Firstly, less so with morrowind, we have direction. Whilst daggerfall just went ****!!! YOU GO SOMEWHERE . morrowind went "go north, then east, X will be along the road" and "you are going to have to properly search for the hidden object"you did it in your own time. Oblivion did "GO TO ARROW THAT TELLS YOU THE EXACT LOCATION OF WHAT YOU SEEK" and opened up with you witnessing the emperors assassination.Oblivon let you fast travel to all the cities though. skyrim did "GO TO ARROW" it didn't quite let you fast travel to every city straight away, possibly less simple.. but then we get to our next point
OMG WTF BBQ DWAGON!! and OMG WTF BBQ EMPQOW GOT KO. Morrowind doesn't offend at all in story because it made the player think about things like "what happened to nerevar?" and "who are the tribunal?" and "who is the neravarine?" and several dozen plot related things because it offers conflicting accounts that are not always clear on their validity. The game lets you kill ANYONE.. you can even kill Vivec or your original taskmasker- rough equivelant to killing all the greybeards or delphine. Oblivion and skyrim give you the freedom to do less and less again. You can't even kill characters that should be on your priority list in skyrim (ulfy or tulywully) As for story oblivion says "EMPWOW DEAD GO FIX IT" and Skyrim says "DWAGONS HEAR GO DO EVERYTHING" there is no mystery whatsoever. Morrowind had an introduction that gave stuff away if you were a Tes Fan but otherwise threw the occasional bit of information that caused doubt. Skyrim Pretty much Makes it a hobby of treating you like a five year old. It explains EVERYTHING to you and as soon as possible to boot. Skyrim doesn't give you anything to think about. Nothing about alduin, nothing about the Eye of Magnus, little of talos, why a dumner has purple eyes. Everything is either a one sided story or doesn't have a story. But hey.. morrowind let you rise through the ranks of a normal group. Oblivion does this with a questline for each group. Skyrim rockets you to leader after an epic questline of super uber importance.
Morrowind dialogue is sort of like vomiting a textbook and often options like occupation sound childish and silly ( Are you an acrobat? Cool, please explain all the things acrobats do? ) Oblivion seems to yell at me and skyrim is "state obvious" Most characters post Morrowind seem to be driven by one thing and only think in one way (war, talos, racism, being a crook, being a child vampire, being black, greymane competitor etc) Not only this but the Voices of the characters personified them like we need help. astrid is like "I AM DARK AND MYSTERIOUS" whilst Mercer was like "I AM AN ANTAGONIST" and there was a nord voice that pretty much symbolised it's line of "i am not a person, im a weapon in human form. Just unsheathe me and point me at the enemy" I could honestly believe that none of them were meant to be people but rather poor characterizations. It's as if bethesda don't believe that we can comprehend characters that are more like people.
and on the world design- Oblivion simply didn't have much of a culture to it. Skyrim Simplified cultures to primary school level... Imperials became Romans, Nords became Scandinavians, Redguards became Arabs, Altmer became Yellow British Nazis, Bretons are just another people, Dwemer now better suit the name "dwarves" , falmer blind goblin mario snow people, Dumner are Cockney and wood elves are Generic elves except the men are less pretty. Bethesda couldn't get clever with creatures so they threw mammoths and saber cats in. I can defend morrowind here- Morrowind's creatures would have seemed logical if they were made as detailed as modern technology would allow. Morrowind's buildings were Interesting but never realy seemed to break the laws of physics after their construction. Oblivion and sykrim kind of did a "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH" and so gave us the most generic architecture possible. Skyrim does better than oblivion in the housing department- But skyrim does that... a tenth as well as Morrowind did?
As for my character... i feel treated like a child. Again- Daggerfall gave me something hard to create. Morrowind game me an easy but meaningful character creation although didn't give me so many options. Oblivion let me make a class and choose the important for early game birthsigns and a race.. as well as my appearance (you look ugly, no matter what.) Skyrim gives you a makeover minigame and... Nothing else. Race matters little, class doesn't exist. It's just a vain little thing that draws in little girls. Looking at how vampirism and lycanthropy has evolved through the series its very much the same issue. There are no choice and consequences (other than picking the wrong perks in the stupid perk system)
But hey? What if we added some advlt content in? I think we all know the answer to that.. Bethesda wouldn't do [censored] right. I don't know if it will be like a Song of ice and fire Vs a game of thrones or like parliamentary musings Vs a pormo. Either way it's the immature "WOW S3X AND NAKIDS" rather than something logical, compelling or more complex than one of the mods on the nexus. Even mild nudity bethesda would strugly with. Look at spider daedra - Half woman half spider.. it's designed to be terrifying and disturbing. yet bethesda would either cover everything bellow the armpit because daedra care about modesty or they would give the demon nice and round briasts and an excellent waist because they want something nice (with good legs? ) whilst someone with taste would make the upper body old and naked because it's more disturbing. On the player having six bethesda would be likely to either make it seem like there are only a few (radicaly different, like mass effect) options which you have to build upon or simply throw 10 brothels in for every house. both don't make sense and the former compromises player freedom.
Freedom? Ah, we get less of it. All 15+ and 18+ games are played by people under those ages... but the fact that Bethesda caters for them pisses me off.
