I have the G.E.C.K working, how do I use it? I need to know how to find certain items in it and what not. Currently, I can only fine certain items that I don't know a thing about. Like; GasTrapDummy, or whatever. How do I find actual items like the Varmint Rifle and the 9mm so I can edit them?

On top of my previous issue, I'm having a problem with the extended hud mod. I can't seem to get it to work. I've managed to get the .esp's in my Load Order, but I just can't get the mod working. More help for the noob?

Another question - is there a way to add to your player's DT when they aren't wearing anything? Just like, their base DT?

1. You should be using only one of the esps.
2. Did you edit the XML files as described in the instructions?

Create a perk that adds to their base DT.

1. Open the GECK, click File -> Data. In the window that opens up click FalloutNV.esm and make sure it has an X check mark in front of it. Click OK

2. Wait. Depending on your computer's hardrive speed this could be a very short wait or a few (or more) minutes. This is the GECK loading up all the game data from the master Fallout NV file.

3. In the Object View window (click on the header of the window if you don't see it in focus) you should see short list of 9 items with a + in front of the first 8 of them. Things like + Actors and + World Objects etc.

4. Click the + sign in front of the Items listing. A list will drop down from that spot with more items organized by subcategories.

5. Click once on the word Weapon. A very large list will open up in the right side of the object window. Click once on the Name column, this will alphabetically sort the list by the in-game name of the weapon.

6. Scroll to the very bottom of the list, and 5th from the end of them all you'll see the Varmint Rifle. Double click the listing to open up the properties listing for the rifle.

7. Change whatever you like in here - this will affect ALL varmint rifles in the game. For example, if you want to double the clip size and damage, change the numbers for Clip Rounds in the upper left side of the window from 5 (default) to 10 and the Damage number in the center of the window from 18 (default) to 36. Hit OK, and the window closes.

8. Click File -> Save and name your new mod file Powerful Varmint Rifle (or whatever) and hit ok.

9. Go into the game launcher and enable your new mod file by placing a check mark X in front of it. Play your game and all your Varmint Rifles will have the changed stats.

Hope this has helped you out. If you have more GECK specific questions you should probably ask in that forum.

The thing is, when I click 'Weapon', there isn't a very large list at all. As a matter of fact, there are only two items listed. Those items being; 'Fists' and 'GasTrapDummy'.

I'll re-download the GECK and see if it fixes anything.
