Nordic view on Bretons?

Post » Sun Jul 10, 2011 6:54 am

Where can i find info on this?

Nordic god:
Herma-Mora
(The Woodland Man)
"Ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer" <--- A Breton reference?

We don't have much info on that particular legend.

And we don't know the Nordic view on them yet. After they figured out the Bretons were humans (after killing a few), the Nordic Empire did try to liberate them, only to encounter resistance from both the Mer and the Bretons.

Nordic god:
Herma-Mora
(The Woodland Man)
"Ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer" <--- A Breton reference?

"Hermaeus Mora is the Daedric prince whose sphere is the scrying of the tides of Fate, of the past and future as read in the stars and heavens, and in whose dominion are the treasures of knowledge and memory.[1] His name is also spelled Hoermius Mora, Hormaius Mora, or Herma-Mora.[2] Also called the Demon of Knowledge, he is vaguely related to the cult origins of the Morag Tong if only by association with his sibling, Mephala.[3] Unlike most Princes, Hermaeus Mora does not take on a humanoid form at all, living instead as a grotesque green mass of tentacles and claws.

Apocrypha is Hermaeus Mora's plane of Oblivion, an endless library where all forbidden knowledge can be found. The books all have black covers with no titles, and the library is haunted by ghosts forever searching for knowledge.[4]

Herma-Mora was an ancient Atmoran demon who, at one time, nearly seduced the Nords into becoming Aldmer.[3] In Nedic Myth he is known as the "Woodland Man" who catches villagers lost in the woods; the secondary set of his name, Mora, is one word for "wood", "woodland" or "tree(s)" in Elvish.[3] Most Ysgrimnoor myths are about escaping the wiles of old Herma-Mora.[3]

His enemies are Ebonarm and Vaermina and his summoning day is 5th First Seed. The Hero of Daggerfall quested for the Oghma Infinium by summoning Hermaeus Mora.

Hermaeus Mora's shrine in Cyrodiil is located deep within the mighty Jerall Mountains, where he is said to speak only to the most worthy of mortals in a deep, frightening and almost convoluted way. He once asked the Champion of Cyrodiil to bring one soul of each race to him so his followers could use them in rituals to explore the realms of reality as well as space and time, once again offering the Oghma Infinium as a reward."

I'm pretty sure certain aspects of racial distinction aren't known by most.

Most don't know that Orcs or Khajiit are infact Mer
Most don't know that Redguards are compeltely different from the other man races
Most don't know that Bretons are the offspring of man and mer.

Only scholars who have written the books where we've gained our knowledge would have any kind of insight. And scholars aren't generally the type to care about such silly things, as they know that there is probably no "pure" man or mer in the world.

This is all my own speculation, of course, and it is probably best suited for the lore forum.

Feelings solely due to race should be present but not for all members of a race. Racism and hate over things that happened generations past are marks of uncivilized thought and immaturity. I could see some racism and such, since people aren't always logical beings, but something so far in the past should be reserved only for the worst of racists.

Yes and they interbreeded with the Aldmer, who were ancestors of Dwemer, Dunmer, Orsimer, Chimer, Bosmer, Ayelid and Altmer

I think the term Aldmer needs to cleared up since it is also used as a term to decribe the "elven" races as a whole, not just their ancestors.

But I love rereading all this lore about Bretons since they are my favorite race.

EDIT: Although its not totally clear how the Bretons became like they are now. Usually when races mix the offspring takes the mothers race, but it can be assumed that if mixing continues for long enough, like with the Bretons, that the line become more blurred, and a true mix occurs.
It took centuries of closed population breeding.

Anywho, the nords thought the bretons were mer, when they first met them. As for nowadays, I can see the nords seeing them as being effeminate, but I doubt hatred. Also, don't take land grabs as hatred; it's the nordic way to fight!

And as a quick lesson on nord hatred towards mer, and vice versa, it's the continuing war between Shor/Lorkhan and Alduin/Auriel. Mer believe that Mundus is a prison, and Lorkhan was a complete and utter dike. The nords believe Mundus was Shor's divine mercy, and he's trying to help mortals become greater (and as a side note, Vivec agrees with this view of Shor, going as far to say he's trying to bring everyone CHIM it up). In addition, the mer believe Auriel is their savior and liberator, while the nords see Alduin as nothing more than an insane devourer.

Actually I was making a reference to the many naked barbarian quests in morrowind, where nord men were tricked by breton witches

Wait... wait the cat folks are elves?

Not exactly, but their ancestors were elves. Their connection to the Lunar Lattice and a potential connection with Azura is what makes them what they are.

They were elves, during the time when everyone's form was extremely wonkey and Yff're hadn't stabilized the life forms Mundus, yet. Azura stabilized the khajiit's form by binding it to the lunar lattice, which is why the khajiit also birth different sizes and forms of the khajiit, depending on the moons waxing and waning forms.

Damn, Hellmouth beat me to it.

Anyways, there is some historical tension between the two races.
The Bretons are said to have originated from the prisoners and survivors who interbred with the Aldmer after Saarthal was burned, and so their link with the elves was bound to draw the Nords' derision.

I think we havnt seen the nord hate on bretons because the provinces we were in didnt include the Nords... Morrowind=Dwemer/Dunmer Cyrodill=Melting Pot Skyrim= Nords... The province of Cyrodill is full of many races and very little racism... The only racist I met was the Countess of one of the cities(I am thinking Layawin)... That would be a very realistic reason we didnt see hate IMO...

Fine, basically, I'd say the nords view them as sissy men or metrosixuals, not cavemen, like your picture was before you edited it.

Mhm. Too lazy to go actually look it up, but I believe Azura gave them thier lunar phases. Some were led away by some other god and were turned into Bosmer.

I just wonder, shouldn't the Dunmer totally hate the Argonians? Stupid lizards took my favorite races' land after all. I mean like a 30 point minus in disposition. And the Nords should like only respect the man races, the redguards and the orcs maybe. Stupid mer only got them trouble after all.
