Not enough development time

Post » Sun Jul 10, 2011 1:41 am

I still do not understand the obsession with spears. You guys would want the game delayed a full year JUST to have one item?
That is insane.

And I'm not saying that because I don't care about them, it just doesn't make sense.

I made the post and I wouldn't do it but I know that some people are crazy for spears and spears arent the only thing that didn't make it I understand that maybe it doesn't fit but if there reason is there wasn't enough time then I don't like it

Thing is, what role does spears fill? Long range? Short range?

Spears weren't in Oblivion. They didn't cut anything

Yes spears weren't in OB because maybe they didn't fit. Skyrim is the most resonable province out of every single one in tamriel to have spears because it is home of the nords and a more barbaric culture

I would take a delay until another gen of consoles, if the current hardware is limiting them as bad as they try to make it seem.

This I like!!

But really I think your reading into about spears too much.. Its not that they don't have time they had 5 years shaping/molding/working on Skyrim if its because there short on times that another issue altogether. As stated in the answer from the Q&A though they do not see it as high priority they rather work and polish up whats in the game right now to make it feel and look good.

Also longer developing and being delayed still will not guarantee of it being implemented and I can give you the most notorious example of such..

Sum it up. Why are spears not in? Because Beth doesn't want them in

Of course there is cuts, there is ALWAYS cuts, if there are not cuts, then it's at least less than could have been added. But postponing a game all the time because you add new stuff is stupid for many reasons: 1: your budget, yes you don't have infinite money and if you spend more money on a game than you'll get back when you finally release it, you cannot continue to make a new game after it or worse, your company craches around your ears. 2: software changes constantly, if Skyrim is postponed to 2014 (for example), new consoles would roam the market and Skyrim wouldn't be at a position to battle against the advanced technology, meaning it's better to get rid of Skyrim and start TES 6 or Fo4 with the new stuff instead. 3: it's sometimes just not worth spending time on some things, such as adding 1 year to development to add the option of having precisely everything toggleable, it's not worth it. (see points 1 and 2). 4: SKYRIM!!!!

No, not really. Spears doesn't really interest me much, infact i don't think i ever used them in Morrowind. I wouldn't want to wait longer for something i would most likely not use anyway. If you had said Werewolves on the other hand...

I don't think spears were ever considered for Skyrim, so they weren't "cut".

And honestly, you say that things have been cut for "deadlines", but in reality, they are cut in place of new better features. We are getting everything we had in OB, plus more, and they fixed everything that was wrong in Oblivion and made it better. They wouldn't have given us a release date so long ago unless they knew they didn't need any more time.

I'm sick of all these whine threads about what we don't have and what we want. If you want to spend years creating the best RPG of our life so you can have whatever YOU want in it, then good for you, get on that. Otherwise, discuss the cool new features we DO have, rather than the arbitrary things YOU want.

They had a small team work on Dragons for 2 years, not the entire team, but a small team to work on Dragons for 2 years......and your telling me they couldn't do spears.

Also, using a spear in single combat = you die.

They dedicated a small team to an essential part of the game.

Spears are not essential.

Yeah, it's surely more a case of didn't want to do spears, not couldn't.

(And that makes sense..... completely different set of combat animations from any of the other weapons, figuring out how to balance them so that people can't do the cheeseball Morrowind tricks of keeping people constantly out of reach, fitting them into one of the combat skills & coming up with - and fitting into the constellations - perks for the Spear.... all of that, for the incredibly minor goal of a weapon that's only cared about by a small but vocal minority? Yeah, they could do it, but it's not worth the time and annoyance. Too much effort for too little gain.)

I have a feeling it'd take more time than an extra month to do spears well enough to bother doing them at all. As for whether other things haven't made the cut due to time restraints, I'm sure they have though I don't know what exactly.

Pretty sure the AI path finding was bad enough to keep people out of reach. Sounds like spears just made it easier :P

My dear topic starter , I have bad news they finished the game already... They are now running it to check if the gameplay keeps being fun, if you play 20 dungeons you can get bored and stop playing. That's what they are doing now they are testing the [censored] out of it :P. To check if the gameplay keeps their player entertained. And of-course check for glitches and minor graphic updates.

[spears]They were in earlier games however.

They were only in Morrowind... Also Morrowind does not equal the whole series, which people always seem to get confused with.lol Morrowind has it so that must mean every single TES game must have it.lol

Pointless thread. Every single game ever made has had things cut because of development time. You know, games do eventually have to come out. The publishers/developers need to make back the millions of dollars they've spent developing the game. It's not like they have an infinite pile of cash to just keep pouring into a game so it can be worked on for a decade.

This, a thousand times. A lot of people here simply have no clue how professional game development works. There is a lot of money at stake, and investors who expect a product to be released eventually and do well. Bethesda does not have the luxury of including everything they want. In fact almost no developer does.

The thing I find ironic is that spears are so hard to make in a videogame (whole bunch of new scripts etc), but are extremely easy to make in real life. You just pick a long wooden staff and you sharpen it's edge. No wonder it's often considered a peasant weapon. So yes, having such a common item missing for the second frickin time it's baffling.

The game was said to be much further along than Oblivion was at its reveal when they revealed it last December. I doubt anything is cut for development time. Stuff is only added if they have time to add it at this point. The game is likely almost done now.

They wouldn't have given such a specific date so soon if they weren't confident.

Also, while I do feel bad for people that wanted them I couldn't care less about spears.

This is insanely stupid. There's always more to add, that's why they set a date.
They could literally be working on skyrim, continuing to add and polish until 2050

This thread shows a lack of knowledge on game design.
