I hope the US doesn't get involved... that's just asking for a WW3.

They probably would never get involved unless NK troops stepped foot on SK soil. Have North and South been in a state of technical war for decades or were they at peace? I really have no idea

I was just about to post this.

I have a feeling that this is going to spark something big. Young soldiers will die, old rich men will stay rich and old, as always.

When isn't N Korea taking pot shots at everyone?

Nah, to be honest it probably won't mean anything. Remember when they "accidentally" sunk that ship and killed 40 people a while back? Also that time they accidentally fired a rocket at America

Considering the current state of the world, the last thing we need is another big war breaking out.

But then again, its not like this was unexpected considering the tension over the last few years......we all knew eventaully north koera would do some action against the south.

And that "something big" will go down on December 21, 2012. I better get back to work on my bunker. :P

Thats a little bit different to shelling an inhabited island with artilliary though, I don't know, I just have a feeling that this could get a lot worse.

It's only big because N Korea is actually doing something now, in addition to it's a country, the US just doesn't really like, attacking one the US does. There are other places are constantly attacked with mortars, RPGs, or gunmen daily.

I get the feeling they're testing waters, which isn't a good sign.

EDIT: Looks like they've done this before, sometime in January at the beginning of the year. They flagged it as a mistake.

South and North are still at war.

It was a ceasefire and not an armistice.

Thats why the US keeps troops in the south and along the DMZ..they act as a tripwire.

Short of shelling Seoul,or the NKPA crossing the border in force there is no WWIII.

The Age (a fairly respectable Australian newspaper) has an http://www.theage.com.au/world/koreas-trade-artillery-jets-scramble-20101123-185fz.html up that has a few more details.

I don't see how people can see this as being a big war. NK has no allies now, and NATOs armies are far superior than the NKA, the war would be pretty one sided. The only thing they might have are Nukes, which are probably very ineffective.

Considering that they are still receiving and asking for aids from neighbouring countries, noticeably South Korea, they sure have a lot of (brainless) guts.

They'll do it, see what the reaction is.....but I dont think the US can really afford to fight another war so soon after the previous one. If the US comes out and says the wrong thing, North Koera may just do more damage.

China is still, pretty much, their sole ally.

China is NKs ally, and Japan is SKs ally, and China and Japan have been getting pretty tense about disputed islands recently as well. I don't think China or Japan will get involved at all, they are both against NKs military action, but its the small political posturing building up over time that causes bigger conflict.

About the only (vaguely-likely) way it could go big is if NK escalates things and China joins in. Which would be a completely stupid move for China, if only because it'd cut of a major chunk of its imports and exports. As far as I am aware, no other country associates itself with NK.

China has been distanting themselves from NK for a long time now. Also they are now economically tied to the US, so I doubt they'll not side with winning team that is making them loads of cash now. A lot has changed since the ceasefire.

They're also getting loads of raw materials from Australia. China may be far better known for its exports, but they're building stuff at a rate which makes their domestic demand pretty damn high, and they only have so much within their territory. They'd have some big problems if they couldn't sell anything, but not being able to buy would also chuck a spanner in the works.

Exactly. They're cornered, but what if they have nukes? Having few allies makes them even more dangerous.
