I know. My specs are a bit dated, but again, the game should at least launch.

If you youtube "fallout 4 low end pc" you can see people run the game on older GPUs, dual-cores and with less than 6gb of ram.

The computer I was having this issue on has only 6 gb of RAM. It runs the game fine. The only issue is sometimes it might crash from not enough memory (though I have not experienced any crashes yet).

I'm not sure why the DLLs work. Just adding the one audio one directly to the steamapp > fall out 4 folder fixed the issue entirely.

However what you may be experiencing may be a different problem than what I experienced. I uninstalled steam, then reinstalled it. I then tried to launch the game not from steam itself, but from the .exe in the folder. It gave an error that I then looked up and found the solution to.

If you do not see that error, then your issue might be completely unrelated to the DLL files being required for certain computers.

I tried reinstalling steam, FO4 and all the .dll files seem to be good to go. Windows event viewer doesnt give me an error code, but the event name is "APPCRASH". Awfully generic.

One thing I am noticing is that upon launching the .exe, the game launcher can't/doesnt detect my video card and sets the settings on low. Does this mean that the game doesnt recognize my GPU at all?

Im ok with upgrading my GPU, IF that is indeed the issue. Id be pretty upset if the game still didnt work after spending $200 on a GPU.

I solved this problem for my computer! I can play it at last!

It was my Anti Virus software that was stopping it running. If you use Windows 7 with AVG it might work for you too .

Symptoms:

Windows 7 x64 Pro. AVG software.

Launching from Steam or running FalloutLauncher.exe the splash screen launcher would run but clicking play would not run the game. If I'd run the launcher from Steam I'd see the Steam popup saying "Preparing to launch Fallout4" for a couple of seconds and then the splash screen would reappear. Running the launcher directly, the splash screen would disappear for a few seconds and then reappear. Using Windows Resource Monitor fallout4.exe would run but be immediattely terminated. No Windows event would be created, no error message displayed.

Running 64-bit Dxdiag 64-bit showed no problems with my setup.

Solution:

AVG was blocking it from running. I turned off AVG protection temporarily by right clicking the AVG icon in the taskbar using "Temporarily Disable AVG Protection" and selecting "Until restart". The game then launched but when I restarted my PC it wouldn't launch again. To make the change permanent I added an exception to AVG to stop it from scanning the Fallout 4 installation folder. To do this, Open AVG, then Options, Advanced settings, Exceptions, and then add the name of the Fallout4 installation folder which in my case was C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\.

I hope this helps someone, we've waited too long only for this many people to suffer this problem.

This is RIDICULOUS!!!!!! I get it fixed by changing some options in the nVidia control panel yesterday. I try playing the game today thinking everything is working now and it does the same DAMN THING AND CRASHES INSTANTLY WHEN CLICKING PLAY FROM THE LAUNCHER......................................................The same thing happend the night before last.. i get it working then i try to play the next day and BAM CRASHHHH.

Tried everything, game has run twice but fails to do so 100s of other times.

Have noticed my falloutconfig.ini files in documents and steam show different values however none of the ways of changing these or making them the same has any effect.

After pressing play screen flashes black several times.

Getting real sick of bethesda's 'support' of sending automatic replies and not being helpful at all.

Hello! I found a fix to this. First a little background then to the solution. Played the first couple of days and logged around 22 hours. I had a problem, different from this, and still do. If you find a solution for that, please post in this link...

So, I figured I would start from scratch after not being able to access any of my saves, but able to create new characters. I reinstalled and came up with this post/problem. After reading a lot of what people were doing, to solve this issue, this is what worked for me...

1) Open My computer 2 times. This is for two windows because later on we are going to compare Fallout4Prefs.ini which are located in different areas.

1a) C:\Users\ (username)\Documents\My Games\Fallout4

1b) Click and open Fallout4Prefs.ini

1c)**Steam puts the games in two locations, character saves in my documents and applications wherever you install.

2) Open the other location (where you installed) My install location may be different than other peoples'

2a) G:\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\Fallout4

2b) Click and open Fallout4Prefs.ini

3) Compare the two notepads...especially these lines that have to do with your display resolution:

Finally managed to get the game to work kept crashing on launch. Many thanks to everyone that posted possible solutions.

My problem was the Compatibility to Windows 7 (64) & running as administrator.

Right click on the game Fallout 4 in the library in steam.

Properties

Local Files Tab

Browse Local Files

Right Click FALLOUT.EXE

Properties Tab

Compatibility

Check Run This Program As an Administrator

‘‘Run this mode in compatibility mode for’’ and select the dropdown for windows 7 (Mine was on Vista!)

Then do the same for FALLOUT4LAUNCHER.EXE

Guys, I FINALLY got mine to work. After all the things I tried, including going as deep as checking the .DLL files, I'm still not sure what the problem is exactly. But the way I fixed it was by playing it with the Fallout4.exe in Windows 8 Compatibility mode! Kinda biffs me that it's something as simple as that, but let me know if that works for you guys!

I'm getting pretty sick of doing this though, it's been 3 days and a lot of people haven't been able to play. This is getting really ridiculous.

I replied to Bethesda's autoreplier (as they suggested) and I have yet to get a person talk to me about this. I want to enjoy this game, I want to be able to spend the ludicrous amounts of free time I am about to get on playing Fallout 4 rather than trying to fix a game that I shouldn't have to fix.

I should've known not to preorder a Bethesda game, they've lost the respect of a customer and I doubt I'll preorder a game again.

That being said I'm sure the game is good as Bethesda makes good games when they aren't bug filled and I've spent to many hours in Skyrim and Oblivion.

Here's a problem that I'm hoping someone can fix, before I reinstalled the gameI switched it to the beta but when it downloaded apparently I couldn't select the beta anymore. Does anyone know a solution to this? The beta has something to do with the audio drivers which will be the next thing I focus on checking.

Tryed all of the new "fixes" that came up. Nothing have worked for me. An in compatibility mode I can only chose Vista/ Vista SP1/Vista SP2/ Windowsk Server 2008 - I have Windows 7.

Ok guys, I got some hint for you all that may (or not) help with finding some fix that will work. I finally found a way to see the main menu, intro and even play a game ( not good enough becouse it's like 2-3FPS), but it worked.

So what I have done was:
Right click to your desktop
Turn on Nvidia Control Panel (at least it's what I translated Polish name for it to english)

Then I chose 3D settings from list and after that Menage 3d settings
Then you end up with Global settings and programme settings.
So I chose programe settings , found Fallout4.exe and instead of global settings (High performance Nvidia GPU) I chose Integrated GPU and saved the settings.

And this allow me to finally launch the game. The menu was working smooth, intro also, but the game was like 2-3 FPS on the lowest settings (what else you expect from Integrated GPU)

But what this tells me it's that is not a problem of "not good enough GPU".

Installed a new GPU and the game worked immediately, this seems to be an issue with hardware.

Game is amazing!

Ok guys, so I have somehow fixed it for me, it may not be the best way but its the only one I've found. I have uninstaled geforce game ready drivers and here http://www.geforce.com/driversI have found the oldest drivers. Mine was 352.86 version, it's like half year old. And after I've instaled those the game is working.

Try it for yourself, it might help. If this version won't help, try the other one, just not the newest.

The problem somewhat fixed on my computer after installing ENBoost - http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/332/?AND rename/delete/archive/whatever GameOverlayRenderer64.dll in Steam folder. It seems to me that the game overlay from Steam causes all the start problem.
