A note to Bethesda

And never thought a forum would be one thing that would . :foodndrink: :icecream:  :tops:
so true, goes for me as well guys :)

I am proud to be a citizen of such a great Nation among others.
We need an anthem..
"Oh say can you see... the new_est TES Vee..." something, something something etc.. etc.

I am normally a grumpy old bear, especially when my name is spelt wrongly. :stare:
Yeah, especially don't spell it y-o-g-i, unless you wanna become the boo-boo of the story..
:bolt: <-- that was me, leaving the building.. fast.

Johnny Tillotson sang that way back in 1962. :D
Woah man... neither of my parents were born back then... that's beyond all comprehension that someone can remember that far back I mean that's 44 B.L. 44 years before our lord and savior was born (Lucario)
Just to go waaay off topic here for a few lines.. I thought it was BC -before cable, and AD -after digital.. or am I once again fabulously out of the loop?
Lemme guess, didn't get around to sending me the memo again, riiight...

@OP
Welcome to what I dubbed real quickly "Outside the Asylum", with the rest of the internet more or less being "The Asylum." (there are other bright spots out there mind you, it's just that they're kinda few and far between)

Only one mod on staff intimidates me, but at the same time I happen to enjoy reading their almost-always heavily informative posts.

I have seen much worse.

Seriously. The mods there get pissed and ban you for spamming when you say "Thank you" to people that has helped you.

I find this to be one of the faster forums I browse actually, but that said its not really worth trolling here, most people are mellow enough not to give them the response they want.

Same here, my browsing here is always speedy, unless my ISP is acting up.. And yes, most people here have long since learned to ignore an obvious troll, or else at least hit the report button before posting InB4Lock. :stare:

I remember when I found that out by accident back when we had the map thread.

That's when it's most funny. I remember someone getting really po'd, accusing the moderators of editing his posts. When I first joined, I got the Toodles, the teapot is boiling censor, and was completely baffled.
Also: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is the greatest game in the history of the universe. <--- heh, yep, that one is still in there. That one is guaranteed to annoy a poster who wanted to say the opposite.

Does anyone else see what the OP did with his/her name?

Yes. We're a reasonably sharp bunch around here. :poke:

Because most topics which bring about conflict are banned from discussion. :)

deacon, I can take you to a forum with mods that pick on members and use all sorts of language, in addition to banning you for the most outrageous reasons. Honestly, I can come here and not feel like I have a bulleyes on me in every topic. I am actually COMPELLED to follow the rules because of their mellowness.

Because most topics which bring about conflict are banned from discussion.

THIS. This right here. And we've tried to have certain ones occasionally, and always, it never survives 2-3 pages.

I agree with everything this thread says. I used to surf a few different forums (WoW, Gaia, /b/) and all of them are full with children who act like children. This forum is very much different. I'm not sure what it is, I'm not sure why it's this way, it's just better. I love it.

I'd like to thank not only the moderators, but the community as well. You guys are all amazing.

Yep this forum is a nice place to be. The rules are pretty strict, and a new member might think these are the strictest rules eva, but honestly I feel that in some aspects they aren't strict enough. There are certain topic types here which aren't banned yet that bring out the worst in some of our members, to the point where the topic is absolutely nothing like the rest of the forum, in a bad way. There are also ways that trolls can act like trolls but not actually break a rule, so they never get warned. And there are ways that people can spam but not actually get warned, such as what happened a few days ago when the poor mods had to make two TES V Speculation threads a day because of all the spam.

Everybody has one or two mods they don't really get along with, as do I, but in general our mods our great. I've often had discussions with other members of this forum where they complain about Mod A and Mod B, and am completely shocked they have a problem with them. Then when I complain about Mod C, then they're shocked at how I have a problem with them. I think the fact that not everyone has a problem with a single mod shows how good our mods are at what they do.

Overzealous moderators are a disease this forum suffers from in my opinion.

If you think the mods we have here are overzealous then... well, I don't think you've been to many other forums, and almost definitely not forums made by individuals and not game companies. Because if you had you would know the pure enjoyment one gets when they're banned by a mod or admin for asking a question the wrong way,

That comes down to the fact that the moderators are not robots plugged into their computers. Whilst we all strive to be consistent in our moderation we are all individuals and will see things and deal with problems in a slightly different way. If someone gets into trouble they can always discuss it constructively with that moderator - we do mess up occasionally - or if they are still unhappy, take it to admin. We are quite happy to discuss problems.

Right - must go plug myself back into the usb port and set the mode to 'grumpy'.

Lie all you want RohughBotV3.85.40, soon the Admins will uncover that your version was mistakenly not permanently set to grumpy and replace you with the newest, most grumpy version yet!

That's generally because any disagreement, argument or dissenting opinion is characterised as flaming, and the thread gets locked. The community's nice because of the people and because the mods maintain order, but that order does come at a price.

That was me. For about six months. Thing is, I really was characterising something as being similar to what would happen in the Russian SFSR.

That's as sweeping a statement as saying other forums' pay no attention at all and allow constant flaming and abuse. We ask people to maintain a reasonable standard civility, and we had to exclude discussion on certain topics where it has been proven time and time again that people just cannot discuss them without it triggering raaaage for someone. Resulting in warns, bans and tears all around. But I think more often than not, many of us tend to caution in a thread or do a clean up in an effort to allow a topic to continue, when we can see most people making an effort to air their differences of opinion without resorting to calling someone a "retard" or saying that they obviously did not get beyond a 4th grade education or whatever. That's a judgment call though - if I glance over a contentious 3 page thread and see that I would have to clean out 2 of the three pages, I figure that's not worth my time, the thread of the discussion was lost before I got there.

None of the other forums I've been on characterise mere disagreement as abuse.

Mere disagreement is one thing and is acceptable, by the time a topic is closed there probably been moderator involvement already with deletions and edits, it gets to the stage where it is not worth allowing that topic to continue. Plus, as a member, you often do not get to see what has gone before and do not have the ability to see the posts already in the trash forum or are privy to the discussions that has gone on between the moderators.

Believe it or not - and it seems you take the "not" approach - we would rather a thread stays open and discussion continues. It is to everyone's advantage to have as much discussion on gamesas games as possible as long as those topics stay constructive and orderly. Sometimes it just isn't possible.

Nah, I'll vouch for some great debates that I've had with folks about environmentalism. Opposing sides that listened to each other. Yes, hotbutton topics have been banned, and that does keep the peace. However, it's not the moderators' faults for closing them, banning the topics, or being too strict. The members who were participating caused the locks and topic banning; they just couldn't check the emotions.

Dissent, argument etc are definitly allowed, it's just that folks need to be civil when doing so.

erm, have I just dissented? Warn me!!!!! :gun:

A result of strict moderation. A little too strict if you ask me but it's difficult to complain about the results. As a result Trolls don't last very long around here.

I see these here forums very much like TES, a room full of trolls, with flames flying everywhere, but there stand the moderators saving the folk of cyrodiil with their daedric banhammers and stopping flamers and trolls alike with undefeatable skills. I dont know how many mods there are but they are like the nine divines of the forums.

Darn i left spam out of the anology :sadvaultboy:

But these forums are awesome :foodndrink:

Just because there are worse options out there doesn't make the way the mods act in some cases better. And why would I compare this forum to ones owned by an individual, I'm comparing this forum to other forums owned and operated by a company with a team of selected moderators, why would I compare two completely different things? At the point when threads are locked because they could possibly venture into an area where someone might start talking about a banned topic you can classify the mods as being too "enthusiastic".

I stand behind my statement.
