Is it normal for oblivion to be using 1,500,000K of memory?

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 8:44 pm

So things are pretty stable for me with my LO and I get a CTD every half hour or hour. Which is pretty darn goos in my experience when having over 200 mods. It seems to Crash due to memory usage. But I'm not sure. I use the 4 gb patch to utilize more of my ram. But I've been noticing that oblivion can sometimes be using around 1,500,000K of memory! Is that a normal thing for using so many mods? I'm just curious. If I wanted to wittle down the memory demands then what mods would you target first to do it in my LO? thanks for reading everyone. and for any advice!

That is normal for a game that is heavily modded, and I suppose the vanilla game would reach that point if it were played long enough. Hitting the memory limit (typically projected to be around 1.8GB) within an hour is kind of bad though...

Edit: Posting your load order would be helpful. If you are using a 32-bit OS, do not use the LAA patch. That's may advice on the matter, anyway...

How many mods are you actually using? What is the size of your data folder? Try a clean boot - http://www.ehow.com/how_5331553_clean-boot-windows.html

Should I get rid of the Realisticmagicforcehigh.esp as well?

I'm using 210 mods.

My data folder is 25.4 gigs and has 339 items in it. 22 being folders.

thanks for taking a gander!

The size and number are nothing crazy. Try the clean boot. Although, I would only expect it to allow Oblivion to use a little more memory. I do not know about the magic plugin causing issues, but some users have had the force plugin kill their FPS. The might only have been due to a mod conflict, but I could not tell... I also use those plugins, so I will certainly test my own setup when I start rebuilding it.

I don't know about that, but I do know that you should edit si.ini in Streamline 3.1 mod because there is a setting "set SLv.WeatherUnsticker to 1" and change that to "set SLv.WeatherUnsticker to 0" just edit it in notepad.
You can always undo the value ingame through the Ctrl+F12 command to bring up the Streamline menu I think.

I also suggest that you replace this "5D Cyrodiil transportation network 1.3 WZ.esp" and use Arthmoor's http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/942911-relz-cyrodiil-travel-services/ mod instead.

++ Mart's Monster Mod - More Passive Wildlife.esp [Version 3.7b3p3]

5A T.I.E4MODS.esp [Version 0.41]

C6 StarX Vanilla Vampires Revised.esp
C7 StarX VVR_OOO Patch.esp

Remove MMM More Passive Wildlife, buggy with UFCOM, fixed in next version.

Remove TIE4MODS has that is highly out of date with MMM and FCOM. You will have to wait for TIE4MODS Reborn, Once OOO/MMM/FCOM are released it will follow..

There is an updated SVVR with FCOM Patch now.

Perfectly normal. Maybe even a bit light.

Now for some hard truth:

You're pushing. The game is not designed to function with as much as you're asking. 210+ mods on a 32bit system just doesn't play nice, period. Insisting on trying to keep this up will result in an ever growing sense of frustration and anger as you grow ever more disgusted with crashing into the memory limit.

Want this to end? It's time to bite the bullet, get Windows 7 64-bit, and another 4GB of memory. Then apply the LAA patch and go from there.

Huh... that ain't kosher. The mod contains one GMST edit, nothing else. No scripts. No other mod that I've seen edits the same GMST.

Could be a bug with that game setting, of course. A very odd one if so... worth testing, definitely.

Thanks for checking. That cuts down on my work a bit. My FPS have seemed to be pretty much as expected, so I never though to look at that plugin.

@richardrocket009 254 mods? wow, how well is that going for you? crashing every 10mins? :P

@Arthmoor: I'm sure people can't just go out and buy a new os plus some ram sticks for one game, maybe his specs aren't even that great, so maybe even buy a new comp? :S Although I do agree, @OP, 200+ mods ain't good..not on that system (like Tomlong suggests the 4gb patch is not recommended for 32bit OS since they are only supposed to support up to 2gb, more ram = useless), whats your specs? 1.5gb ram usage isn't much, unless thats the amount your game uses instantly when you run it....

Tbh 30mins-1hour of gameplay per crash isn't exactly what I call stable, in fact it's quite unstable, but that's just my opinion anyway, I personally perfer at least 2 hours per crash... I guess it's quite addictive to just add mods constantly, but you gotta make a choice sooner or later, ie right now you could probably drop 50 of those esps to make the game function just a little better. And just so you know, I'm on a beast comp with 64bit win7 and running just over 200 mods, barely stable for me at the moment.

PS: Something else to consider, I highly doubt your crashes are all due to mem usage, with 210+ mods on that system just about anything could happen anytime and there probably isn't a way to fix anything that actually happens, you're simply using too many mods.

If you are using a 32-bit OS, do not use the LAA patch. That's may advice on the matter, anyway...

Shouldn't matter. Whether /LARGEADDRESSAWARE is set or not, any process on 32 bit windows is hard capped to 2GB of address space, unless the /3GB switch is set in boot.ini (it shouldn't be).

I am still on a 32-bit OS, and I have run over 200 mods just fine, FCOM expanded and all. (Now, I have to get to rebuilding my LO.) I am looking forward to 64-bit, however. 30min - 1hour is definitely not stable...

(I wish that 3-Day SELECT, going on fourth day shipment from Newegg would arrive today. This is so stressful. :( I pulled two of my towers downstairs, getting ready for the building session, and all I have is the case, the CPU fan and the monitor...)

Yes, this is definitely the next step. However I just upgraded from a dual core 1.8 ghz 4300 to a quad core 2.83 ghz. So I need to wait a bit till my next upgrade. I don't have a problem with the occasional CTD....It's a small price to pay for using so many fantastic mods at once. But your suggestion would be how much of an improvement? I don't know at all. Thanks for making it, and I'll keep it in mind.

So I've removed the forcemedium mod for obvious reasons and upgraded the starx fcom patch as well. Thanks for those tips! Next load up I'll be removing cyrodill transportation network and then replacing it with the one recommended above.

I LOVE the amount of help and knowledge you guys provide on here....after all these years it still blows my mind. Cheers to you all! :foodndrink:

I've now also removed MMM more passive wildlife. thanks for that.

I won't be removing TIE4MODS though, it's just too crucial for what I consider an ideal oblivion game. Plus it looks like the new version is still a long ways away. Been waiting a loooong time and watching the thread like a hungry hippo.

Just to clarify what I understand, it's fine to remove or add a mod one at a time per loadup correct? then saving the game. That's always been my understanding, based on the 50 steps to a stable fcom thread that I use religiously to build my game.

I'll post my dxdiag on here since my specs are being discussed as well. thanks again for all your help everyone. I hope others can get tips from this stuff to....it's golden.

I won't be removing TIE4MODS though, it's just too crucial for what I consider an ideal oblivion game.

Obviously it's up to yourself, but you WILL hit conflicts when used with FCOM.
The current version is certainly not recommended by the FCOM team.

Yeah, once the new version is out I'll be upgrading. I just feel that Oblivion is naked without it....so to speak.

Its presence is not helping the game's memory usage rate...
