Not leveling

Post » Thu Oct 01, 2009 11:02 am

I am at level 31. It seems my EXP bar is not really moving, or if it is moving, it's moving very slowly. I even went into an Oblivion Gate, and even there it wasn't moving much. Has anyone noticed this before at level 30ish?

It all depends on what your major skills are. Every increase you get in a major skill moves the bar 10%. Ten increases in major skills qualifies you for a level-up.

I was once level 30-ish. The problem is, as hard as you train in the Major Skills, they are very, very slow at this level (with the sole exception of Conjuration perhaps).

Every skill at this level requires pain-staking time and effort to upgrade.

Let's face it -- at this point, I'd tell you to start all over again. Unless you have a good mod of some sort, you
will have found that you were getting the highest level armour at around level 20, so from here on out, you will only be getting the same 7000 septim weapons that you can only sell for 4000,
the same boring old armour and even enchantments get stale, unless you can make them yourself.
Once you have a horse, a house, have saved the day for Cyrodiil and Shivering Isles, there isn't much to do.

Don't get me wrong, you will have played for over a hundred hours, but why continue on? With very few new things, you will enjoy yourself far more by starting out with a new
character, --- try something completely different, mix up your game style. Become a vampire, a thief, assasin, fighter, mage, dungeon-runner or reclusive hokerr -- just try something new.

If your heart is set on continuing with the old character, then you will have to put in the effort to gain levels, or try a mod like Oblivion XP (I think thats it), that will let you level up faster.

Leveling does start to slow at the higher levels but since there is nothing new to be seen at levels above 23 IIRC there is no reason to push your level. If you are enjoying your character, Just play and forget about the leveling. If it really matters, you can always spam your major skills (practice them in isolation.) For instance, make a spell that damages fatigue one point for one second on self and cast it over and over to increase you destruction skill.

Other than for bragging rights there is really no need to go to far beyond level 30 anyway.

Sometimes the leveling bar appears to stop all-together if you have paid for a lot of training from various trainers. It will start again, don't worry, the game is just counting points to "catch-up" to your level, that you would be without the training.

I really enjoy playing with my character. I'm not the type to start over on a game and make new character unless i'm online playing with others. I level everything i can on my character; therefore, I have most at Master skill level. There is no way i can level up, by just killing monsters?

No. Take a look at your 7 major skills. Any that are not already at 100 are the ones that can help you level. If, for example acrobatics and mercantile are the only ones below 100, then you would need to do lots of jumpin' and sellin' :P

As previous posters have said, the closer a skill gets to 100, the harder it becomes to level.

Regarding what the game provides at higher levels, there is nothing new at all above level 30 except the same enemies with higher hitpoints. The last bits of top leveled loot are available at 30.

You might want to look in to the daedric shrine quests to get the multi skill boosting book from the final one

Sorry Oblivion doesn't level like most games. The devs intentionally made it so you level up by using the skills you choose as your major skills. If you want to levelup by picking flowers, opening locks, healing people, selling stuff, running fast and sneaking around you can without completeing quests or killing stuff. On the other hand, if all your major skills are things you use when killing, then killing will make you level up. I quite like it, actually. :)

My thief-type characters get really slow around level 28-30, most of their skills are at an admirable number. Also, as a thief when you're adventuring, you're not utilizing your sneaky skills, so things don't level fast anymore.

So it depends on what your 7 main skills are. If your armor and weapon type are maxed, that's almost ALL you need to go through the game.
