Not sure how I feel about Benny...

Post » Sat Aug 07, 2010 7:12 am

This is my first play through. I don't want any spoilers of what's to come, but if I missed something, I'd like to know. Right now, I'm at this point:

Spoiler
I just arrived at the Legion camp where Benny is tied up in Caesar's tent.

I haven't really done any side quests so far, other than what was necessary to get the clues I needed to track down Benny. My mindset going into this is to track down the guy who shot the PC and return the favor. That was my first priority. After he was dead, then I'd loaf around the wastes. There were a lot of things I didn't know (and some I still don't) going into this, like who sent the package, who was to receive it, the purpose of it, etc. But, I didn't care. Someone tries to kill you, you kill them back. It's just a matter of principle. With where I'm at now, it gets a little more complicated.

Spoiler
Knowing all the major players in the game, I know why Benny would want to get the chip. I kinda agree with the guy (based on the story he told in Caesar's tent) that none of the other factions should have control of New Vegas and that it should remain free. On the other hand, the PC was just some clueless courier for a delivery service not affiliated with any of the factions. Trying to kill him seemed unnecessary. Benny could have just taken the chip and maybe roughed him up a little. Mojave Express would have just written it off as just a hazard of traveling The Wastes.

On that note, I'm not even sure where the package came from and why it was being delivered (or even to whom). I have a strong feeling that it was intended for Mr. House, but why he didn't just send a bot to get it is beyond me. I'm not sure if all this was explained before the Legion camp, but if it was, I missed it.

So, right now I'm kinda torn between killing him for trying to kill the PC, or just letting him go/helping him escape because he seems to be a thorn in everyone else's side as much as mine, so I might as well keep him in the picture. It's more of a moral dilemma than anything. Can anyone offer some advice without spoiling what's to come?

Thanks.

Kill the bastard. That's what I did, back at the casino. There are some lines you don't cross, killing a complete stranger while he's tied up and after you've just robbed him is one of them. Benny doesn't deserve leniency.

Not to mention betraying him when he forgives you.

How did he get the chance to run that far?
He's a lousy shooter and an even worse talker.

Get done with him, quickly and properly.

I only let him escape on my Yes Man files, so that one day he can look back on Vegas and realize that his dream did come true-although it's no longer his dream. He will realize all he is missing!

He's actually pretty tough. Took care of quite a lot of Fiends at the Tribal Village before the intro of NV using only his pistol. He managed to move from the Tops to Cottonwood Cove unprepared, and arrive unharmed. He sneaked onto a Legion boat and made it all the way to Fortification Hill. He managed to aquire a legionaries' armor to disguise himself and sneak into the Weather Station. He did forget to do something about his hair though. His neat haircut did stand out among the savages a little. Still, not bad.

That's the thing. It really wasn't explained to me why he had to kill the PC. Plot-wise, it just seems out of place.

I was going to do him at the casino right off the bat, but the dialogue triggered and from the beginning I knew there was more to this than meets the eye. I figured I could pump him for information, then pump him full of lead. The way I figure it:

Spoiler
His heart might be in the right place about keeping New Vegas independent, but being the double-crosser he is, he's probably feeding me a line out of desperation. In all likelihood, he just wants to take over New Vegas for himself. The fact that he tried to kill me for no apparent good reason leads me to think that he's just a sociopath. In which case, I might as well just take him out. Still, the gangs are all douchebags, Legion is a bunch of loony douchebags, NCR is fine enough as long as they don't get too close, and I haven't yet learned much about BoS in this game, but they kinda seemed creepy. Strangely, I kinda don't blame Benny too much. In his situation, I would do the same thing...minus the attempted murder of innocent couriers.

But, I have more immediate problems now:

Spoiler
Caesar "gave" me the chip so I can check out the bunker, but I don't see an entrance in his camp. When I try to leave the fort, they won't let me without taking the chip back. Is this like a Catch 22?

Who started the thread, punkbohemian said that in the beginning he was pretty determined
to kill the man as soon as he tracked him down but then things got more complicated, thus
mine was a rethoric question. I was implying that if he missed anything, was the opportunity to
end matters at The Tops.

