Lol. I'm Norse, and have blue eyes, dark brown hair. We're not all blonde, you know. I hate that stereotype.

Well, I'm from Denmark and blond with blue eyes, so there! =)

I like them.

They look like proper vikings. The Nordic women are the sixiest of the bunch. I'll probably use one as my 4th character. (After Altmer, Bosmer, and Orc).

I am too but blue eyed and a lighter shade of brown. We don't all have to be blonde haired to be Nordic xD

How to play as a viking:

-No double sided battle axes. Vikings didnt use them. No one actually used them for combat. Vikings primarly used axes and swords, twohanded and onehanded, some berserkers dual wielded, some huscarls used shields.
-You dont wear heavy armor. Chainmail and leather are the vikings best friends.
-You have a beard. If you dont have a beard, call yourself 'baby knight of harmless' or something, but not viking.
-You dont have black hair, dark brown eyes or green eyes. You also dont have dreadlocks or mohawk.
-You are not 'good' or 'evil', you are neutral. You dislike that village with the cowards? Pillage and [censored]. You like that guy who lost his daughter? Help him.
-Magic is for cowards, staffs are okay
-you are a strong, beatiful norse viking and you dont need no girl
-Honor. You dont steal things from people you are friends with, you dont do stealth stuff like a coward, you always fight fair (punching people in the face is fair, running away and drinking potions is not)

I know its TES and not real life, but I just find it fun to play as a viking or legionary soldier like he was in real life (okay maybe a bit tweaked).

You forgot to mention that Vikings used spears a lot to, though not many people know that. It was because it was easy to make, but still effective. And as stated before, there werent just "some huscarls" that used shields, there were many that did, not only huscarls, though they often could afford larger and better shieds. Also, Berserkers were the ones who ate mushroom before they enterd battle, to get a high. This was called Berserkergang, and thats what made them so fearless, and feared by their enemies. And yes, they commonly used 2h weapons. Huscarls were also the most common to use the chainmail, as a huscarls is a more wealthier viking, than the common ones. Huscarls were also commonly seen side by side with a king, chieftain or someone of a high rank, and served as a bodyguard.
Vikings shouldn't just be asociated with plundering and pillaging, even though they did that a lot too. They were great explorers and traders too, even though thats not what most people connect vikings with.

ut ofc, you are right in what your saying, just wanted to get as much facts on the table as possible ^^

PS: For those people who thinks all vikings wandered around in horned helmets... They didnt. That is just a myth, or a fiction, and not true. The most commonly used helmets were off the nastral helmet type. A helmet that coverd ones head and possibbly neck, with a nose guard.

The common mushroom in those stories is flugsvamp (/Amanita?), which could actually have an opposite, enfeebling effect. I'm not convinced that they didn't simply psych themselves up. The shroom thing isn't from contemporary sources, anyway.

They most likely ate the Amanita Muscaria. It made them hallucinate, makeing them able to see things like trolls and other mythycall creatures. Also in high doses, it would give them an enormous amount of energy, and also making them very aggressive.

You would only get a calming, zen-like effect from small doses of the Amanita Muscaria. And i dont believe that they only ate like 5 grams. They most likely ate much more.
Combining this, with their faith, and believing they would come to Valhall, is what made them so fierce and violent.

Berserkergang wasn't aquired through simply psych themself up, even though that would be requried aswell.

Berserkers eating mushrooms is also a myth, as PLA said, those mushrooms just makes you lazy or at worst kills you.

Anyway, Nord will definately be my main in skyrim. It'll be a mage, don't care about racial traits and such. Nor do i care about that nords are a warrior-race, or that in the viking society magic was viewed as a very feminine thing and male practitioners was looked down upon

(Even though there is no solid proof that they ate Amanita Muscaria before going into battle, or plundring, but nor is it proof that all they did was to psych themself up. As said, i believe it was a mix between the two.)

Sorry fot that multi comment. But as i said, if you ate the Amanita Muscaria in high doses it would make you very energic and aggressive. Oposed to giving you a calm and zen-like effect, when eating in small doses.

Anyways, my main in Skyrim will also be a Nord. Probably a mix between a ranger and a warrior.

Well, regardless of the effect, there is no historical evidence of this so I highly doubt it.

Yeah, i know, there is no solid evidence to back this upp. But i still, personally, believe that it would be a mix of psych your self up, and eating the shrooms. There is no evidence of them only pysching themself up either, without shrooms. And i find it hard to believe that they would become so firece, and violent without any form of drugs (the shrooms).

Anyways, i think that Nords should actually have a type off Berserk ability too. It suprised me a bit the first time i played a TES game, and saw Redguards having Adrenalin rush, and Orcs having Berserk, but no such ability for Nords.

I went a bit like this :brokencomputer: when i saw that

Um, I can use a double-sided ax if I want. I'm a viking.
A beard isn't as socially applicable in modern America unless it's absolutely beastly. Gimme just a few more years.
Perhaps.... I tend to stick to my morals.
Don't call me beautiful. And I wantz gurl.... Lol.
BS. Stealth gives me the advantage of surprise, therefore the upper hand. That advantage also makes me more effecient. Besides, I'm a viking and can do what I want.

All (mostly) true. I dislike chainmail. It's rather cumbersome.

(from previous thread)

Commandant Oreo: "What's wrong with Woad? That was a pretty decent ability. "

Yeah, but not really suitable for a race who primarily are warriors. It is too spell-like. As is Nord Frost.

They really need something similar to Berserk and Adrenaline Rush.

To repeat what I said in the previous thread;

Give 'em Nord Rage! :celebration:

Especially because they invented the concept of berzerkers.. It should have been a nordic quality, and would have made it extremely hard to be knocked down... your lost health would wait until the spell was over to take effect, all during the spell every hit you deliver gives you more health and more fatigue. Also, all blocks would knock down and all strikes would take no more than 2 strikes to kill. lol

the animation would change to a rabid man chewing on his sheild and spitting the wood at people.

Perhaps less health taken, and more fatigue added, but certainly not a gain. That is unncanny.

And lol.

My first character will definitely be a Nord. Am from Norway myself, with the whole blue eyes / blond hair viking thing going on, and conveniently I have a name which is fairly suitable for a Nord character as well. I was considering re-creating Eric from True Blood (1000 year old vampire viking) but figured I'd rather try and make myself. Though less exciting, it should help with the immersion. I'm happy they fixed the faces so the Nords don't look like someone smashed their faces in with a sledgehammer, widening their heads in the process.

Very much looking forward to Skyrim now, and reading this thread helped even further. Some great ideas here. Will probably play my usual hybrid plate-wearing, sword-wielding maniac with spells for support. Tried to make spellcasters in Oblivion several times, but somehow I always ended up with sword in hand and a crazed bloodlust. Looks like the magic system in Skyrim will actually be worth looking at though, albeit at the lack of a spell creator.
