Not sure if my PC falls in the Minimum System Requirements

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 11:20 am

Can someone please tell me where my PC system falls regarding the TES-IV: Oblivion system requirements for version 1.2.0416? I need to know whether my PC falls within the Minimum system requirements, below the minimum system requirements, within the recommended system requirements, above the recommended system requirements, or somewhere inbetween the minimum and recommended system requirements!?

I ask this because I noticed that (even without mods) everytime I pause the game near a waterfall, the sound of the waterfall gets muted until I return to the waterfall after traveling some distance away from it, as well as the dead trees just outside the Kvatch city walls appearing bloated/fat when viewed from a pretty good distance!

My PC specs (according to my DXDiag):

You do meet the requirements...good enough for mediumish settings. Your issue may be a sound or codec one.

Because you are using onboard audio (no dedicated soundcard), you should try disabling music in your .ini file file. You can find your .ini file in your My Documents\My Games\Oblivion folder....it is the configuration file named Oblivion. Open it with Notepad and do a CTRL+F for this line:

bMusicEnabled=1

change the 1 to 0 and save the file. Refire up the game and see if anything improves. The game can get iffy with onboard audio and the music files in particular.

The codec part is in reference to the Roxio files you have. If you don't even use the software, uninstall it. Otherwise, you can try K-Lite's Codec Replacer pack (Basic):

Okay then! Besides the music/sound part, since I have a medium-ish settings on my PC, what will I need to upgrade if I'm to get my PC to play Oblivion in at least the Recommended settings! And no, I do not trust http://svc.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/ to tell me whether I pass or fail as it is not even completely 100% accurate at all! So what kind of upgrades will I need just to meet the Recommended system settings?

Well, depends on how much you wish to spend? If you live outside the States, indicate your country and currency.

Your current X2 3600+ is one of the slowest dual-core processors ever made, so it will probably be a bottleneck for many modern video cards. However your Dimension E521 motherboard does support some of the older AM2 (not AM2+) processors and those can still be found and are relatively cheap (Stateside at least)....so you still have options. So what's the budget?

So in other words I'll have no choice than to open up my PC and have the processor taken out and a new improved processor parts put in place just so I can play Oblivion? So this upgrade is gonna have to require me to take it to the shop because I don't even know how to perform surgery on my PC!? Plus, livcing in the states (with it's current economy), I don't even mke anything more than 100 dollars per month to survive off of!

I don't understand. You can play Oblivion perfectly well with your PC. As I'm sure you have discovered, already.

Sure, the better your PC, the "better" (faster, smoother, prettier, more impressive, whatever) your experience of the game. But you can *play* Oblivion with less than you have right now.

In fact, you either have approximately the "recommended" level of hardware, or close to it. Considering that list was of quite old stuff... yeah. Pentium 4? Oh noes! How could you possibly match that?! ;)

Yes, on low or medium settings! But everytime I have my Oblivion on high or ultra high settings, on HDR, and all three of the Distant Renderings checked on the Oblivion Options menu and go to play the game, I take a pretty heave FPS hit whenever my character is walking in the grass, in some areas of the Imperial City, or in the Great Forest near or close to an Ayelid Ruin on a clear day with few clouds (especially when being attacked by enemies!), and this happens even with no mods at all!

And you go to say "Pentium 4? Oh noes! How could you possibly match that?!"! What did you mean by that?

And you also said that my list was of quite old stuff.....! I don't know what you meant by it! Those things listed on my DXDiag are of the current stuff I have on my PC! So if you say that the stuff listed on my DXDiag is old stuff, then what should I upgrade? Or should I just invest in a whole new top of the line gaming PC?

No, I meant that Bethesda's list of "recommended" hardware is (now) really old stuff. Not your gear. Yours is kinda in the middle. Not terrible, nor great.

edit: The other thing to remember is that Oblivion is both flat out demanding and (in places) poorly coded as well. What this means is, no matter your PC setup (e.g., my own is no slouch) there will be areas/circumstances that slow the game right down. Assuming you go for the highest settings, and especially with graphical mods, and so on. Of course, the higher the resolution you play at, the more this is so, too.

Well the simplest upgrade would be just to get a new video card alone. However with the processor you currently have, I can't really suggest something so powerful to the point that your processor just holds it back. You'd preferably want a balance between the processor and video card. Since money is rather scarce for you, a simple upgrade would be for a Radeon 4650:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131360&cm_re=radeon_4650-_-14-131-360-_-Product

And there's also the Radeon 4670 for something more powerful. This is about the most I'd suggest if you don't want to upgrade your processor either:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102855&cm_re=radeon_4670-_-14-102-855-_-Product

Both will pull at least high settings in this game....the 4670 is much more powerful, but will certainly be bottlenecked by your processor. The Radeon 4650 would be a better balance.

No, I meant that Bethesda's list of "recommended" hardware is (now) really old stuff. Not your gear. Yours is kinda in the middle. Not terrible, nor great.

What settings would you recommend I put my game at in the "Options" tab? I go to click the "Reset to default" on the "Options" and it sets it back to "Medium" settings with the "screen effects" set to "bloom" and the "distant trees" unchecked in the "distance rendering" section of the "options" in Oblivion's options section! But the problem now is that my visuals looks like crap whenever I go to play in this mode! Is this how my PC is meant to play Oblivion safely? :( I may be better off just getting http://www.oldblivion.com/!" :(

Well, I don't even know how in the **** my computer even got in this kind of hardware bottleneck!!! >:( My dad (who claims he's a computer expert) is the one who built the computer rig for me from an old XP model (which explains why it came with a letterbox flatscreen monitor rather than the widescreens required by all Vista certified PCs), but obviously he doesn't know anything about piecing computers together the right way other than fixing them up to work for the internet! I don't wanna have to open up my PC to put a card or chipset in because I may not even know what I am doing! (I'm a gamer, not a computer surgeon!!!) I'd rather just get some kind of a loan from a loanshark so I can get the proper gaming rig (Alienware, perhaps?) to play this teck heavy game!!! But then, I'll be in debt for the rest of my life!

