North Korea bombed South Korea just now

oh well I didn't hear about the 2009 test. That changes things. At least they don't have thermonuclear devices. I am surprised they don't really, it was more than 50 years ago Castle Bravo exploded at Bikini Atol.

At least they don't have thermonuclear devices.

Nobody except themselves know this. It is probable that any nuclear weapons they do possess are one-stage, but it is impossible to be sure in this climate.

I hope the US doesn't get involved... that's just asking for a WW3.

Clearly we will, it's what we're best at.

Kim Jong Il has a great life in NK and knows he couldn't possibly win a war with any neighbouring states. He'll keep on performing minor skirmishes or "accidents" towards South but he'll never go further than that. And South won't assault either, for humanitarian reasons and fear for Seoul. So I doubt the WW3-option and lean more to a peaceful solution (And hope for it even more.)

My biggest worry is that with every year there are fewer south koreans with relatives in North and vice versa. It'll be easier for both sides to alienate each other even more once family bonds start to fade between the two nations. Who knows, Kim Jong Un might be reasonable? Third time's the charm.

EDIT: Cut away to keep it less political, but a question like this is haaard =/

Well hopefully this doesn't escalate but if NK keeps doing [censored] like this it might not end well.

I heard it first from BGSF. I dunno if that's sad or awesome. Seems to me like this won't spark a world war, but it might make the world economy a piece of [censored] if tensions continue mounting.

Ech, it's going to be winter soon. They do that every year, get some attention, some brutal cry that actually goes for help than announce that they are the man. Kind of like that kid that only bullies others because of trouble at home.

Wow. People in Korea are being killed by unprovoked attacks from their neighbors, and the first thing that comes to the OP's mind is a StarCraft joke?

This guy has my kind of sense of humor :tops:

My cousin is stationed over there <_<. Though, i doubt much will come from this since the south wants to have "peace" for long as possible but i fail to see anything but war. But in other news, Bethesda acknowledges http://kotaku.com/5697047/report-elder-scrolls-v-is-a-direct-sequel-to-oblivion!

Erm, I don't think war will happen. More would be too political... As to the TESV thingy...it's been running in the ES Seires board

South Korea and the US have a defense pact. If it escalates into a serious conflict, then we're obliged to assist the South Koreans. Personally, I just think this is KJI looking for attention, as usual. When we spend our time concerned with the goings on in the mid east, he gets lonely, and has only his own people to stroke his ego. So he pulls little stunts like testing nukes, sinking ships, and so on, hoping to get more money and aid, with the promise of behaving himself. Which he always breaks. Nothing new there.

this

The "Beloved Leader's" son is taking up leadership of North Korea, maybe this was an announcement "The man in charge will change, but you still can't [censored] with us!".

But probably more like this. OTJ training for the successor; military leadership trying to position itself, a grand announcemnt of the new man in charge...

Also, as was mentioned, winter is setting in; passes south are dwindling

How about more ineffetive sanctions anyone?

The Korean conflict technically never ended, there was a truce, but no official ending to the conflict.

Seems like a the cease-fire has ended. I hope SK does countless bombardments.

Or this will end like the recent Hezbollah-Israel skirmish.

What an horrible thing to say! :shakehead:

Do you seriously want thousands of innocent people to die for a misunderstanding during a military drill!!!

Although the situation is tense, I am convinced that the North / South Korea situation can be ended peacefully. Maybe not this year, maybe not in thirty years, but I am convinced that it is possible for the shadow of the Korean war to finally disappear without more bloodshed someday and for peace to be had for both Koreas.

War. War never changes.
Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything, from God to justice to simple, psychotic rage

The Romans waged war to gather slaves and wealth. Spain built an empire from its lust for gold and territory. Hitler shaped a battered Germany into an economic superpower.

But war never changes.

i need to add this for those who have not played fallout
the quote is from from fallout 2 and 3

I would hardly call pointing artillery at your enemy and firing at them a "misunderstanding". This whole Korea situation is a ticking time bomb that will explode someday.

South Korea Vows ‘Enormous Retaliation’ After North’s Deadly Island Bombardment
SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who convened an emergency security meeting shortly after the bombardment by North Korea, said that an "indiscriminate attack on civilians can never be tolerated."

"Enormous retaliation should be made to the extent that (North Korea) cannot make provocations again," he said.

South Korea said it returned fire and scrambled fighter jets in response, and said the "inhumane" attack on civilian areas violated the 1953 armistice halting the Korean War. The two sides technically remain at war because a peace treaty was never negotiated

wow, deep man. You should become a writer for CoD, you know when you die, and 'to live peacefully, one must prepare for war' or some other quote appears on screen, you should write that that stuff man.

My colleagues were about to fly to Korea for the branch project there tomorrow and they got everything postponed because of this. It's fun looking at their freaked out face.

"What? Postpone? What about canceling it?"
"Dude, it's only an island in the mid of no where."
"But my wife is all freaked out, I don't want to worry her."
"Dude, I have a wife too, and I'm going with you. Shut up."

Only if they can actually launch them correctly.

They don't have to, at that range they can probably fire tactical nukes with artillery.

Good on south Korea, they need to put the north in its place, and cripple it to prevent any more attacks.

All I have to say is damn maybe these FO games aren't just games, but a depiction of what might happen in RL. NK starts a war with SK they consume each other then turn on the rest of the world. *Wonders if he can stock up on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphosphonate...no radaway yet*

Funny you should say that. Yesterday, South Korea said that they mght requesting US tac nucs in response to North Korea's centrifuges.

In the late 80's it was a PnP game called Twilight 2000.
