Is Notch trolling Bethesda again?

Post » Sat Oct 08, 2011 12:52 am

It's not STRICTLY Skyrim. But does anybody else feel that Notch is making fun of Bethesda a bit by adding dragons into Minecraft? How might this effect his legal case for Scrolls?

Bethesda doesn't own the rights to dragons.

Soooo.....

Edit: Notch claims he has the up most respect for Bethesda and loves their games. I hardly think he's trying to make fun of them through dragons, considering theyre related to the adventure mode he created for MineCraft. And the adventure patch was planned before any of this legal nonsense.

Notch will get what's coming to him shortly. He's in way over his head. Zenimax are going to teach him a lesson he won't soon forget.

Wouldn't affect them at all. Notch has creative freedom for Minecraft.
Beth would have to prove that Notch was doing it as some kind of ... I don't even know what this would be considered.

Doesn't matter.

Not trolling. Dragons are hardly unique to The Elder Scrolls. But I personally feel it's a nod towards a very stupid court-case.

For what? Having a game called Scrolls? Your fan-boyism is just ignorant. I hope the courts rules in Notch's favour.

Well, going into court because of the word "scrolls" is pretty rettarded IMO. No one even calls the individual games as "TES 3", "TES 4", but Morrowind and Oblivion. Skyrim is more known as 'Skyrim' than "TES V".

I don't think he's trying to MAKE a court case or anything. I just feel as if he's poking a bit of fun at Bethesda. After all, he was completely against dragons in Minecraft a few months ago.

Did Notch kick your puppy, or something?

I mean, yeah - maybe he made a dumb move or two, due to being an un-knowledgable indie developer (the Quake challenge, for instance), but I'm really not understanding where actual nasty feeling against him come from. So confused.

(edit: or is it just the too-broad trademark application?)

If you read up on it first you'd see that if Zenimax didn't sue now it would jeopardize them being able to protect their copyright in the future. They have to do this.

Ummm... Dragons are not idea that originated from Bethesda, it is part of myths and legends that are hundreds of years old. Granted, if they copied looks, characteristics and perception of dragons that would be something. Now, since they did not (as far as I know), Bethesda has no reason to sue them or anything. It would be pointless and not to mention very funny.

Also I am not sure if this belongs on this boards..

They were planning to add dragons long before this legal dispute cropped up.

No, Notch likes Elder Scrolls and Bethesda, he said so in an interview and on his twitter, and Beth doesn't own Dragons.

Can you explain? I don't see how, but I'm not a law major or anything. It still seems quite silly to me, and as a Minecraft player and someone who is looking forward to scrolls I am pretty disappointed at Bethesda/Zenimax.

How? I don't see how calling a game Scrolls jeopardizes their copyright on Elder Scrolls.

What's your problem with Notch? Do you even know the details of these case? He's being sued over the title of his game because it's called "Scrolls". When Zenimax started this lawsuit Notch offered to change the title completely to avoid this. Not to mention hes publicly stated respect for Bethesda. And what's this "teach him a lesson"? You think he's trying to do something malicious?

Learn the facts mate. Weather you agree with Notch or Bethesda is one thing but actual facts are different.

Notch pretty much started the legal nonsense when he attempted to trademark the word scrolls which in theory would put him in the position to hold Bethesda by the balls on future Elder Scrolls games.

Since when? Back in June of 2010, he was seriously considering it, but was worried about pathfinding issues with large entities.

Oh wait yeah, the copyright Mojang want's on Scrolls is pretty insane...

"Entertainment services in the form of electronic, computer and video games provided by means of the Internet and other remote communications device; internet games (non downloadable); organising of games; games (not downloadable) played via a global computer network; education and entertainment services in the form of cinematographic, televisual, digital and motion picture films, radio and television programs and shows; preparation, editing and production of cinematographic, televisual, digital and motion picture films, radio and television programs; entertainment services in the form of electronic, computer and video games provided by means of the Internet, mobile telephone and other remote communications device."

Then Zenimax might as well get to work on getting developers who have the words; The. Elder. and Scrolls in the titles and the game itself. But why stop there? They should go for games using Roman numerals also. Yeah, a big company suing a indie developer over the name Scrolls isn't going to jeopardize how the gaming industry views Bethesda.

Too closely related to the ongoing dispute between Bethesda and Notch, something that is not up for discussion on these forums.