So, my suggestion that it is time to make things simple again without any more faltering,
as others have also already said :D

EDIT:
But, I have more immediate problems now:

Not really.
Spoiler
One can leave the Fort safely, even if the chip is taken away, and get back for clearing the bunker once one is truly ready to do it.
You find the entrance to the bunker walking to the right and downhill direction when leaving Ceasar's tent. It's inside the building
near a circle of practice dummies with some legionaries training.

I let him run from me through the Mohave thus putting the fear into him and then slaughter him in the Arena like the dog he is. I like his suit, it clashes with EVERYTHING!

On your more immediate problem, PunkBohemian: do you not have a quest arrow on your compass for your current objective? If not, you're looking for the weather monitoring station, it's in the SW corner of the Fort.

Well, if as you say, you've done nothing but chase Benny without doing any sidequests, then you've missed a number of key things that would give you a better idea of what's going on, what options you could have, and what you could be doing at this point in the main quest. Have you talked to Mr. House, or Yes Man? Or the NCR ambassador? If not, then you don't yet realize there are a bunch of different options right now, where you are, and you simply aren't aware of and don't have access to most of them yet, due to your tunnel-vision pursuit of Benny. If you don't care, that's fine... just tellin' ya. Just be careful you don't paint yourself into a corner from which most of those other options will no longer be available to you anymore.

Me, I'd have killed the bastard in Vegas. No benefit to you letting him escape and get captured by the legion, especially since you're supposed to hate him and want him dead soonest.

Like his historical inspiration, Bugsy Siegel, the guy is a punk. Give him two in the head, but with a caliber big enough to finish the job.

I'm probably one of the very few people that liked Benny. (although part of this may have been his suit and maria).

The guy has balls. he i attempting to go against the main benefactor of new vegas, is willing to wage war against both Caesar's Legion and NCR, stabs everyone in the back multiple times, and dies like a man *unless you pick crucify*. You got a respect a man who is willing to do all that just for his goals (as twisted as they may or may not be). He seemingly helped run the Tops okay as well so it's not like he did not have leadership skills. In the end it really pained me to kill him that first time...but then I got his suit and maria and realized he's not worth saving if it means I can get that awesome suit and gun.

I just dont understand how some whiny slimy little guy like Benny managed to beat our big brave scary Courier in the first place, TBH.
Taken down by a man in a penguin suit and a bunch of henchmen? When the courier can easily wipe out an entire camp of Khans?
mkay..?

It was a surprise attack thanks to yes man Benny knew exactly where he/she would be and could set an ambush for him/her. the fact the courier was also not wearing clothing other than underwear makes it more likely that they got him/her in his/her sleep.

Most of the time I just flat out kill him, he already ambushed me to steal the chip, then lied to me at the Tops and had the Chairmen try and kill me, after all that you dont get another chance. Crucifiction actually sounds like a pretty nice choice....

If I had the chance to side with him when he gives you the option in the casino ( I didn't put that in a spoiler, because you're already past that part) then I would never kill him. But since my options are let him go, or kill him, I just kill him on principal.

Also, the only reason I'd side with him is that I like the actor who did him. :3

I like the guy, too. He keeps trying to kill me, but he must have a Charisma of 10 because the more I get to know him, the less it bothers me.

Right now, he's hanging with Caesar (not literally, like on a cross :P ). After I finish dealing with the White Glove freaks (I accidentally got roped into their business by that cattle rancher), I think I'll swing back and slip him that bobby pin and stealth boy. I kinda want Maria and the suit, though I think it'll be more worthwhile to let him loose just to see what he does next.

It's rather funny that, even being a rat bastard, his dialogue while imprisoned in Caesar's tent made me end up liking him. He turns out to be an all right guy if you let him live, and is grateful for the chance to machete fight to the death if you choose that option, even commenting that you, too, are an all right cat for doing so. Yeah, he tries to kill you. So what? You, the Courier, slaughter countless hundreds of people on a daily basis, often with a lot less motivation than Benny has for his plans for the Platinum Chip. You were just some random courier who knew too much. To him, you were just an NPC called "Courier." No more important than the average NCR Trooper, Legionnaire, or Prospector is to the Courier.
