North Korea bombed South Korea just now

Don't think for a second those Marine deaths will go unanswered for...

46 Sailor deaths and a sinking of a ship has been unanswered by SK, in terms of military force. I firmly believe that nothing will come of this, besides more back water diplomacy and slaps on the wrist for NK. It will not come down to a conventional war. NK has no one to truly back them, for China is not suicidal. If NK does keep pushing, and some sort of escalating conflict does arise, China would be completely idiotic to back NK. It would then be NK and China versus a vast majority of the rest of the world, which would never happen.

But I doubt it would happen again.

I really don't think it would ever happen. If NK were to persist with their aggression, and then China announces that they fully back the NK, who else would possibly come to their support? No one, IMO.

Besides the little dictators (Ahmadinejad, Chavez), and possibly Russia, I agree.

I believe nothing will come of it. But North Korea's definitely pushing it.

Nothing big will happen, if war actually started it would be short since NK has no allies like everyone has stated already.

South Korea is a huge global player. Any war there is going to have severe economic ramifications to all the world markets.

Economic downturns are already happening. Which is worrisome, because in good economic times, multinational corporations don't like business being interrupted.
When enough economic loss occurs to make fighting over territory which has resources those corporations desire, the conflict will escalate further. Eventually to the point of all out war. Wars aren't fought over ideology, ideology is the excuse. Wars are fought for expansion of territory.

Unlikely as pretty much all of the major nations are condemning the attacks and calling for North and South Korea to work out the situation diplomatically (including China)

IF (and that's a highly unlikely if) the conflict did escalate into a global conflict I highly doubt that China would back North Korea at this stage. Given their economic and industrial goals it's likely that if the global community were to unite against North Korea then China would probably follow suit (it's not good business to be at war with the person you're selling your goods to). Though whose to say that China has to ally itself with anyone? China is in a position that they could be militarily independent thanks to their booming economy and industrial complex and could likely push towards annexing North Korea.

Given the http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2010/09/16/its_about_time_we_got_start that have been recently signed between the US and Russia (limiting nuclear weapons) it's likely that Russia and US would be on similar sides though probably more like a uneasy alliance such as during WWII.

Probably SK. NK would cost them far too much. As I said earlier, China is putting 110% into growth, and need their imports, and also get a lot of money from their exports. Russia is currently using resource exports to get its economy back on track. While they could each survive losing the bulk of their imports/exports, they definitely wouldn't prosper from it.

I don't think another World War will ever happen. Barring some unseen happenstances like Germany conquering half of Europe again, it's pretty much an improbability. The major superpowers are too intertwined economically for such a thing to even be feasible, I feel.

Although the above can't be said for when the Earth's resources are seriously beginning to dwindle, for anything could happen then.

Don't we have troops in SK? I think it'd be quite hard to not get involved, plus, we have a tendency to stick our noses into other people business. Hopefully we don't have another Cold War on our hands.

Edit: Just read the rest of the article. This isn't good.

This kind of thing has happened before. There will be some diplomatic posturing, some heavy handed threats, intimidation, then the free world will side with South Korea, China will tell North Korea to back down, the UN will condemn North Korean aggression, and things will cool back down.

Hopefully.

China is stuck between old and new, its old relationship (still secret and closely guarded) with its old ally and its new relationship as a responsible global economic and military superpower. It's caught in a dangerous game for its own citizens, like um me. My instinct this is all part of an all change power struggle at home, but these hermits have big rocks to throw.

I suspect a continuation of the Korean War beginning sometime next year.

If America does become involved with this, then North Korea is doomed.Once the armistice is dissolved and the conflict resumed, there's absolutely nothing keeping nations like America, the United Kingdom, Japan, and the rest of Western Europe from launching a full-scale attack on North Korea. Despite the fact that North Korea has quite an impressive army, it truly is doubtful that North Korea could pose much of a threat to a united military force.

Although it is true that a war is not expedient to the recession, the long-term economic benefits of a defeated North Korea and and a united Korea most certainly are beneficial.

What China fears most, is the refugees swarming the border should a war broke out. If either the States or NK decided to smuggle in infiltration task force through that breach, wth are we gonna do?
