North Korea bombed South Korea just now

Post » Thu Nov 18, 2010 12:27 am

I don't think much will come of this, although I may be wrong. NK sunk a sub and nothing happened over that. It's just them blowing off steam and making some sort of statement.

Exactly. They're cornered, but what if they have nukes? Having few allies makes them even more dangerous.

They do have nukes. They tested some when my brother was stationed in South Korea. I highly doubt this will cause WWIII... Even if they did try to threaten the world with nukes, I'm sure there are more a few countries keeping on close eye on them.

My cousin is stationed over there <_<. Though, i doubt much will come from this since the south wants to have "peace" for long as possible but i fail to see anything but war. But in other news, Bethesda acknowledges http://kotaku.com/5697047/report-elder-scrolls-v-is-a-direct-sequel-to-oblivion!

It is a new deterioration in the countries relationship, as this attack is the first to involve civilians, which stands it out from the Submarine attack, which happened in the same area; due to disputed islands and boundary lines.

South Korea appears to be doing all it can to prevent a war, but it can only take so much. If a war did happen then North Korea would lose, there are countries already levying trade sanctions against them. I doubt China would be insane enough to enter into the war per se, but they could always offer support to North Korea in the way of aid, and even parts of their military may be used by North Korea.

Huh?

Expand on that.

South Korea and the US have a defense pact. If it escalates into a serious conflict, then we're obliged to assist the South Koreans. Personally, I just think this is KJI looking for attention, as usual. When we spend our time concerned with the goings on in the mid east, he gets lonely, and has only his own people to stroke his ego. So he pulls little stunts like testing nukes, sinking ships, and so on, hoping to get more money and aid, with the promise of behaving himself. Which he always breaks. Nothing new there.

Whilst it was a general discussion there were no problems, but now with links to articles that raise politics we may have to call it a day.

I hope it ends up a just sabre rattling - but no more politics.

Personally it has me worried this will be an Adolf Hitler situation, IE: North Korea will keep pushing until they find out where the danger limit is so they can find out just how much they can get away with. I kind of feel North Korea is TRYING to instigate warfare. It makes me so heavy hearted that no matter where you go, folks just never leave each other alone.

The only thing they might have are Nukes, which are probably very ineffective.

Ineffective or not, they still make a perty big hole in the ground

They have what 2 ? If they use just one, I garuntee that N korea wil be glowing in the dark when everyone is finished, and China wont help them.
Unless jun il is more bat[censored] insane than I thought I doubt he wants to have his entire family and all of his country destroyed. And if he dose well we wont be hearing about war in Korea for some time.

Besides we have thing to protect agains nukes you know, I dont know how they work, but 2 nukes wont be much of an issue.

There wont be war. It's apparently just a South military drill that was too close to the border and made NK over-react.

After 60 years of semi-conflict, it's the kind of thing that should get sorted out soon by the armies of diplomats on both sides. Probably with an international investigation on the incident.

One thing's for sure trough, the two Koreas realy need to stop pointing guns at one another, because if it continues one day it might escalate in a pointless and deadly war.

Korean war part 2?

The Korean conflict technically never ended, there was a truce, but no official ending to the conflict.

I have a cousin who was in the Navy back during the first 00s incident involving nuclear weapons. He won't divulge what happened when he was down there. Anyway, while I'm pretty sure this incident will turn inro nothing just like the others, these events are rather disconcerting.

The "Beloved Leader's" son is taking up leadership of North Korea, maybe this was an announcement "The man in charge will change, but you still can't [censored] with us!".

Don't worry about North Korea and nukes. The two Nuclear tests they did were complete failures. They were less than .1 of a kilaton. IMHO I don't think they are nuclear capable.

Friend of mine just informed me North Korea has, since I posted earlier, now fired missles across the border. Also SK is considering an actual counter attack on NK's missle base. This is almost definitely the worst exchange of fire in 60 years

I don't know why people are focusing on Nuclear weapons, it is suspected that they do have the capability to produce nuclear power, perhaps not by people on forums but by the director of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Obviously it is a secretive process but a seismic shift in 2009 is purported to be the testing of a nuclear weapon.

'Russian defence experts estimated the explosion's yield at between 10 and 20 kilotons, many times more than the 1 kiloton measured in its first nuclear test in 2006 and about as powerful as the bombs the US used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of the second world war.' http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/may/25/north-korea-hiroshima-nuclear-test

"Kim Jong-il is sick, isolated and in the midst of one of the most risky ventures of his life – handing over power to his untested, 27-year-old son. He has few cards in his hand, but this week he played two of them. And, in the twisted logic of Pyongyang poker, they were both aces.

The first was to reveal to the world what Siegfried Hecker, a visiting US nuclear scientist, described as “an astonishingly modern” uranium enrichment facility with at least 1,000 centrifuges. Washington had long suspected Mr Kim had such a facility, but no proof. Imagine its surprise to discover that it was right under its nose. The sparkling centrifuges were close by a disabled plutonium reactor at Yongbyon, a site intensely monitored by US satellites. Victor Cha, a former US national security adviser, described the failure of US intelligence as one’s “worst nightmare”."
