When lapping a CPU make sure you aren't lapping your fingers as well. I just destroyed my ring finger while doing it and now it's annoying to type.

Didn't the feeling of sanding your finger set off any alarms?

Worst I've ever done was unknowingly polish my pinky finger's nail with some 2000 grit. Both my CPU and that one nail looked fabulous though.

Oh, sanding down your CPU? Might as well just use some snake oil as thermal paste, man.

You were lapping the CPU heatspreader?... why? The only thing you could possibly need to tweak is the CPU HSF (heatsink part)... even then most high quality ones don't need to be lapped. A mirror finish isn't required, you just need it to be flush.

The edges of my heatspreader were quite high. It took me a while to finally get down to the copper completely. I didn't go for a mirror finish and it took of a degree or 2 so i'm not complaining.

I could feel that every once in a while my finger was hitting the sandpaper but all of a sudden I felt something in my finger and it was bleeding, nothing more than a pinprick but I sanded just enough to barely get past the layer of dead skin to the alive nervey stuff and now it's the most annoying feeling ever.

Lapping, huh? Learn a new word every day...

Thanks for the tip, I was just about to stick my elbow into a meat grinder - luckily I read this thread, and now will think twice before I do it. :P

Having no clue what you were on about, I googled "CPU lapping", and the first result was http://hubpages.com/hub/How-to-destroy-your-CPU-by-lapping-it

Haha it reminds of this article I once read.
If you are ever tempted to lap your CPU do this instead: stand on polyester carpeting with your socks while you press your CPU onto the 3500 rpm spinning gray 60 grit wheel of a nice Black & Decker BT3500 bench grinder. Keep going until the static tingle in your fingers turns into sharp shocks and the IHS is ground down to where the actual circuitry is visible. Now your CPU will work perfectly. If you'll believe that, you'll also believe that Microsoft Bob was the best Operating System in history, Enron stock was a profitable investment, and Hancock was a great superhero movie

Note:I have never tried lapping, so I can neither confirm nor deny if it works or not.

-Edit....wow that was a very odd ninja. Thats the same article I read a while back. (of course it is one of the top results)

I once heard from someone that a hologram on a fan actually made his cpu run cooler or maybe it was a blue led

Fun article, I remember reading that before.

Have lapped my current CPU in hopes of evening out the core temperature differences (two running about 5c off from the other two) since the surface wasn't quite flat and wasn't making good contact with the heatsink. Didn't get rid of the difference, but did lose about 4c off all four cores.

Didn't sand my finger, though. :)
