NOOOO!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110319/ap_on_re_eu/eu_germany_knut_death, who rose to stardom when he was hand-raised by zoo keepers after being rejected by his mother rejected at birth, died on Saturday, a zoo official said.

This is sad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QaWWBTRSc3s&feature=related

That's awful. I remember watching a documentary about him last year, and just being overwhelmed by it. I'm genuinely gutted about a bear I've never met. That's an odd feeling.

I cant believe the internet is so ridiculously sad about the death of a single polar bear in a German Zoo while there currently are so many disasters, civil wars, genocides and a giant nuclear emergency going on right now!

Well, you know what they say: the death of one is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic.

If it were otherwise, we'd all be sad all the time; and being sad has never helped anyone, that I know of.

But I hadn't even heard of the bear until I read the linked article. It was just cute-looking.

I remember hearing about it a few years ago. Sorry to hear the bear passed away. Does anybody have any idea if there are any little Knut's running around?

hmm.... a polar bear raised by humans. There is your cause of death. Polar bears are not meant to be raised by humans. They are supposed to be raised by their mothers. I know he didn't have a mother, but that was most likely why he died. Poor guy.... That is rather sad.

:(

@barrettsfloyd: I doubt it. Male polar bears generally reach mating age around the age of six (or so my goggle fu tells me).

Well, that svcks even more. After thinking about it some, we most likely would've heard about it if Knut had managed to mate with another.

Agreed except for the nuclear thing.

This. It's a [censored] polar bear, people. ONE polar bear. I assure you, several of them die every single day.

EDIT: Not trying to say this isn't sad, I love animals. But the melodrama for things like this from the media is just plain pathetic.

Talked to a friend working the the zoo today. Might have been suicide. Yes, some animals are smart enough to do that. Mobbing kills, and not only people.

Ahhh and he died very young too.... :(

We had twin polar bear cubs that were rejected by their mother too, IIRC. Successfully raised by zoo keepers and such. Was a great story too.

Hmmm, yeah, I know it's just a polar bear, but some of you can maybe be a little less uptight about some comments and others of you could be a little less insensitive about the issue. mkay?

So what you cant be sad because there is worse in the world ? Bad reason.

I dont actualy care about the bear dying, happens all the time in the wild.
