Not enough Elder Scrolls in The Elder Scrolls

Post » Thu May 03, 2012 4:25 pm

Is Morrowind really that good? First TES game I played was Oblivion and that was last year. But I've put an hour or two into MW and it seems like it totally svcks, what with the lack of quest markers and stealing icon.

But yeah, I see what your saying about the lack of diversity in Skyrim. I think that there is such a lack because it is Skyrim and not Cyrodiil. Plus there is lot of racism.

I definitely would like to see npcs have better lines, especially ones about the events that have happened outside of Skyrim.

Totally disagree.

Morrowind forces you to connect with the game on a different level than Skyrim and Oblivion. Your "No map Markers or Steal icons" is an example of what makes Morrowind so good, for people who want "More than a game".

Because Morrowind is willing to let you screw up, and not afraid to make you learn, players form a different type of connection to it than other games. Morrowind doesn't hold the players hand, ever, and that opens up the possibility for experiences all your own. The downside is, of course, the entry barrier. Time and time again I've found myself dismayed at the notion of **"[auto censor wat? Morrowind-is-not-such-a-good-game]., i didnt no wut 2 do at start and died from drowning". A little bit of patience, and a little bit of reading go a long way in Morrowind. It's an overused phrase, but the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

Of course, now almost 10 years later Morrowind looks like ass and plays like ass. So that furthers the entry barrier. I'll admit, I can't even play the game without MGE installed.

**The Forum Auto-censors cleaned up my derrogatory Morrowind Statement(No Restricted language used), which ruined my posts' context.

This issue stems from Bethesda's desire to "Make the ultimate Stealth/Magic/Warrior" Game in each iteration. A perfect example of "Trying too hard", and they've gotten consistently worse.

+1000 agree

They keep trying to make each game more and more "epic" than the last and it's just getting silly. More empahsis on roleplaying, less on being the hero of the universe please.

Fantasy RPG needs it's Fantasy back... WTB alien lands like Morrowind/Shivering Isles, more alien creatures like Morrowind/Shivering Isles, more story/character depth like....

That's what i like about Kingdoms of Amalur, the environments, monsters and even some people don't resemble anything realistic :hehe:

But apparently that's "cartoony". Propably because brown isn't the dominant color

Elder Scrolls do nothing.

They're barely mentioned in their own games.

They have no integral value to ANY part of the game whatsoever. It is purely asthetic.

What have we learned? Bethesda isn't paying attention when they make a game that HAS TO DO WITH THE DAMN SCROLLS.

You know, another thing is, I found the storyline of Morrowind's MQ and the Nerevarine prophecy, all that, much more interesting than the events of Oblivion and the Dragonborn Prophecy. So far it makes Elven lands seem more interesting than Human ones. Perhaps if the next Elder Scrolls is set in Alinor (TES VI, anyone?) we will get another epic game like Morrowind but with obviously much better game mechanics.

I agree OP. Simply put, Skyrim is unattached to the world. Very little gossip. Heck, in OB NPCs would talk about Vvardenfell, Skyrim and Summerset Isles!! It's just so unconnected. Love the game to death, just wish it was more "involved" with the rest of the world; so to speak. :)

indeed skyrim needed a deeper "story" and a more complex quest line with more meaningful consequences that's pretty much my only gripe on skyrim

everything else is an improvement over previous TESs (with few minor details)

Had you started with Morrowind when it came out and then went to Oblivion you would like it...Because it's one of those games where you NEED to play it first before you play any after that.

I played Morrowind after Oblivion and I loved it. It just takes a few hours to adjust to the pace. I remember I waltzed straight into a cave, thinking of Oblivion-style level scaling, and was immediately clubbed to death by a huge Nord bandit! That's one of the things I loved about it - it was HARD (early on, later you become a god). I was afraid to go beyond the Ghost Fence because I wasn't sure what lurked there or if my character could handle it, after every NPC gave it a massive dread build up - good pacing.

Answer me this: Do you ever Reading the books in The Elderscrolls Game? Because They go into great detail about them, there is an infinite number of Elderscrolls, as confirmed in a book that details the work of an imperial librarian.

I do not agree.

Skyrim definitely feels more unique and Tamrielic than Oblivion did. I say it feels more unique because each hold has it's own little idiosyncrasies and aesthetic both in its cities and in its general geography. For example, I could never see a picture of Windhelm and confuse it for Morthal, or see a picture of Winterhold and mistake it for Dawnstar. This is because of the "little touches" like emblems, guard armor, things like that. The things that made each town in Morrowind different from the others even when the towns were in the same style. I would never confuse Ald Ruhn with Maar Gan, say. (This is subverted with fishing villages. I would need a second to differentiate Hla Oad from Gnaar Mok).

