A note on names in games

Post » Wed Feb 02, 2011 2:50 pm

In Elder Scrolls we have Lord Dagon and in CoC we have The Esoteric Order of Dagon. If they both belong to Beth it′s understandable. But still, why does it appear twice?
Same with Draconis and The Draconian Madstone in Oblivion. Rumour has it that Draconia is a star system far away with a planet orbiting a star much like Earth. This planet is supposedly inhabited by the reptilian race, once the creators of the human race and also responsible for our whole evolution and society which they have controlled all along.

Are we playing these games and others, are we getting so many movies just to get aware of these beings and the truth subconsciously? Yes money and power play big parts too, but the question remains. Is there more to all this?

On note, when raising the fur shield in Oblivion. Take a closer look at it and you will see hostile snake/reptilian faces with sharp teeth. Same as on some walls in the Imperial City. Same as in Morrowind in the temple walls.

Hahaha are you serious? REALLY? I've got a really crap shirt with a dragon and a snake on it on the back, what this really means is that I'm being controlled by this other worldly race.

No, really, something like this shouldn't even be up for discussion.

This is why I can write this. No-one is supposed to understand or debate it seriously. Instead we talk about war in Iraq and other stuff, to keep us busy.

War and catastrophes happen to keep us distracted. They are planned with hidden purposes

Dagon has been part of the Cthulhu mythos long before the DCotE game was made (which Bethesda only published, not developed). As in, before most of us were born. Mehrunes Dagon has been with TES since Arena/Daggerfall. So unless Bethesda for some reason decided to name one of their gods after a Lovecraftian creature without any similarities back then in 1994, the names have no relation whatsoever.

I think it's just a coincidence. The dev. teams are probably different. In alot of places we see repeating names or faction names, they're not necessarily related.

Dagon = Dragon less the 'r', if you think of it that way, that's probably why it's a common fantasy name. I know I think Lovecraft was first to use it, but I know when I think of fantasy names, I'll use something mundane, drop/add a letter or two, and people never notice.

As for the whole "reptilian race ruling the world" thing, take off your tin-foil hat and live life. Conspiracy theories make me laugh*

The Dagon referenced in the Esoteric Order of Dagon in Call of Cthulhu is a figure in the Cthulhu Mythos, which is based on the cosmic horror stories written by HP Lovecraft and the lore added on to this by later writers, HP Lovecraft wrote a story called Dagon and the name also seems to show up in some of his other stories. Call of Cthulhu probably just uses the name because its based on it. I'm not sure why Bethesda decided to call one of the Daedra in their setting Mehrunes Dagon, I doubt it's a reference to HP Lovecraft, as if they were going to reference his works with any Daedric Prince, Hermeus Mora or however it's spelled would seem to be the one to do this. But whether it's a coincidence or not, I strongly doubt there's any conspiracy there, but then again. I suppose when you're convinced there is a conspiracy, it isn't hard to find something that you can claim supports your thoery.

They did it with Hackdirt, it′s a reference to Innsmouth :)

Indeed, they even referenced him with the quest "Through A Nightmare, Darkly" (which in turn is a bible reference). And they also referenced "The Dunwich Horror" in Fallout 3 with the location called "Dunwich Building".

As mentioned the 'Dagon' of CoC came from the Lovecraft mythos, and it is possible that Lovecraft himself copied it from Hebrew 'Dagon', which is a fish/ing god.

Came to think of The Deep Ones, even their bible is in Hackdirt. Anyway, seems like the devs are pretty deep too

More than likely. The reference to this deity goes back to Sumeria.

Hebrew 'Dagon', which is a fish/ing god.

Yeah, what he said.

Dagon is mentioned in the Bible as the god of the Philistines.

Lots of this stuff is classical mythology with the fancy names tacked onto other things. Maybe you could read some of that before telling us to open our eyes. It's rubbish like this Draconia stuff that is designed to trick us away from investigating the very real threat posed by the Nossos of Sirius. To say nothing of the Blue-Grey gambit, the Pleiadean Triad, or the Cetian subversions.

I'm not into the fantasy/mythology genre as such, but considering the amount of references to old school science fiction in Fallout 3 it wouldn't seem amiss to me if they put it in as a little nod to those in the know. Don't think it would really "mean" anything significant in the long run though.

So instead of worrying about a conflict of dubious legitimacy in which people die every day, we should be concerned with the mind-controlling lizard men from space?

And I'm the one who's being distracted from what's important here?
