Nostalgic TV watching

Post » Sun Jul 20, 2014 11:51 am

hey,

Does anyone else ever go back and watch shows they watched as a kid, simply for the sense of Nostalgia it sends running through your veins?

I have been doing this a bit recently after I helped my father clear out his shed and ran across a bunch of old VHS tapes i recorded as a kid.. and while i now consider alot of these shows to be not as great as i remember, watching them does help bring me back to a more simple time.. a time before I had to pay bills or rent, a time where all i had to worry about was homework and what I would be doing for the weekend....

anyone else ever do this?

Sometimes. Have rewatched several movies that my dad and I use to watch together. Mainly bunch of John Wayne flix. Excalibur though was always my favorite and have watched it several time since he passed away in 2009. Which reminds me tomorrow will be 5 years. Always a depressing time of year.

Recently, I tried to watch really old, really girly tv shows like Winx Club and W.I.T.C.H that I would have gladly watched as a young brat but nowadays I find dull and a little off-putting (except for W.I.T.C.H's second season, that was okay). I decided to seek out the W.I.T.C.H comic book, though.

I've been watching the Sailor Moon remake, too. That's something I wouldn't pass up, though I find myself missing the old anime, mostly due to the old gags that seem to be missing from the remake. (*collapses* "Do you want me to take you to a hopsital!?" "...I'd rather go to a restaurant...") Luckily, the old anime is getting a re-dub, and since the new anime updates at a super-fast rate of one new episode every two weeks, that is another think I look forward to. Yes, it's also kinda girly but in a more bearable way that newer magical girl shows tend to avoid (Looking at you, newer Pretty Cure seasons).

As for old cartoons and such, like the above 90% of them are either boring or stupid to me nowadays (Dexter's Lab, Fairly Odd Parents, Power Puff Girls) but there are a few I miss a lot and will watch them if they come on TV (Ed, Edd n Eddy, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Oban Star Racers)

But yeah, it really does bring me back. Not too far since I haven't really gotten to the "pay bills and rent" phase of my life yet aside from simple gas and tuition payments. A time where I didn't have to worry about job interviews or cleanliness.

The original Star Trek series. I'll still stop and watch if I happen to run across one on TV .. which is quite rare these days.

I always enjoy watching movies or TV shows to remember my youthful years.

Not really for nostalgia, but when I have the opportunity I'll watch them because they're good. If I'm watching a show just for nostalgia, it probably means the show kinda svcks.

not necessarily, people need to stop using "Nostalgia" as a means to degrade something or say its not good, because thats not what it means

Nostalgia: a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland, or to one's family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time: a nostalgia for his college days.

I mean, if its only redeeming value (as I said, if the only reason I want to watch it) is nostalgia, the show itself isn't good. I'm not going to watch a show I can't enjoy without rose tinted glasses, I have plenty of other ways to nostalgiagasm.

I know what the word means.

Or it was good but you normally don't re-watch a lot of shows you've already seen because the time could be used watching shows you haven't seen yet instead. Nostalgia is as good a reason as any to re-watch something.

In fact, if you are re-watching something because it is good, then aren't you trying to re-experience a past good time?

I will on occasion. For me, it's all about the cartoons. There are some that just don't hold up, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but others like Beast Wars and the Magic School Bus get me that 90's vibe back. I love watching them for pure nostalgia. Live action shows... well, the West Wing holds up, but that's more plain quality than nostalgia.
