Noob questions

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 1:43 am

I just got morrowind for the pc and have some questions.
What's a good class to use for a first time playthrough?

Since my keyboard doesn't work I have a controller to use but I can't type in my name or get to the menu to exit the game so...
Is there a mod or something of some sort to have a no-named character?
What can I use to exit the game (what button can I replace for it)?

What's a good class to use for a first time playthrough?

In general, most people seem to like starting out as a plain old warrior class. Melee oriented characters are going to be easy to play as, which is good to start. Choose a race suited for melee combat (Redguard, Orc, Nord, etc.) and one of the melee oriented classes (or make one yourself, though if you do, be sure to have at least one weapon and armor skill in your 'major' skills).

As for your other questions: I'm not sure. I've never tried playing the PC version with a gamepad.

Get a new keyboard. Pretty much your only option.

Yes, a fighter is the easiest to start with. Nord with the Lady sign, combat specialty and axe as a major skill is the easiest of all to start.
Here's why: you start with 45 axe skill plus a bonus to heavy and medium armor as well as high enduance and personality (not the most important but it makes dealing with traders a lot easier in the beginning). More, there are a few very good axes available early in the game including probably the best axe in the entire game which you can get by level 2 or 3 ( ask in the hints forum if you want details). For some experienced players this is sometimes considered a cheap build but for a new player it really isn't; if you don't know all the tricks you'll still have plenty of challenge.

As Septiego and Fragonard said I would go with a stock warrior type class for your first time. Once you get the hang of the combat system it will be easier to branch out to other skills. The bigger problem seems to be your keyboard. While some will dissagree I think the keyboard is the best way to play. Even using a joypad you still going to need it for at least a few things (like opening the esc menu and typing your name). I don't know how you typed for this thread but I would prioritize getting your keyboard to work or getting one that will work.

Some folks do better starting with a stealth/thief type of character. They are still pretty handy in combat with short blades and light armor, and of course they are better at stealing things, opening locks, that sort of thing. Just remember not to slowly whomp enemies with a dagger--stab as fast as you can.

But a warrior sort might be better, idk. It's been so long since I was new at it, it's hard to say. I am sure that being a mage is not easy at the start--they aren't good at anything but magic, and aren't very good at that either right off.

but you have to try magic. there are awesome spells in morrowind. I mean its the only game I've played where a mage can actually fly. Flying and throwing fireballs at your helpless enemies, now thats morrowind :P

Hoy-hoy

I chose race Khajiit, because he seemed the most beautiful for me. Well, it's just my opinion.
- I wanted to get through the game with as little fighting as possible. I don't like fighting. Yes, this is also just my opinion.
- And another my opinion. I wanted to be a healer. This did not succeed, but no problem. Now I'm a thief. A good thief. Master thief after about 1000 hours - in game time of course.

I started my first game as a Breton Mage with Warrior birthsign. It was only later, that I realised, this was not the best combination I could do but nevertheless it was a lot of fun playing with that guy.

Well, so why do I say that? You probably already guessed it: Just pick something that appeals to you. Doesn't matter, if it is a mage, thief or warrior type, probably some odd mix. After all, the game is about your choices. Don't see it as something you have to "beat", but as something you play/live.
Ask yourself just one question: What would you like to be? And thats the answer.

That reminds me of an awesome quote someone once said responding to someone telling him he was taking his roleplaying in Oblivion "too seriously" (I think it was in regard to him saying he wasn't going to open any locked containers if he couldn't do it by magic).

He said: "I'm not here to 'beat' the game. I'm here to experience it."

i always start a new game as a thief as you become very rich very soon. after that i try other classes but seldom go with a singleclass warrior - they are too boring most of the times.

I would hate to play the Elder Scroll games as a dumb warrior. That would have poisoned the entire TES series for me.

My suggestion would be to select the option "answer his questions" when you are asked which class you want to play. After a few of these questions, he'll offer you one of the default classes. While the default classes are not very good in my opinion for the long run, the result of the questionnaire should fit your own personality much better than what you'd get for following the broad advice of "just play a warrior because I guess that most newbs like these".

The stock classes are fine for someone who doesn't know the system, but after you've played for a while, a custom class allows you far more flexibility to play the type of character you actually want. Just keep in mind that your first character is a "learning experience"; I deleted mine after about 5-10 hours and restarted. My second character, built with at least some knowledge of what I wanted and could do within the limitations of the game, eventually completed the MQ.

If you don't mind playing a basic warrior character, it's certainly the easiest approach to learn the game. Stealth is probably about in the middle, where you can often avoid a lot of those fights which you're not able to handle, or give yourself enough advantages to win them anyway. A magicka centered character can be a long, hard road if you don't know a few of the intricacies behind the various skills and spells, or how to get around resistant enemies, and various other challenges, because the other skills and attributes generally suffer heavily in building the character.

You could also do a hybrid between two of the above, which I find can be very effective and enjoyable. I avoid the "jack of all trades" approach of making a character who does all three, not because it doesn't work well, but because it works TOO well, and the game gets really boring by Level 20.

That's exactly my approach to the game. I'm glad you understand it. :foodndrink:

Everyone has his favorite idea of a character I think, personally when I play a new Elderscrolls game my first character is nearly always like the following. A Female breton who uses the heaviest armor possible, maces, shields and casts restoration and alteration spells alongside a bit of destruction spells. Basically I go for as much durability as possible, A ton of armor with magical defences and a healing spell running, not to mention magical defences as a breton and the race ability shield, I go either for the mage or the attronach depending on what I feel like trying, I went for mage for first time I plaid in both Morrowind and Oblivion but I′ve plaid through Oblivion another time with the same kind of character with the Atronach birthsign.

I don′t care about my ability to sneak, I waltz right through things if possible, and I don′t care about my damage, my hits can feel like a kittens paw to that Daedra I′m fighting, just as long as his hits feel the same to me :P You could say since I get armor with reflect damage that I′m like a rock that heals itself but can′t do much damage just rolling slowly bumping against your shoe but if you hit it you will hurt your hand.

I know you asked what would be good for a first time playthrough but thing is if you like your character it will get strong no matter how you make it, heck even a merchant character can be strong, you could have him barter all day long, and then use his riches to buy scrolls(intentionally plural) and potions, and if I′ve learned anything about blasting enemies with scrolls & chugging down potions then it′s that it′s pretty decent.

So, what do you care about and what do you want ? Think about it, try it, and make it good :D

Edit: Changed the word "staff" to "scroll" to fit the morrowind section better but you get what I mean.
