Not a fan of the legendary system

Post » Fri Dec 11, 2015 7:25 pm

Fallout 4 is a prime example of how not to do legendary weapons/armor. Legendaries work for end game for the same reason they don't work for the rest of the game; they make their non legendary versions redundant. When you find a legendary pipe pistol (lets say it's the two shot variant) there is no reason to ever equip a regular pipe pistol. You can now ignore every pipe pistol you'll ever find. You find a legendary helmet, you can now ignore every piece of headgear until you find another legendary one. You see the pattern here.

It's not that legendaries are a bad idea, it's that allowing legendaries to be found at any point of the game, especially early game, leaves you no reason to even look at anything unless it has a star next to it's name. Before I made it to diamond city, every piece of my armor was legendary, save for my helmet, and most of my weapons were as well. I found a legendary shotgun around level 10 and I'm still using it in my 40s. Since lvl 10, shotguns might as well have not be in the game for me.

The modding system makes this problem worse. You're never faced with a decision like "should I let this legendary hunting rifle go for this .50 cal sniper rifle with the giant mag and high powered scope that does twice the damage" because you can just mod your legendary hunting rifle into that same .50 cal sniper. It just feels so backwards for a fallout game to kill an enemy, ignore his weapon, and get happy because he had a lighter in his pocket.

Legendary system seems fine to me.

And hell, even among the legendaries, there are different guns better suited for different purpose.

The only thing that breaks that equillibrium is two shot which is simply BETTER than EVERY other legendary and therefore every other gun in the game of its kind.

Also, you still dont ignore his gun all the time because if it's a more advanced gun and you have the scrapper perk then it could provide some pretty decent junk that can be utilized.

I use about 3-4 legendary items between 8 pieces of clothing, and about 10 of my primary weapons...point being, you have the choice to use legendary stuff or not..just because you find a legendary item doesn't mean you HAVE to ignore all regular items of the same type..play how you want to..in all reality the game is easy enough to play without using any legendary items..

for powerarmor users, the legendary drops are non-existent!

in over 150h in my first run, i got only one (1!!) legendary power armor drop from a raider^^ :nope:

...the rest is meh too: 9 from 10 items are useless armor pieces and if i get a weapon sometimes, it's useless 9 from 10 times too :brokencomputer:

-> i'm not happy with the legendary drops

I've ditched legendaries plenty of times as they're usually some buff I don't pay attention to. Easier to forget about it then unmod my current version and remod the legendary to match what I had. I can't say I've used any legendary from early game at this point. So I fully disagree that legendary weapons negate the need for others. I rarely find something I REALLY want from a drop. And I'm fine with that. I shouldn't be finding something desireable from every one.

The absence of degradation does the same thing for non legendary stuff but massive loot is a staple of Beth's games and a virtual hoarders dream(guilty). At least this time around all the loot in the world serves a greater purpose than just piles of money.

I usually sell the legendary items, I have 2 pieces of legendary combat armour because of the extra rad protection they have (and not because of the legendary perk they have), the human killer gauss sniper rifle and the incist killer shotgun. Oh and I gave Cait some sort of legendary .45 machine gun that she does pretty well with.

Halfof the legendarys are kind of worthless anyway.

Why would I want a rocket launcher that does extra damage against insects?

I've found some armour that adds some pretty pointless bonuses as well.

But some are really good.

Albino Radscorpion :teehee:

More than the most of the time useless enchantments, what bothers me that there is only unique weapon in the entire game :swear:

Imo they just tried to rip off Gearbox Borderlands system and implemented a really shoddy Legendary mob system. Should've never done it...It's terrible...

[censored], even Corn Flakes revolver doesn't have a unique effect, it's just a generic Relentless .44 Revolver :banghead:

I'd trade legendary weapons for the couple of handful unique weapons you typically find in Fallout. I miss the Sequoia Ranger =(

Yes, which is the effect in every generic legendary weapon that's named "Relentless".

I'd prefer uniques as well over legendaries. At least should have some special visuals on the legendaries! Both options will definitely be modded sooner or later though.

Btw does anyone know how exactly the math goes for two-shot legendaries and sneak attacks? Example 30dmg two shot with ninja rank2 (5x dmg):

1) 30x5+30=180

2) (30+30)x5=300

3) 30x5+30x5=300

Which is correct?

(edit. My mistake on the ninja perk, the 5x is for melee, 3x for guns)

The legendary system is an inferior attempt at replacing ammo crafting from FONV. There you used armor piercing rounds on robots, hollow jacket rounds on creatures, and .45-70 Govt. SWC rounds to be a bad ass.

Twoshots is good, on a high damage weapon, because it increases your damage/ammo ratio.

But explosive is also good, for a similar reason (and works better against some opponents, though that depends also on the underlying ammo type and the damage resistance of the target).

And then there's legendary armor. (For some reason, I have not seen any twoshot armor!!!1!!1 ).

(But many legendaries I leave where I find them, for various reasons.)

Wrong. FONV just cluttered inventory with useless junk. All it was was quantity over quality.

As was stated, use or don't use legendary items as you see fit for your character concept. It's far more interesting than the zero rewards system from FONV and many other games.

My main problem with Legendary is that legendary enemies are so common that it killed all the excitement for me X( If I did not already play on Medium, I'd lower the difficulty.
