nord caste systems and slavery

Er, if you're basing this off of the Hindu caste system, none of the castes are really (or were originally at least) considered better than any of the others... Like the Brahmin aren't supposed to be considered any better than the Huiti, it's just that the Brahmin are the closest to the end of the reincarnation cycle.


no im not basing this off of the Hindu caste system. at all.

i just want a more divided world similar to morrowind, but with more brutality. all the info from GI seems to be pointing in that direction.

i don't want a totally bright and cheery oblivion style game, and the info points to a darker game.

i am not saying that slaves should be everywhere or in most places, but i want there to be clans that enslave bosmer or others and to personally have the ability to free them.

i don't want to be able to enslave anyone like in fallout, unless that feature wouldn't take time away from developing other parts of the game.


bring on skaal villages, drunken tavern halls, raging warbands enslaving and slaughtering the weak, a weakened/fighting kingship/councilship, a village of wise greybeards, huge mountains, a variety of architecture, landmasses, and cultures, and rampaging dragons and you will see how a game is supposed to be.

add in imperial guards, high ranking nobility, everyone abiding by imperial law, copy and pasted towns and areas (6 months dev. time) and see how much enjoyment and immersion the game loses.

Please no caste. It is degrading and something that belongs to the previous century. I do not believe it is appropriate in a game either.
And as for slaves, only if I am able to kill the master and get fame for it.


The same goes for sword warfare but that is still in the game....

I'm not looking for that, in fact I do not regard 21st century western world as that great or superior. I just find the caste system appalling and would rather not have that in the game. There are other aspect to give depth and force you to make choices.

There are other ways of enjoying yourself beyond playing videogames. The beauty of a virtual interactive medium is that it grants you the power to have experiences which you would not normally have.

Most people that support slavery etc in games don't find slavery less appalling than you do, but in games they might have fun doing things which they don't usually do because of moral compunctions.

I don't see outright slavery, but I can see regional kings or rulers with a land full of serfs. It is arguable that serfs were, more or less, slaves - but there distinctions. Serfs could own property, for example.

However, most of the Nords in TES lore seem to be more about honor and skill as warriors, not plantation running. Slavery really only makes sense if you have a need for large amounts of unpaid, low-skill labor. For small subsistence farms, a slave is probably more trouble that he or she is worth - and that is the kind of farming you would most likely find in a place like Skyrim. The the warrior, a slave might be useful as a go-fer or sword caddy, but again, how honorable would that be? About the only place I could imagine slavery is with vampires, who need to keep cattle around. Other than that, I just don't see it being a big issue.

What would be most realistic would be Nord warriors turned regional ruler in their old age, with a group of servants running their houses, and serfs running their fields. This results in a three tier system: royalty, warrior, servant - with the unofficial fourth tier being criminals and other low-lifes.

I remember finding some Russian/Eastern European influence in some of Skyrim's lore in the past as well. So, in addition to Vikings, we also might get Cossacks!


If I had control of the series, I would take the Viking-inspired Nords and mix them with an enormous dose of Caucasian mountaineers.

I think that a Commune would be cool, much like in the real ancient Norse culture. Everybody is pretty much the same except for outcasts. This is also because I would mostly like to see some sort of little community of outcasts that you could befriend or something. Outcasts are always interesting. No slavery though, that would be lame.

with the imperial legion and town guards in the newer info, it seems that the caste system in this game will be similar to oblivion, except with more outcasts and hunters. hopefully town guards will become house guards like in morrowind as you edge deeper into skyrim, but I highly doubt it.

i am guessing slavery is out, but "prisoners" are in. Meh, it's the same thing to me, as long as some towns have chains of "prisoners."

Thats like saying prostitution, violence, and famine are from another century, plenty of people still have slaves, the fact that its not legal doesn't mean its nonexistent. Its actually pretty prominent in the upper classes of the Middle East. The only difference is that its not based on ethnic group (slavery never has been, its merely on who is the easiest game at the time) but based on lineage.

Real life is much more horrible than fiction.

Well, before all the african enslavement thing, Slavery was not considered "bad", actually, it was better than being in prison or worse, being executed. Slaves were a lot like what you consider a servant but those "servants" weren't freemen. Yes, Slavery should be in.
I would really like to see some kind of "Ting" in Skyrim.