The game feels more Tamrielic than Oblivion because of the plot and because of the little touches again. They just have words for things that are inherently Tamrielic. The Voice is capitalized, as is Tongue, when used in the context of the thu'um (which is uniquely Tamrielic). Dragons, while immediately recognizable as Dragons, have the spin of not breathing fire but speaking it, and that their language is itself powerful. Having words be a literal power instead of their usual metaphorical one is very much Elder Scrollsy. Then you have Alduin, son of Akatosh. Ald son of Ald, the god who is son of himself. That sort of weirdo-loop is inherent in The Elder Scrolls. Then with the Daedra, they return to the threatening, alien beings they were.

POLITICS! You have the Thalmor, returning at last to the forefront for the first time since their hastily scrawled margin notes in the pocket guide, seeking to unmake Talos in order to unmake reality and become gods which they consider the natural state of all "true" Altmer. You have an Emperor who is well-intentioned but wrong for the job in these troubling times, you have a Nord warlord pretending to be a traditionalist to rally his people against the Empire when really the only beef is Talos. Then the war, while paced poorly, actually follows reasonable strategy in it's broad strokes,
Spoiler
especially the Stormcloaks who first move to Whiterun's breadbasket then take the rich silver mines of the Reach.

There's more, but that's off the top of my head. It's definitely got more stuff that screams Elder Scrolls in it to make sure you know what world you're in.

Skyrim from a gameplay perspective might be better then the previous Elder Scrolls games but as an RPG Skyrim isn't good at all. The Dialoge is incredibly annoying and facepalm worthy, Oblivion's dialoge is way better. Guilds are better too in Oblivion then they were in Skyrim, Companions has to be the worst guild in the history of TES.

Never, the Oblivion dialoges are unbelivable worse, of course Skyrim isn't "The Dialoge RPG" but way better thant this annoying strange dialogs from Oblivion.

Yeah, no.

I keep thinking people were spoiled on Morrowind, by now everything else that's not entirely different from the norm, it's boring and unimaginitive. Like I tend to facepalm when somebody says Dragon Age is just another generic fantasy setting. Especially, since Morrowind is basically ancient Japan with bugs and dinosaurs.

In TES the uniqueness can be found in the details, while it keeps a somewhat realistic setting. There are no demons, there are Daedra, Trolls are three eyed apes, dragons can change the world by speaking...
Skyrim has its own set of uniqueness, Thu'um, Dragons, Greybeards, Dwemer, Falmer...

And it's not like the outside world is unknown either, though it isn't talked about as often, because this is not the hub of the Empire (Morrowind too mainly talked about the Imperial City itself), but there are many mentions from outside. You meat with Redguard warriors from Hammerfell itself (CURVED SWORDS!!!), telling you about their own political problems and the Thalmor, speaking of, the Thalmor have agents everywhere, reminding you their power whenever they, you can learn about what's up with the Psijic Order, the remnants of the Imperial Mages guild, and you can inside the political plays of Imperial City in the Dark Brotherhood quest.

Also, I don't know what this "RPG" thing have to do with anything here, really this just proves how nonsensical it is and people just keep parroting it for no apparent reason.

I'm actually glad that soneone at Beth finally looked in a dictionary and found the definition of "fun". If I want choices and consequences, I play Mass Effect and enjoy my [censored] ending. If I want to (s)troll around in a big sandbox, I play TES.

[b]TES went from being a true RPG (complexity, real risk and reward) into a video-gamey (streamlining) RPG.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaay off the topic. I never said that Skyrim is a bad game in the opening post. My main conceren was that it's not so much Elder Scroll'ish.

Choice & consequence and open world do not have to be mutually exclusive.

as well, the so-called 'choice and consequence' of mass effect and basically all bioware games is completely juvenile and meaningless.

i agree bethesda made a lot of mistakes when making skyrim.

- Smithing and enchanting as skills with perks
- Not as much unique quest as previous tittles
- Perking system
- loss of attributes
- no magic creation, and the current magic system
there are a lot more but these i find to be the main problems, making the game feel more like a action game and less of a TeS game.

-snip-

Gotta agree with this. Skyrim screamed TES much more than Oblivion did to me.

If we're talking gameplay though, well, what should define an ES game? Anyone who has played Arena and Daggerfall knows how vastly different to Oblivion they are. Bethesda always move in strides gameplay-wise. You can like or love some mechanics, and hope they bring them back, but TES has never tied itself down to mechanics. There's not much that you could call a 'TES-mechanic' that skyrim does not already have.

I'm not sure. I think the only given for me right now is that Fallout New Vegas was a much better experience for me.

Same. I went back to Fallout after a few months of playing Skyrim. I enjoyed alot of things in it, but I played Oblivion to death
for three years. I think the worst part is that our feedback is not appreciated by the Elder Scrolls community. Instead of being
a warning to Bethesda, we are relegated to the "hater" corner. The worst part of that is, most of us actually enjoy Skyrim.

I truly believe Alduin was not defeated, I'm personally on the consensus that for a Dragon to die a transferance in power is required. The battle against Alduin was to anti-climatic. The battle against Alduin hasn't begun in my eyes.