(Someone told me once that they had to spend at least $3,000 on a PC so they can play Oblivion on the PC the way it's visually meant to be played, with a few major user made mods!)

It's not hard. But, if necessary, you could always get the shop you're buying components from to do it for you - for a $50 fee, maybe? Or even less, hopefully. Heh, if I was in your part of the world, I'd offer to do it! Know anyone (friend, family...) who might, in your place?

Or hey, you can always get help on forums (for example ;)) or by watching Youtube HowTos, etc. Whatever works. Also, plain old reading up on things (and RTFM) generally pays off, more than anything else might.

They're mistaken. My PC hasn't cost anywhere near that much, and does everything I want it to, including letting me play seriously tricked out Oblivion. Check out some of those "best gaming PC for $xxx [or $xxxx]" lists that are all over the internet. It's amazing what you can put together for such a small amount of money, sometimes. And right now, there are some excellent options on the low to mid end of things, that will still (mostly) kick the ass of older games, no problem. And play brand new ones, but maybe not absolutely maxed at Full HD and higher. But who knows... and that's where you look at benchmarks, for the relevant hardware and resolution(s).

You think I should just give up playing Oblivion on the PC until I get the right kind of PC upgrades?

And no, I don't know anybody in my neck of the woods who'll fix my PC or put the parts in for free, absolutely noone!

And with all the confusing stuff, I might instead just get a refurbished used XP PC, instead, with new required parts to run Oblivion! But that'll cost me at least a grand! And in todays US economy, that won't be easy! My only hope is to make a funny video and upload it to YouTube in hopes that it attracts millions of quick views and make money off said video and then use the money to get a well updated/upgraded PC so I can play Oblivion at a comfortable pace and framerate that doesn't make my brain want to die!

That's up to you. If you can play it, then why not, if the game appeals. On the other hand, if it'll only annoy you, for whatever reason, then other games (or even other hobbies altogether) might be just the thing. ;)

And if you're *that* short of money, a gaming PC is perhaps not the right thing to be focusing on in your life. Just my 2c there, of course. Some forms of entertainment are either free or very cheap, and still good. Including using older PCs to game on, if not at the highest settings, etc... but anyway.

If your dad knows a little bit about computer parts and stuff, perhaps you could buy a graphics card (as suggested upthread) and he could put it in the machine for you? While the CPU isn't that strong, I can't see it slowing you down too much, at least if you don't go adding mods that feature heavy scripting / AI / NPC addition or the like. The sheer graphics power is what you seem to be lacking (and lamenting). So, the cheapest upgrade that you'll see dramatic improvement from is the GPU. I'd go for as good as you can get, without breaking the bank, or power supply... Maybe an HD 5670? Around the $82 mark from Newegg, after rebate, including shipping. Very decent performer for the money.

The power supply is key - perhaps your dad would know the brand and model of that?

Okay! I still get slowdowns even without mods (example: My FPS shows up at only the teens whenever I'm walking/running thru the Great Forest, especially near the Ayelid Ruins, as well as when I'm in certain areas of the Imperial City.) So with my PC's specs, what's the setting you would recommend I set my game to within the Options folder? I had my settings set to "High" with screen effects set on HDR and set the resolution at 1280 x 1024 and all the Distant Rendering checkmarked due to how clear and undistorted the visuals looked! To me, any other setting (medium and lower) just looks too much like it was made on a 64 or 128 bit system (alas Morrowind, GTA San Andreas, Zelda OOT)! So I'm not sure if you're recommending me to set my settings to a lower resolution than what I was used to before (like medium or lower) if I'm wanting to continue playing the game without straining out my system until it's time to upgrade! I could also just get and download and install OldBlivion as well! WHat would you recommend with my current system?

You keep asking us what you should set your in-game settings to. Why are you asking us? You need to set them to whatever is best for YOU. If setting them low makes the game look ugly to you, then you need to set them higher. If setting them higher makes the game run slowly for you, then you need to lower them. Looking ugly and running slowly are subjective... everyone has their own tolerances. You need to set you game based on your tolerances. You will have to make sacrifices... there's not getting around that.

Did you try turning off the music in the .ini (in the .ini... not the in-game settings page) as was already suggested? That may give you a performance boost but you're using Vista so it may not. Turn off the grass (or lower it significantly)... that will give you a performance boost. But you need to get a grip on the fact that you can only do so much without opening your PC and replacing some of the hardware inside (or just buying a whole new PC) if you want high or ultra-high settings. You just aren't going to get that with your hardware. Period.

Go here and read this. There's a section on in-game settings.

Taking Ozmandias' post to heart, firstly.

Also, have you tried a combination of the Vibrant Texture Pack and Bomret's Detailed Normals? It's a couple of mods that will either have *no*, or (possibly) extremely little, impact on FPS, but looks very, very nice indeed.

In addition, http://tesivpositive.animolious.com/ is full of immensely useful info, and some very good advice here and there. The section on Tuning Oblivion alone could help a bit, I suspect. If read and applied correctly, I mean.
