Not an issue, but a technical question

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 8:46 pm

I have an ASUS Radeon HD 7800 graphics card, and the game's minimum requirement is an AMD Radeon HD 7850. I'm running the game fine, though, so that's good. However, I'm considering downloading Fraps and recording some video when I get to the point that I can actually get the quest I want to record. The thing is, I don't know if this will add more load to my graphics card. My RAM and Core are significantly more powerful than the game requires, so if it's an issue of my computer needing to be able to do more at once, I should be good, but if it also adds more work for the graphics card, I may be in trouble.

tl;dr version: would having Fraps running and recording while playing the game add more of a load on my Graphics Card, or is any extra load just on the core and RAM?

I haven't used FRAPS in a while. FRAPS is mostly CPU intensive iirc. Although iirc which encoder is used does make a difference.

You do need a good GPU though. You'll want to get a steady 60 fps in-game to get a steady 30fps in your recorded video.

You'll also want a separate drive to record the video onto. Recording onto the same drive as which the game runs from will result in stuttering.

Also, do note that FO4 does multi-thread. It can use up to 8 cores (whether they be 8 actual cores or 4 cores with hyper-threading). Depending on the load FRAPS puts on the cores this can affect FO4's multi-threading performance.

There's a wealth of information about this on Youtube. Also with regards to different free programs you could use to capture in-game video.

GVR is usually a better way to record videos, it's AMD counterpart to Shadowplay.

It has a slight load on your gpu though

Your graphics card is an ASUS Radeon HD 7800 series, which means its either a 7850, 7870 GHz, or 7870 XT. I hate how AMD cards are bundled into series when recognized by the computer. Determining the actual chipset is sometimes difficult.

Do you have a large enough storage device to hold the uncompressed video?

You should try and see...

I would record at 30fps, to be sure your computer will be able to hit that frame-rate at least, thus getting a steady recording speed.

Also if you record videos with fraps - especially at high resolutions, a SSD drive would be very recommended!

Just watch that video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEGDgzlc7mA

This video may be old, but the comp. it's much faster than yours, anyway....

I just pulled up the Notepad document I made with the details on all the hardware in my computer. The GPU is actually a 7850. I was thinking it was slightly below minimum thanks to Can You Run It, which said it was slightly below spec. As for space, I only have one Hard Drive, but it's a 1TB drive with 737GB of free space; while I don't know for sure that I have enough space for the uncompressed video, I do have quite a bit of free space available, so hopefully I'll be okay.

Honestly, I was also planning on upgrading my graphics card once I get my tax return. Now it seems like it isn't absolutely needed, but it may be something I want to look into still, if only to get something from NVidia that will actually tell the computer exactly what it's chipset is. Not sure what would be good to go for, though; I'd want something that would last a while, but not be super-expensive. Suggestions would be appreciated, but for the most part, I'm still wanting to focus on the original topic: will I be okay with recording?

As for Fraps, I didn't really do any research; I just heard it was free and did what I wanted. However, a google search for GVR brings up Raptr, and I have no idea how that compares to Fraps. It says that because of the encoding it uses, it doesn't result in any degradation of system performance while recording. I'm not sure if that answers my question in regards to how recording affects my graphics card, but it sounds like it's something I could use instead of Fraps. I just don't know what the difference is other than the name.

I haven't used Fraps in a while. But at least on my much older system (Phenom X4) it caused input delay and substandard framerate. On modern systems this probably isn't the case, but storage space will still factor. The Video could easily be 1GB a minute. You will probably want a HDD dedicated to the unedited fraps video files, so that they don't impact the O/S and games' swap space.

[AMD] Raptr includes a GVR feature, similar to nVidia's ShadowPlay build-in to Geforce Experience. I can speak for Shadowplay, and it doesn't impact performance at all (although my hardware is pretty good).

Post your specs, as a graphics card upgrade may not be wise. Also if you know your power supply make and model include it.

Post a dxdiag report, please.

Use the Search box or Run... box, type: cmd and press Enter.

In the command prompt, type:

dxdiag /t dxdiag.txt
and press Enter.

Now go to the %userprofile% directory (C:\User\), find the dxdiag.txt file. Open the file. Select All. Copy and Paste its contents here in a reply. Use the spoiler tags, by either using the following:
[spoiler] dxdiag text [/spoiler]
or by clicking the icon (Special BBCode) next to Font menu, and selecting 'spoiler'.

Quick question: how do you copy something from the clipboard into the post window? I would have posted my computer specs in my last post, but every time I copied the text to the clipboard, the Paste button wouldn't highlight, and right-clicking didn't have a Paste option. Though to be fair, I was using the Quick Reply; maybe the actual reply has more options? Otherwise, I have to type everything out by hand.

Control + C to Copy

Control + V to Paste.

It shouldn't matter if you use quick reply or not.

I never thought to try the keyboard shortcuts. Thank you so much! That makes life so much easier!

System Hardware Specs are as follows. Note that I'm just including information on everything; I had some issues a while back figuring out what I had, so I found the thread on the Newegg forums with information on my parts and saved it. The Spoiler is basically just a copy-paste of that file. A bunch of this will probably be useless information, but as I said: I just dumped the entire file here.

As for the CMD prompt you gave, it didn't do anything at all. I wasn't able to find any .txt file with that name. However, I went online and found out that you can run dxdiag.exe, hit the 'Save All Information' button, and it creates a .txt file that way. Here's the result:

The command takes several seconds to generate the report, even though the command appears to finish immediately.

Your setup (including power supply) looks good. Though good upgrades would be more RAM, an additional HDD (at least 1TB), and maybe a better graphics card.

What is your budget?

What you mean with that. Was there an error message?

So far, nothing. I'm waiting on my W-2. Usually I get about $1,000 USD, but while I'm willing to spend a couple of hundred on a Graphics Card if need be, I want to use as much of that as I can towards a down payment on a car. The less I spend, the better.

No error message or anything. Another input line simply appeared; there was no text in the CMD prompt, and when I went looking for the text file in the appropriate folder, there was nothing there by that name. After double-checking and trying the line again, I went to My Computer and did a search of the entire C drive for a 'dxdiag' file. All files were from months, if not years, ago, and none of them were .txt files. Even now, probably half an hour to an hour after inputting the commands twice, there's still nothing in the appropriate folder.

Well, the command prompt shouldn't display anything. When you navigate to C:\Users\ directory, you might have to refresh the windows explorer screen.

I don't have a Windows 7 system to test it on.
